By far the best and easiest fix for HP's criminal cartridge scam - even better after downgrading the firmware and turning automatic updates off. I'm looking forward to the class action lawsuits. Thank you!

Followed your easy directions about a year ago and today received a message to connect my printer to HP for updates. DID NOT do that because then they would say to add color cartridges. So I followed your directions again so I could only print black, even though my color cartridges were very low. Thank you for what you have done to save me and many other money. Great job

Thanks for this really helpful info, it did the trick just fine on my HP 8725 - same issue: printer stopped working after yellow cartridge was empty. Followed your guide and....voila, it works again. Shame on HP though for creating these issues !!!! Oh and also for HP: I'll never ever buy your expensive cartridges again, go for the remanufactured ones guys !!! Many thanks again.

thanks for this. I have a ton of black in left and I can now use it until it is empty and then buy replacement cartridges. Really HP should get sued for this because once you own a printer you should be able to print in black ink only if you really want to and not have to buy additional cartridges. The cartridges are 30 times more expensive than what the printer cost me originally. It's by no means environmentally friendly to have them have such a system because most people will throw out their printers and buy a new one when the ink runs out as it turns out to be way cheaper. Talk about wasteful technology.

So mine wasn't printing Black. Thought it was the cartridge- replaced it- STILL wasn't printing BLACK- cleaned it - cleaned again- aligned- nothing .. talk about frustrated.....then I came across this video- reset everything and re-figured setup--VOILA!!! thank god cause this thing almost became target practice. Sometimes- these manufacturers just need to leave well enough alone and quit with all the new bells and whistles!!!! But THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU none the less!!!

My printer ran out 2 color cartridge and 1 black cartridge so I went to Office Depot and bought 1 black cartridge and installed but it did not work due to 2 color cartridges ran out of ink too. I called STUPID HP technical support and they told me that I have to go and buy additional color cartridges in order to make my printer to printer again. They said that there is no way to reset it. Lucky, that I found your video and performed the reset and it worked fine without buying additional cartridges that told me to buy. STUPID HP COMPANY. NEVER BUY THEIR PRODUCT PRINTER ANYMORE.

I had the error too. I replaced with brand new regular ink for all colours and the ink system failure message reappears. Then I put in extra large ink cartridge for all colours and saw the ink system failure message again. Then I followed this video and the message still appear which frustrated me. On both purchases of ink, I made sure they were the genuine ones and they were costly too so what do I do now

Just an FYI: The part where we uncheck sending info to HP, I unchecked as directed by Johnny on video, however, I noticed it is checking itself back on as I had the same issue and repeated the steps and that was checked. I do not believe I missed unchecking it. If you have issue repeat the steps, it worked for me.

I have tried this, it does work for some time, after a number of prints it will not let me print, I rest it and use it again and again and again, now this crooked printer tells me " this printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems. And ...... To make the long story short I can not rest my printer anymore.

Unfortunately I tried this on my hp 3833 printer and now I cannot even get access to the touch screen as the message “Cartridge cannot be used until enrolled in HP Instant Ink” will not come off the screen. Before attempting this fix, i had access to the screen and stuff. Now nothing. I tried this reset fix again but nothing is getting that message off. So frustrating. Not even seeing that OOBE reset option anymore

I tried this the way it said to in this video, and couldn't get it to go, kept saying things like was deleted of ink, the cartridge was using ink tanks, which was not true. well could get anything going. but i was thinking, how could i try and get it to go. had to figure it out. RIGHT guys, had to be a way, since i now knew how to get it to format, and start with everything it had in the INTERNAL HDD, or what it was. So what i did was this, fill as much as i could the CARTS that were setup carts. then after doing that, it kept saying they were deleted of ink, them I had some extras that I ordered from EBAY, and i kept loading them up with ink, and switching them back and forth in the 8710 HP. well well, got it going. JUST sometimes you just need to try everything you can think of to get this going, and even though we now know that trick in this video, there are more things that no matter what we do, some info is still there inside in a chip of some sort that keeps some of the data, which ones, and or what data I do not know. I do know this, it does keep track of how many pages have been printed, and that is never erased, and if someone knows more, and I am wrong, and it can be erased, please share it here. I just took some pain meds, and will add or delete tomorrow when i feel better, I hope some of this makes sense, and can help others having this same problem loading ink by the DIY method, even though those bums over by CANNON, BROTHER, HP and the rest of them, they do this to make $$$$$ and they don't care it seems to me about me and you! First printer i owned and used was the matrix dot printers, the paper was all in one box, and all together, and as you finished printing, you ripped of the paper from the rest of it because they were all attached. and it was just black, no colors back then. well good luck everyone, and heck with the producers of the printers, we will load our own ink, and there is nothing that they can do about it..... HHO {maybe I'LL do a video with how I was able to get it to go, and work, depends on if anyone tell me here, this is what they want. k? and yes it will be a good video, not shaky, but on a tripod, and the lighting will be good, i am also a photographer, lol}

Good afternoon! So I was having this same issue and followed this all the way up until the end where you press later on the screen that says finish setup online. Well....this printer will not let me press later. I'm stuck and beyond frustrated. I tried turning off the printer and starting over and that's a no go, I also tried unplugging it and I'll be darned if the same dang "later" screen didn't pop right back up. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Update::: Mine doesn’t work…. I never get the service menu. I assume you are talking about the home and back buttons when you say above and below? My screen does things when I hit the home button. Ok, got mine to work. My menus were very different. I hit the back button (bottom) 4 times. I had to do a partial full reset. The other option wasn’t available.

Johnny, it is very kind of your instruction that had helped me few times. However, HP must have a way to monitor I have been using this as a solution and then they blocked me by showing message claimed that "This printer is not designed to use continuous ink system, remove continuous ink system and install original HP (or compatible) cartridges. I am speechless. I always buy the company's cartridges and if not, how could it work in the past? I still have my receipt from Staple. If you see the message, please reply and tell me what causes this. Many thanks.

This solution seemed very promising; however, the reset didn't bypass the cartridges for my printer. I think I'll have to buy the 951XL yellow. I still don't know how that depleted, given that I've only printed in black. Never again will I get an HP printer.

Hm. This works initially but once configured to the wifi the same issue happens. Looks like HP is onto us. Is there another setting which needs adjustment to prevent automatic firmware updates or whatever is causing the issue to repeat?

I'm based in England.. I tried this and ended with a frozen LCD screen that says 'cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in HP instant ink' . The thing is I am enrolled in HP Instant ink... for 100% sure. I am stuck!! Instructions were good but didn't work for me :-(
