A Subaru I once had also had this feature but where Toyota gets a bit smart about it is they also apparently have the heating element running up the driver side of the window along the A-pillar so you won't get that ice dam during snow storms that usually gums up the wipers.

I live in pa and have owned my 4Runner since November of 2015 and I just happen to notice this button today , it never even crossed my mind before what it even did and I’ve used my rear plug so many times too .

My 2015 honda crv touring has that button, but no light, does this mean it does not work?How do I know if it is on?

but the wipers need to be actively on to engage? so how do they deice if they are not resting on the heating element for an extended period of time?

Great question. They only de-ice if the wiper is sitting on the heated part of the glass.

I bought an 2020 LE base rav4 LE in Des Moines, Iowa. It doesn't come with the wire windshield heater. My wife's a nurse so today I needed car to take it to work. We use a remote starter because we are three stories up for the car outdoors. The night before I turned on the windshield deicer on high do it'd ready to going on the morning because we had an ice storm on Easter. I used the remote start but the ice wasnt melted enough after 24 minutes. Then I found the fan defaults to windshield and cabin air. It does this each time I tried to start it w/o the the remote. It did the same thing went to the default setting. This sucks. My dealer tried to start a rav4 2020 after setting the windshield fan to high but when started again it defaulted to the wimpy setting.of half windshield to half cabin fan. The service department said this is just the way it is on all rav4s without buying the windshield heater wire $3,000 upgrade packeage, this is what I could afford. It's pretty dum engineering design too so the wipers are lower than the inside window deicer fan. And the windshield full fan it seems can't be reprogramed to default, to be the primary fan... I'm really frustrated with this SUV.

It heats a small part of the windshield that the wiper lays on.

Where is the membrane located exactly? IS it inside of the glass (like made into the glass like rear defroster) or on the interior of window (cabin)? I just had my windshield ceramic coated...hope it didn't damage this membrane.

That is the thing that interested me too. I guese it is inside of just wiper not entire front shield.

How come this feature is only on the Corolla's in Canada and not the United States. Toyota also offers heated steering wheel in Canda, but not in the United States

2017 Toyota Tacoma doesn't have this feature and it needs it badly. Very poor design having the wipers sit so low beyond the reach of the defrost vents, so no matter how long the truck runs they are still stuck in ice.
