As someone who's surfed for over 20yrs and has all of this down, I have to add one important tip. Once you can catch waves, STAY NEAR THE TOP, particularly when surfing smaller waves! The higher you are on an unbroken wave, the more speed you'll be able to generate.
@CaptainSchlockler6 жыл бұрын
It's amazing how much looking down the line affects whether you catch or don't catch a wave. I always used to look straight ahead while paddling at an angle and often either end up spinning straight off while popping up, or going straight ahead and completely missing the wave. As soon as I started looking down the line, everything fell into place - that natural inclination to push down on the inside rail to turn the board across the wave face came naturally, and because my head was facing in the direction the board was moving, my body ended up in the correct orientation without spinning off because my head was going in one direction and the board the other. Tips like those in this video save you a huge amount of time by pointing out things you probably wouldn't normally think of, and have a huge impact on whether you're successful or not.

I think taking off at an angle with my hands pushing my inside rail into the wave helps me as well because I surf a flatter board and it helps to fit me into the curve of the wave while still allowing me to use a flatter board that helps me paddle faster. Since the rail's curve helps to match the wave's shape not just the rocker.

I was finally able to pump and gain speed on a wave the other day after years of trying and hours of KZbin. What a feeling!! The wave I surf is a really fast reef break and I found that on a lot of my takeoffs I was just going straight to the bottom of the wave and losing all my speed. I had to angle the takeoff and stay high from the start. Keep at it! The feeling is really worth the effort! Thanks for the great videos.

Timing is key. practice catching a wave without paddling. By using the upward momentum of the wave. This will help you create more speed when you do catch it. Sit in the impact zone and take a few on the head to learn this lesson. Then you can create speed from the waves momentum

Hi Kale, another excellent video. Look to where you want to go is critical.I noticed at the 9.27 mark when your man pops up he has his back knee bent on the board with the front leg in position & then pushes up. That’s ok IMO as it’s very similar to the chicken wing pop up I use due to age and back knee issues. My point being you need to practice on land to train your muscle memory because it’s a split second motion in the ocean. Regards Phil

Terrific stuff, lads. I am a recent subscriber so you might have some videos already on this. When on a board, the surfer sees that view, not the view from the beach which tends to make it look easy and also seems to make the waves look smaller. Awesome video dudes, I struggle with nose diving my board the most and got three while tips out on the water, 1 is look to where u want to go as said in vid, 2 put more weight into the back part of the board and three is to drop in at a slight angle. Anymore tips?
@mjh50915 жыл бұрын
Find your center on your board where the nose is out of the water enough, but not too much. Too much body weight to the back of the board while paddling will make you bog down and miss waves. Find and get comfortable with your center on the board first. What I like to do, and what's described in the video, is arch your upper back (thoracic extension) as you're paddling into the wave, this will help keep your head and eyes up so you can look down the line, and also facilitate keeping your weight back and centered on the board, allowing your nose to not dig too much. Also I like to plant my hands near my ribs before popping up, which is also discussed in the vid. The further back you plant your hands, the more stability you have during your pop up and the less weight you have going forward on the board. Also, not being fast enough on the pop up will put you further down the face of the wave and more of a chance of pearling. Time your waves right and coordinate your pop up accordingly. Waves are not the same everyday, sometimes you can get away with a slow, casual pop up, but other days you might have a split second to pop up. But I've seen so many people, usually older or fatter people, just take too long to pop up and when they try to pop up they're too far down the face and they pearl their board. And yes, angle yourself in the direction you want to take off. Depending on how steep the wave is, I'll position myself at a 30-40 degree angle on steep, walled up days, and slight angles on those slower, softer days. It takes time to hone in everything you need in surfing, and it's usually the small tweaks that make the big differences in catching waves.

As a begginer im always in doubt if i should pop up with my hands on the board or grabbing the rails, when I stoped grabing the rails i realised that i pop up better. But looking to the pros videos I realise that the most of them grab it so... what is you recommendation about that. Cheers! Great channel.

Often it’s only one of their hands which grabs and the other is planted on the deck. I still think the majority of the hand should be on the deck

Grabbing the rail ensures a little control. You can also steer the board easier to help with positioning - sometimes you need a little extra boost of direction once you're gliding. I’ve also heard that fish tails are good boards for people that are starting out and have some kind of experience with being on some kind of board whether that be land or water. If anyone could point me in the right direction on what board I should get that would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Do you have any drills or something to practice pop ups in a more controlled environment? Or a certain technique that gives a more consistent pop up? I can pop up 95% of the time but my feet are all over the show 100% of the time so I never achieve a consistent feeling from which to continue the wave with. By the time I shuffle my feet around the wave has closed me out

Hi Kales, thanks for the very informative videos. Sometimes when I catch the wave and I'm still lying on the board, I find it difficult to actually pop up as I feel sort of "locked" there, in that lying position. By the time I overcome this and do pop up, it is pretty much too late to properly position myself on the wave. Any ideas how I may overcome this "hesitation" to pop up? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Practice practice practice. Could also be core weakness. An inherant sense the body might have to protect the spine by telling you not to get into that vulnerable position. So, on land core training (Swiss ball is great) and practice practice practice in the water. Also consider a BIG board to make it easy
