What kind of Yerba Mate do you take. I learned about it when I was in Peru. It is amazing. It not only is an appetite suppressant, but it does wake you up and boosts my mood. I was told it had properties of dark chocolate which contributes to the mood. I guess that’s why we buy are women chocolate for Valentines Day. As with many others I would love to see you give your scientific approach to Yerba Mate. If would be great for those of us starting a plant based life as well. I know it is rich in antioxidants, boosts energy and mood, possibly increase physical performance, helps lower blood sugar levels, and refuses inflammation. These are what they’ve done for me backed by blood tests. Has made my and my girls planter fasciitis disappear when drinking everyday. Thank you Dr. H for all you do!!

I'm an avid listener of this podcast. I'm from Argentina and I wanted to share my translated version of a poem about mate written by Lalo Mir. I have it hanging up in my living room so every time somebody asks me 'What are you drinking?', they can read it. Mate is not a drink. Well, it is. It is a liquid and it does go through the mouth. But it is not a drink. In this country, nobody drinks mate because they’re thirsty. It’s more like a habit, like scratching an itch. Mate is the exact opposite of television: it makes you talk if you’re with someone, and it makes you think when you’re alone. When somebody comes to your house, the first thing you say is ‘hello’ and the second is ‘some mates?’ This happens in every household. Rich and poor. It happens between talkative and gossipy women, and it happens between men, serious or immature. It happens between old people in the nursing home, and between teenagers while they study or get high. It’s the only thing parents and kids share without arguing or nagging. [Republicans] and [democrats] pour it without questions. Summer or winter. It’s the only thing we have in common, victims and executioners, good and the bad. When you have a kid of your own, you start giving them mate when they ask you for it. You give it to them lukewarm, with a lot of sugar, and they feel all grown up. You feel an immense pride when a speck of your blood starts sipping mate. Your heart escapes your chest. Then, as years pass, they will choose if they drink it bitter, sweet, very hot, tereré, with orange peel, with herbs, with a twist of lemon. When you meet someone for the first time, you drink some mates. When there is still shyness, people ask: ‘Sweet or bitter?’. The other person answers: ‘However you drink it’. Keyboards in Argentina have yerba all in between the keys. Yerba is the only thing that you always have around, in every house. Always. With inflation, with hunger, with military coups, with democracy, with any of our diseases and eternal curses. And if one day there is no yerba, a neighbor has it, and they give some to you. You don’t deny yerba to anybody. This is the only country in the world where the decision to stop being a kid and start being a man happens on a particular day. No long pants, no circumcision, college or living far from your parents. Here we start being grown-ups the day we have the need to drink mates, by ourselves, alone. It’s not a coincidence. It’s not just because. The day a kid puts the kettle over the fire and drinks their first mate with nobody around in the house, in that minute, it’s when he discovers he has a soul. The simple mate is nothing else but a demonstration of values… It’s the solidarity of putting up with washed out mates because the conversation is good. Because the company is cherished. It’s the respect of taking turns to talk and to listen, you speak while the other one drinks; and it’s the honesty to say: ‘That’s it, change the yerba!’ It’s fellowship made moment. It’s sensitivity to the point of boiling water. It’s the tenderness to ask, stupidly, ‘it’s hot, isn’t it?’ It’s the modesty of the one who pours the best mate. It’s the generosity of giving until the end. It’s the hospitality of inviting. It’s the justice of one by one. It’s the obligation to say ‘thank you’, at least once a day. It’s the ethical, frank and loyal attitude of meeting without any purpose other than to share. Lalo Mir

@@aUILanguageofSpace funny question, we don't have as much obesity in rich areas as in poor areas due to over consumption of starches, sugars and low cost survival foods in poor areas despite drinking a lot of mate. Yet we are still thinner than the average american, also we are in an economic crisis 24/7/365 so hunger and survival foods are always there but I would argue that mate is one of the pillars that keeps Argentinian health in check.

I have 2 trees about 5 ft tall and what's amazing is that we had two 15F winter events in three years with no effect on my Yerba Mate trees (one in-ground and one in a pot with no protection). Yerba Mate is an evergreen so you can enjoy Yerba Mate tea all year long. For me it feels better than coffee but in a different way, more focus and clarity, and it’s STRONG and you can definitely over do it! As I found out yesterday after drinking a litre of it strong and iced at work and then made a traditional cup and sipped a litre of that over the evening till bed. Geez! It’s definitely dehydrating and my mouth is sooo dry! And I couldn’t sleep. It’s way stronger than ‘I thought so will drink it in moderation. I can’t drink it like I usually drink say peppermint tea all day. It’s wonderful stuff though.

Which ones would be the smoked type? The ones are flavoured, perhaps? I sip the traditional type (for those that have watched the video of powder content in yerba, I use the lowest powder content) My contribution; sipping mate causes addiction. It is a healthy addiction. Also, this may explain why obesity is not so common in Argentina. Plus Fernet. Another miracle of mother nature. Thank you for the video!!! You are the best!

I was born in Argentina. I drink mate but like a tea, from a tea bag. We call it Mate cocido, the tea with a few drops of milk. ... as typical as the other way most Argentinians drink it. I'm the oldest of 5, all my siblings and my parents had mate with the straw.... but me. To this day I have no idea why I was never incline to have mate like most. Mate cocido, with milk or without, is so good too!

Dr Huberman I have tried the Yerba Matte as you recommended and it does work at greatly increasing my appetite I also read an article that said the rare new sugar Alulose spikes GPL-1 up to 70 percent. When I put it in the tea WoW I can easily fast till mid to late afternoon without hunger. Do you know of any studies that support the claim alulose does this?

Hello Dr. Huberman, may I have the reference info for the article you are referencing in this talk? Also, I have been trying to figure out (unsuccessfully) why GLP-1 agonists would not cause hypoglycemia non-diabetics. If insulin is increased and glucagon is decreased, I would think hypoglycemia would result. To your knowledge, is there a mechanism that limits this action? Also, do you know why GLP-1 receptors are considered beneficial for the heart?

I am taking Semaglutide Peptide and it most definitely can cause hypoglycemia if taken in too high of a dose for your body. No science, just my experience.

I commented on another video (older one). I'm torn on the GLP1 benefits. Prescription form. It delays/slows gastric emptying and increased postprandial volume. If one is fasting for weight loss or to lower insulin levels, wouldn't this be contra intuative ? Gastroparesis. The weight loss that occurs is from calorie reduction (people are full, nausea, early satiety). Does this affect gut hormones negatively? O love your knowledge and understanding, hopefully you can help me understand. Thanks ❤️
@shay5025
@shay5025 Жыл бұрын
The studies indicate that the delayed gastric emptying only comprises about 20% of the effect of the prescription GLP-1 agonists. It also wears off after a few months and all the various study participants continued their weight loss, insulin sensitivity improvements, inflammation reduction, appetite reduction, reduction in carbohydrate and fatty food seeking behaviors, and cardiovascular benefits.

I enjoy Source Naturals Yerba Mate tablets for my am caffeine boost. I usually don’t feel like eating til noon or later, so that part of intermittent fasting is easier. Now I may understand a mechanism behind it. Wish caffeine was not a bad idea later in the day. Maybe it would help the evening cravings, without the drawbacks. Any other food or supplement without caffeine that reduces appetite the same way?
