Planting Corn - John Deere 7600

I love it! I rode in an 8235 with a 12 row JD planter yesterday. Not only were we planting the corn but we were putting down fertilizer and spraying behind the rows for pig weeds, etc. It is an incredible operation that looks foreboding with it's two huge yellow saddle tanks. Had to stop mid row one time to tighten the set screw on a gauge wheel but other than that it was so smooth especially to watch the tractor guide itself. The land had been subsoiled and bedded but had stood long enough for some weeds to germinate so the other tractor was chiseling ahead of the plant rig. I asked about lining up over the subsoil crack after the chisel plow had gone through since the beds were gone. I was told that the GPS would put the tractor and rows over the subsoiling even though the beds were disrupted. It's funny to think that my Uncle was probably planting that same land with a one or two row planter 60 years ago. :).

I hope every one can see that the aerial shots are running faster then the planter is really going.The ground shots are the right speed.It looks like the planter is going around 5 mph.Great video!The aerial shots really stand out.Wi really is a pretty place to be in the spring.Tell your Dad he plants a pretty straight row for not having GPS.Hope the crop does well.

Have you ever thought about eSet plates for the planter? With GPS you could also cut off planter rows on the point rows. I built a 10 row vacuum planter for my 7800 in 1990. If your contours were too much for a 12 row. GPS eliminates the guess row problems. With $260 per bag of seed, it would pay to have GPS control.

I was going to ask what that arm is off the side of the planter but I see that it gives you a line in the dirt to use as your centre line to drive the tractor down each row.

Keith Brettell That little disc on the arm is called a 'row marker.' Ryan is a good farmer and I'm sure he is thinking about purchasing a GPS guidance system for the tractor to use when straight evenly spaced rows are a must. It's incredible to watch the tractor drive itself across the field. Watched it yesterday! The guidance system also frees up the operator to keep his eyes on the numerous activities that are occurring behind the tractor.

By doing all that strip farming how many acres can you plant in a day? By the way, you guys do a really professional job of field work. Couldn't help but wonder if you re using GPS for planting.

Novelty John No, they spray it with 28% right after we plant it as a burndown.

Is it common in your area to plant behind a disc? Also, I actually cringed a little to see you run your markers thru the planted rows!

Joel Schroeder We usually disc chiseled ground ahead of the planter. The arms don't dig deep enough to reach the seed.

+russell rogall You usually grow up on a farm. It's not a business that a city guy can just go out and buy a farm and then make a living, very complicated. Actually, today you need to be a first rate mechanic, technician, welder, metal fabricator, heavy machinery operator, crop scientist, chemical engineer, oh, and a pretty knowledgeable farmer. Even more if you raise livestock.
