HRtP really pulls off this atmosphere where you feel like you're going up against something so terribly powerful and ancient that you can't even comprehend it. You flash through dimensions in the span of minutes fighting Sariel, going through the planes of hell and a strange world where time seems distorted. Maybe it helps that the enemies don't interact with you at all, unlike the other games where they at least speak. You're not having a spell card battle, you're clawing your way out of a twisted world that you unwittingly fell into. I don't know if ZUN was going for anything that crazy or if he just thought it would be a cool battle, but I feel like the most comparable character in terms of being leagues above you is Yukari, and she doesn't really elicit fear the same way Sariel does. At least with Yukari, her motives, or stated motives, are clear, and she does adhere to a set of rules in your duel. With Sariel you hardly even know what's happening.

I know this is an old comment but BIG agree- HRtP had this really uncanny feeling with the lack of dialogue, the very strange boss designs (YuugenMagan and Kikuri especially), how most of the bosses just seemed to have blank/stern expressions except for Elis who looks positively manic, Reimu’s tiny size compared to them, etc. Mima also had a bloody knife which is uh, weird... especially considering her later appearances. In the case of Sariel, it’s intimidating how tall she is while having her eyes closed the entire fight, not moving at all except for her arm to use her wand. Konngara also ended up standing out like a sore thumb being the only character that appears to change expressions not to mention constantly /turning/ in your direction. Just. Yeah. Don’t get me started on the overall darker feeling of the songs (Angel’s Legend is genuinely creepy) and constantly having to fight with Reimu’s yin-yang orb, your only means of damaging the bosses also being effective against you. HRtP was unsettling.

Even then, his character designs all hold up. Sariel is one of the most notable in terms of character designs in the PC-98 era (so is Yumemi). She's almost completely unique compared to the rest of the cast, only sharing most similarities with Shinki, which makes sense.

The spellcard rules created by Hakurei Reimu were specifically designed to allow anyone a chance at defeating anyone. "- If all your named spells are defeated, you are defeated, regardless of your remaining strength." "That use of one's full abilities is to be denied. That there are no things superior to beauty and thought." The Spell Card rules were put into play after the events of Mystic Square, hence the power changing constantly after this (and hence why Cirno is able to beat Marisa)

I want to see Sariel come back. Highly unlikely since she's a creation of Makai, but things have been retconned before. I don't ask for an HRtP remake or remaster, I ask for Sariel to show up in Windows era at least once. ZUN's reasoning for not adding many PC-98 characters back after so much time is because of "where have you been" scenarios that wouldn't fit into the plot, but I imagine this one would make sense. Reimu's first final boss wasn't Remilia, Yuyuko, Eirin, not even Yuuka. _This_ was Reimu's first final boss. Reimu's first main enemy was Sariel. Reimu's first absolute adversary was Sariel. It would make sense to have a flashback fight just once against her, after all this time.

at the same time, some respect has to go toward ZUN for not bringing back the big pc98 characters just because of fan pressure. The series has gone on for so long now that it's clear the man has ran out of his top notch magnum opus ideas. It is really easy for him to strike gold again in the eyes of the community if he just made a game with any of the pc98 characters in it, never mind it be someone as well known as mima, yet he continues to create new characters, music, and lore. I like to believe there's some legitimately good reason behind them not coming back even if it's not really related to the in game lore itself. Plus, some of the pc98 characters have a much bigger presence and following than some recent windows era characters. They still have an important part in the series even though they've been gone for so long.

Sariel's first form was actually pretty easy to defeat. Her second form was harder, but not by much... I don't understand why everyone had problems using the orb in this game... it was actually quite easy to aim at. Mostly, it's probably because I have extremely good timing skills. You need to fire at it before it crosses your path - that's the key, folks.

Makai beings stay as Makai beings, and there is no proof that Cirno is from Makai (and it is extremely unlikely to be the case). Sariel's wings and Cirno's wings are completely different in shape, size and material. The only resemblance of them is that they both have 6. And come on.. "residue reforming"? That's a Resident Evil plot point, not a Touhou character's transformation. If Sariel even theoretically returned from this idea into Cirno, the problem is that their genetic makeup is completely different. Sariel's skin tone is indigo, not the usual Asian (or tan). Sariel's hair is also a similar color, whereas Cirno is seen with a turquoise-ish cyan. And let's remember, Cirno's a fairy. Sariel's a Makai archangel. These two are not interchangeable in species, especially the origins involving Makai. Bottom line, they're not the same character. Hell, if you really want to say Cirno was originally a Makai being, then Mai is much closer.

Actually a lot of Touhous (most prominently Youmu, Sakuya, Mima) have thrown death threats around, and Yuyuko continuously tries to poison everyone's drink. It's because in Gensokyo, it's almost like a law to have to spell card duel. Also if Reimu dies Gensokyo will implode b/c of Hakurei Border.

To this day, I'm still curious as to why ZUN included Sariel, the (arch)angel of death from Judaism whom nobody can decide a name or title for. I mean it just seems oddly specific for ZUN to include some angel from some religion he's probably not familiar with. Was he researching something? Did he just stumble upon it? Did he think, "Yeah, I think it'll be cool to add an angel of death in the game."? Sariel is up there in my list of favorite characters, but it boggles my head as why ZUN put him/her in.

Theory-Headcanon: What if HRtP is the first and last Touhou game in the timeline, so in HRtP there are 2 rutes Hell and Makai, so I think these 2 could've been 2 different incidents one happening at the beginning of Reimu's career and one being the last. I think the hell route it's the beginning, I think Konngara was in life the last shrine maiden before Reimu, she had an extremely hard and painful life as a shrine maiden and a particularly gruesome death, this made her a vengeful spirit with the mission to destroy the Gensokyo that tormented her all these years, all Gensokyo panicked by such an incident and the absence of a shrine maiden to solve it so Yukari (or who ever was in charge) elected an orphan as a provisional shrine maiden to distract Konngara until they could find someone more capable, but the orphan miraculously bought peace to Konngara's soul and solved the incident and with a miracle Reimu's career started. Shrine maidens are destined to die young and Reimu wasn't an exception and she should've died a long time ago but Reimu always won miracle after miracle, you know it's said that everyone has a protective angel well I think we also have an angel of death that sets the time when we'll die but Reimu defied so many times her death hour so many times that her actual angel of death "Sariel" manifested to take her but Reimu refuses to die one more time destroying her angel of death making herself inmortal, this also transformed her into a yokai (one of the strongest to ever exist), this made herself no longer worthy to be the shrine maiden and thus her story ends.

It's exactly what lets Gensokyo function. The entire point of the spell card system is so youkai can fight the Hakurei shrine maiden. If they killed her then Gensokyo would be kaput, barrier gone, reason and rational thought would invade and cause the youkai to die out.

Actually, going on actual canon here, Yukari stated that she is in fact, heavily weaker than the Yama in her extra stage in Sakuya's Storyline, where she states "Oh no, if you are as strong as the Yama you can do anything". Cam H Frog You're waaay off. Don't doubt the power of Yukari. Yukari's aren't that limited. She can pretty much do whatever she wants with boundaries, though some things may take some time, like creating a portal to the moon. And in terms of power, Yukari is one the strongest youkai in Gensokyo, only to probably be beaten by youkai like Suika or Yuugi. Also you know that Suwako is stronger than Kanako, except that she loses to her because of elemental weakness. Another thing is that people really get Keine's ability confused. She has the ability to CONCEAL history and create history. She cannot wipe you from existance. Rather, she make it seem as you never existed. Or create history saying you died. However, someone like Akyuu can see right through her history manipulation. If I were to make a list of the strongest characters in Touhou, it would be Yukari, Yuugi, Suika, Yuyuko, Yuuka, Toyohime, Yorihime, Eirin, and the strongest is Eiki. (Also the Dragon God) Some characters strength wise aren't godly powerful, but have incredibly powerful abilities. Like Koishi, Remilia, Flandre, Kaguya, Sakuya, Utusho, Suwako, Kanako, Satori, etc.

+ZXNova Sariel is the angel of the true God , the others are the strongest Youkai characters or lunarians etc .. I would believe Sariel is the strongest character in Touhou , definetly stronger than Yukari as God and his angels have no boundries and are eternal

+Stanisław Giers Kaguya can manipulate eternity. And essentially, angels would be stuck as "Lawful Good", and therefore would have boundaries and things they absolutely cannot do unless they want to fall. And don't forget, Sariel was beaten by a ten year old girl hurling yin yang orbs and paper talismans.

Let's be quite honest, she's just an angel of a weak god who isn't even strong enough to belong to one of the three main religions in Touhou. But then again the Hakurei miko has managed over the years to defeat immortals, ghosts, gods, angels, demons, saints, hermits and impressively overpowered youkai, so losing to her isn't such a bad thing.

remilia got into gensokyo since 1998 while EOSD take place in 2002 . remilia is even the cause of why the spell card rules got created when she started the"Vampire incident" Remilia started a rampage and killed a lot while trying to conquer gensokyo , got her ass kicked by powerfull youkai and then reimu created the spell card rules after that , remilia started the EOSD plot with her mist and indeed used spell card at that time Byakuren is another story but she isn't powerfull to begin with

yes i know that for all the pc-98 games , real battles to death were happening but because of the vampire incident where remilia started a huge slaughter and where she got her ass kicked by powerfull youkais ( presumly yukari) after this incident , reimu created the rules and the card ( she found the cards but decided of the rules i think) and shortly after that , remilia who wanted another spanking started the red mist incident where the spell cards rules were used for the first time

When you've got someone like Remilia - who just got into Gensokyou and frankly probably doesn't give a damn about Reimu's rules - or Byakuren - who only just woke up after a rather long nap - it's entirely possible that they'd skim around the rules a bit. Would kind of explain why some of the later bosses could be so damn powerful, since they're not completely adhering to the rules and their cards haven't necessarily been vetoed by Reimu (like they're supposed to).

from what i read in Grimoire of Marisa Fantasy Nature is something Reimu was born with its not consider a power that all hakurei have. Marisa also gave it a name so it could be restricted within a spell card so other could defeat reimu.

It's worth noting that those rules only effect AFTER Highly Responsive to Prayers and a couple of the other pc98 games. As I understand it, the "Danmaku Rules" concept canonically only comes into play after those. That's why you haven't seen Sariel or Shinki around. In fact, the finale during the fight with Shinki was so unbelievably brutal that it actually left a large chunk of makai in flames.

yukari actually planned on losing on the moon the first time so that it would discourage the youkai from going on conquests and just be satisfied with gensokyo. yukari "won" the second time around and managed to pull a marisa.

So that's why DEATH BATTLE hasn't covered any Touhous. Not because neither of the producers has even heard of Touhou, not because Boomstick pronounces it Toohoo and Wiz is still trying to correct him to Toho, and least of all because no other character could defeat a Touhou's attacks. Because Touhous would simply refuse to battle to the death.

Although not explicitly stated, Yukari is commonly considered one of the most powerful youkai in Gensokyo, although a few other youkai like Suika Ibuki and Yuugi Hoshiguma have been considered to be around her level. However, she might still lose spellcard battles to humans or youkai. Yukari does refer to Eiki Shiki and Watatsuki no Toyohime as being stronger than she is, and tries to avoid direct confrontations with them. Did you forget about that fan and the hardcore bondage Toyohime used?

It is implied in PMiSS that Yukari did create the great border around Gensokyo. Which means that she atleast was a part in the creation of Gensokyo.
