The way this is composed is so brilliant. The blues rock chorus emphasises the intoxicating nature of a toxic relationship. And the somber verse section is so melancholy. Love this song.

I am literaly blown away by this song. My interpretation is that he describes line by line how it is to be in love with a very damaged person ("there are questions I can't ask") and how cruel society can be sometimes towards rape victims or victims in general, speaking then about "how good it is" to be alone with that person, like two people against the world. He has so much talent to say the truth about hard topics and to tell awful things with such poetry. He's a true & amazing artist, a very sensitive one I think. The fact that his voice is so strong and lively just adds more haunting and emotional effect! He really reminds me of some jazz/blues singers like Billie Holiday in his way of saying reflective things about society in his songs.

I love how everyone is trying to overlook that he uses the words "rape culture" and try to make it out to mean something else. Nah. We know what rape culture is, we know that he doesn't mean anything like a chaotic street. Listening to this song, honestly, I think this song is about what it's like to be in love with someone with so much sexual trauma. It's about loving someone with serious trust issues, especially sexually. Trying to navigate the complicated journey of survival and recovery from sexual assault, from rape, from abuse. "Honey when you kill the lights and kiss my eyes... I feel like a person for a moment of my life." "The damaged love she makes. I don't know what else that I would do, than try to kiss the skin that crawls from you." Having the trust of someone you love, being able to live in your body as a BODY and not a trap filled with horrific memories is like a drug. Love, trust, feeling, emotions are like drugs. When you feel nothing, you crave the ability to do so more than ever. Trauma numbs. But nah, go ahead and try to make it about something else, try to ignore the fact this song is implicitly about the effect misogyny has on men and women. About rape culture and a crude culture that ignores the effects it has on victims.

@Hozier , you probably won't read this. But if the universe was kind and you did, I just want to thank you, specially for your lyrics. I live in a place where women's rights and value are underrated. Music in here talks only about women being abused, and mistreated or objectified. And I felt like being uncomfortable with it was wrong, like I was wrong for wanting to be treated like a person instead of a decorative object.Like not wanting to drunk-dance to those songs with some drunk dude was wrong. And then I heard "To be alone" where you talk about not fitting in while listening to the so called "Anthems of rape culture". And, I know it's not a big deal, for others, and it's not the main topic of that song. But It meant the world to me. And that is what being an artist is about, spreading yourself to the world in the hope of giving others something to be inspired with, in my case, you helped me. SO MUCH. I just felt like, if someone out there thinks the same thing too, I am not alone in this. And it's okay not to like being mistreated, and If I speak my mind, someone out there, will agree with me. I am not alone. And I know it's just a song, and it's just a line in a second of a song. But it really meant the world for me. I Just wanted to thank you for bringing true Ideas and messages to popular music. Cause that way, a girl like me, in a city like this, in a reality like mine, will learn, that there are other realities.

What leads you think " the world" could handle another Hozier? The world barley could handle Dylan...I was at Newport in 1965 when the "Folkies" booed him when he plugged in a Fender Stratocaster and blew them away, just when "the world" was ready to accept an electric Dylan, he had that tragic motorcycle crash, was out for a year, and came back playing alt. country on Nashville Skyline, with killer songs like "Lay, Lady, Lay...he was always two-three steps ahead of the rest of the world annd music itself. Hozier has an attractive sound now, but what's gonna be his next move? You can't stay in he same place, you have to move or they will boo you for that too....

Taryn Imwalle if you like the raw bluesy feel to Hozier you might like some of the 1960s blues. I like BB King's Live At The Regal (1965). John Lee Hooker is also really great for this minimalist solo guitar blues. I'm a big fan of his two albums Travelin' (1960) and Simply The Truth (1968).

His vocals, meshed with his guitar rifts create a feeling of a true love union in itself. There are no words to describe his style, it just soothes the souls just right. His creations transcend logic and make you feel like your experiencing true soul therapy through his storytelling

The reason why Andrew (I think that's his name, only been listening for a few days so far) sounds so good live, is because when he originally recorded the Hozier album, he did it in his parents' attic after a bad breakup, with which I'm guessing, a crappy mic. There wasn't any effects added, so boom. Either way, this dude is awesome as hell!

Best version of this song in my opinion! I especially like the guitar solo at the end. A lot of people say his music is addicting, and I completely agree. I have to listen to it at least once a day! I was wondering why because I haven't had that since the eighties, when I became addicted to Tom Waits' music. But now I know that Tom Waits is a huge influence for Hozier, I finally start to see the link! For the lack of new Hozier compositions for the time being, I guess I'll have to revive my Tom Waits addiction (no problem of course). But Hozier, please try to find some time soon to lock yourselve in the attic again. WE NEED MORE!!!
