We all have them! And no one is above anyone else. Life is gonna go on. And dont forget life is too short and fragile so enjoy every moment! Im your brother and I love you all!

@@nicolea1441 man my last public speech was so cringe, know you're not alone. I hate how schools force everyone to take public speaking, treating it like it's a requirement to survive. No, some people are natural followers, some natural leaders, and that's ok. I'm now on a public committee and in the real world, you can be in a leadership position like this without being a great public speaker. Schools should teach that instead of stomping all over people who don't do well on a stage.

I just experienced an embarrassing moment at work today! I laughed it off but inside I was feeling so much shame. It helped me just now to ask myself: "did my (embarrassing) actions hurt anyone involved?" The answer was no, in fact I made everyone around me laugh. Probably out of discomfort, but still, I was the only one who felt hurt from it. And that helped a lot to realize nobody else was harmed! In my mind, I imagine everyone is so uncomfortable they feel hurt by MY embarrassing situation, but this is just not the case. If anything they felt better about themselves after seeing me do something embarrassing haha! And I'm okay with that :)

Honestly most people don’t care enough beyond the moment to recall anything about an embarrassing situation UNLESS it was really heated or caused something out of the ordinary to occur. It’s easy to get wrapped bc up in one’s own feelings and thoughts. Write down what is bothersome to you about your obsession with it, maybe your fears and anger about the moment and then tear it up, burn it, bury it or whatever it takes and let it go. You have much more important things to worry about in life than some random cringe ego-bruising moment that is over and done. And if people do bring it up later, just say something like “I don’t recall that, but yes it is kinda cringe, but we all have cringe moments and we all move forward anyway, right?” Then change the subject or remove yourself. If they continue to poke fun at you about it, I would ask them why they are so obsessed about that moment, why they can’t move on from it. It shifts the cringe moment to them, hopefully that’s enough to stop it.
@HowCommunicationWorks Жыл бұрын
I think you’re really right about this. Often we obsess about these momentary humiliation’s for a long time, but the people who witnessed the humiliation forget about it pretty quickly. We have to learn to forget about it just as quickly. But our ego is so injured that we hang onto it.

Just from personal experience, I think owning up to your mistakes can help. If people can tell you're lying or trying to play something you did off, you'll lose some of their trust. You have to realize that we’re all fools. It’s a miracle when we don’t make fools of ourselves. We shouldn’t think of embarrassment as the exception to the rule. Instead we should be surprised and thrilled by any interaction where we don’t make fools of ourselves. When we achieve the appearance of normalcy, that should be celebrated. But it is an achievement. It’s not the default state. The default state is to come across more or less like an idiot. The more we get this into her head, the less we’ll be troubled by embarrassment.

The embarrassments you mention are all minor. Where is a video for dealing with HUGE embarrassments? Like for adult film stars who regret their past? Or reformed criminals who are guilty of the worst crimes?
@HowCommunicationWorks3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t made a video for those sorts of issues. And I wouldn’t call those embarrassments. More like scandals or shame or deep humiliation.
@widehotep92573 жыл бұрын
@@HowCommunicationWorks The personal reactions to shame and embarrassment are subjective. For example, many students have committed suicide over the shame of a bad grade, while most would never consider this. Therefore, what you dismiss as a minor "embarrassment" could feel like a major, life-ending scandal in the mind of a more sensitive person. I wish you would explore the larger issues of embarrassment and shame. I feel you only scratched the surface of a massive emotional iceberg. Ultimately, these emotions exist only in our minds. But they are so powerful that they can lead to depression and suicide. Many people suffer internally from these feelings, but pretend not to. The reactions and effects of shame and embarrassment are highly variable between individuals. For example, one person might feel great shame for being seen naked, while another person enjoys nude beaches and feels absolutely no shame for being without clothes. The only "solution" seems to be gaining the ability to control our thoughts and emotional reactions. However, this is much harder than it appears. Feelings of shame, embarrassment, and guilt are driving motivations of many drug addicts, who take heroin or drink excessive alcohol to numb their internal pain. And many "legalized" drug addicts take powerful prescription medicines to mask the pain of these exhausting internal demons. You make good videos. I hope you take on the challenge of exploring this issue in order to help people live better lives.

I don't know if this will help anybody but I'm going to go ahead & share my recent embarrassing moment: I was on a large grass turf that was situated in-between a walking path & a neighborhood. It was around 8:30pm & I was sitting with my gf on a picnic blanket & because I thought nobody was around or near us, I made the poor decision of wrapping my leg around her. A few minutes latter, a car drives slowly down the neighborhood street next to the field & it comes to a stop. The woman driving the car rolls down her window & begins to yell at us from across the field. Basically she was saying that what were doing is crazy & out of line because there are children & families in that neighborhood. We of course immediately respond by sitting upright & apart from one another cause we both feel bad & embarrassed about the situation. Instead of driving away though, she screams at us to get up, leave & 'finish our business elsewhere'. I Immediately apologized & got up with my gf & left asap. It was even more embarrassing considering the fact we are both Christians & we have never had yk for obvious reasons. We obviously weren't planning to afterwards either, so her assumption about that just really hurt & embarrassed me. I just feel awful though cause it felt like a personal attack on our faith in regards to us looking like an inappropriate couple. On top of that she was 100% right & I've committed to making a serious change to both our public & private boundaries, even if we are "alone". It's also just 100% my fault & its been really hard not to think about it. Did I mention that her son (that looked about my age) was in the car with her? Also there was a group of kids apparently present the entire time which adds on to the personally responsible hurt & embarrassment. In summary, I pray that nobody, not even my biggest enemies, have an embarrassing moment as bad as mine

This is not something to be embarassed at all. I am 25 and I know people who is 23 and feel too old to be single, also people who is in their 40s and are happy to be single. You choose it! I also know a lot of people who got married in their late thirties and had kids in their early 40s like my own parents and who have been very happy. Its not the when its the how! I guess you are.from America bcs people there are very strict about the rules of what you should do at every age. I just wanna let you know its not like that everywhere in the world. The waitress asks bcs she is borred and needs to think about somebody elses life, or bcs she finds you atractive, or bcs she needs to fill up her mind with something else than her job. Thats it! I would say you can sometimes also politely not answer it! Believe me you will be happier if you break the rules and just focus on loving yourself and finding real love just bcs you feel like and not bcs "its time". My embarassament is the actual terrible thing 😂🙈 can't tell the story but it has to do with my period 😬 and it is so embarassing. Its quite absurd actually its a natural biological thing, but for some reason it ws a huge embarassament for me and now I cant sleep thinking about it. Anyway... Great video, in my case, I had a crush on a guy from the bus, I was too much nervous to talk to him so I decide to write a note with my number and give to him. So, I did write the note, gave to him withou saying a word (yeah, I know, it looks like a creep) then I got off the bus (I strategically choosed to give him when I was close to my stop to avoid his reaction). I spent the rest of the day anxious waiting for him to text me and he didn't sent, this happened about 6 days ago , we didn't meet again cause in the next day I didn't went to work, day after I left work late, no work at weekend and yesterday I lost one of the buses. Anyway, I'm so embarassed but I decided that, if I see him again I will pretend that nothing happened and If he comes asking for an explanation I will apologize to him.

im 13 and my little brothers friend (which I absoulutely hate) spent the night twice in a row. I was telling my older cousin about it and my grandfather was there as well, and sarcastically went "best 2 nights of my life". I immediately realized what I said sounded horribly wrong and both started laughing. I tried to laugh it off as well, but it just cringed me so hard bc im 13 and that girl is like 6. thanks for this! im feeling better just letting it out.

Im deeply humiliated when I think back 3 summers ago I was at a basketball game. It was a nice hot summer and it took place outside, so I sat on the bleachers (it was packed)...I felt extra beautiful that day because earlier I got hair done at the salon. As I sat there with my head held high, feeling on top of the world...I hear a deep voice screaming "YO WATCH OUT!!" and the basketball whipped me SQUARE in the face. I had to smile and say "oh thats alright" and I passed the players the ball like everything was okay. I tried to hold my tears back that wanted to fall from being hit with a dirty basketball in the nose....yes....people were still staring at me in shock. I sat there with my head still high. (I couldn't lose face). I felt my lip swelling..I know people saw it swelling. I sat there with my head held high until the game was over and everyone left the park. Then cried when I got home.

Today my colleague asked me to go get some supplies from a cabinet which was in a different room than our section. Cabinet didn’t have any sticker that would suggest we can’t take supplies from there and while we were checking pens and notebooks a lady came and said: “excuse me! Can I help you!!!” In a tone that made us feel like we are thief! I felt badly embarrassed and I don’t think I’d ever can go to that section of office ever again!

This happened to me just yesterday! I was presenting a training module to a group of organizational leaders who are educated, articulate, and possess a broad vocabulary.. I was taliking about an exchange between two people where the conversation resulted in one person being offended. I couldn't think of the correct term so I kept.referring to them as "the offended" and "the one who offended" rather than the "offended" and the "offender". Plus the wrong slide was shown, I lost my train of thought and completely forgot what I was to do/say next. I felt embarrassed, unprepared, and uneducated in the moment My cedibilty certainly took a hit and I felt foolish! I didn't hear it mentioned in the video, but is asking the audience a strategy?. I guess I could've said that the term escaped me and asked for help. Do you think that's a good strategy?
@HowCommunicationWorks3 жыл бұрын
I think that would have been fine under the circumstances.
@Morale_Booster3 жыл бұрын
I think that's a great strategy! I always prefer people to just be honest about their mistakes/challenges than to play it off or gaslight everyone else. It's endearing to show your humanity and say "oops, that wasn't perfect!"

Most of these strategies are so obviously disingenuous that one should be doubly embarrassed for using them. We all do embarrassing things from time to time. The best strategy is to not let your ego get the better of you, show some humility, apologize when appropriate, then move on.
@HowCommunicationWorks2 жыл бұрын
And yet, disingenuous or not, this is what people do.

Agreed! This video is terrible advice. This video should be titled "how to spot when someone is embarrassed because they tell these lies."
@HowCommunicationWorks Жыл бұрын
@@bonne_vie Sometimes we don’t like it when the patterns in our own behavior are mirrored back to us. But it’s a perfectly natural impulse to try to minimize embarrassment or loss of face. We all do it. In fact, we help each other do it. This is called cooperation in face work.

For me I have a high tolerance with embarrassment so I don’t find everything that embarrassing. A lot of the time, I think that i won’t see the people I embarrass myself in front of again. Some of my friends disagree, so what do you guys think is right?

I overthink everything in a nanosecond that eventually leads me to many problems. Today, I faced such a situation while asking for a job vacancy in a company. He asked me a basic, simple question, but I ended up overthinking it and answered something hogwash. It made me feel so embarrassed that after talking to him I was lamenting the same thing while he was still on the call. Later did I realize, that he was still on the call. I forgot to cut the call out of anxiety.

Great video, this is brilliant and a slight change from communication skills (but also still very much related)

Thank you. And thanks for always taking the time to leave a comment. I so appreciate it. I think this is still in the realm of communication skill, because I define communication skill very broadly as including all aspects of self-presentation and identity management. I guess I think I’m teaching intersectional skills as much as communication skills.

I cringe when i think of it and i dont want to because ik to some extent my emotions were valid but whatif i over reacted and made a bigger deal about it than it already is

Sounds like justifying the embarrassment but how do you deal when it's the first time they hear you and you mumble or jump to a road where the words don't make any sense because the speech wasn't prepared in advance and the words are being made up as they come

I had my 2nd event (horse back riding) today. And I had signed up for 2 turns in each event I was doing. But it turns out we were all only meant one turn. And by the time I finished, I was exhausted and ready to go home. But they called me to go again, forgetting they weren’t supposed to, and when I said I didn’t want to. My mother thought I was too scared and scolded me in front of my trainer and such. Was I wrong here? But, these tips helped a bit

so hypothetically, if you where to accidentally like an old post from a person that you know, on a social media, and don't want to be looked at like a "stalker" because you are pretty sure that they'll confront you next time they meet you. which one of these methods should you use? Or is there another way to deal with such stuff? Asking for a friend.

this is kinda similar to what happened to me. i was at my first ever flag football practice and we had to run and do drills and stuff and by the end i was feeling nauseous and i really thought i could keep it down at least till i got in my car. and literally like 5 minutes before we were released i threw up on the football field, lucky i wasn’t that close to other people but it was still really embarrassing, and i have to go back for another practice tomorrow so i’m not looking forward to that. i’m just worried people are gonna remember my throwing up…
