Hi Dr Kate, 3 years ago I started Keto doing most everything you mentioned. I lost 45 lbs. and dropped A1c from 7.9 to 5.2, Trigs from 252 to 55, Hdl up from 45 to 90. After a year I started leaning toward Ketovore and Carnivore and gained 20 lbs. back in less that 2 years. Seems if I eat more than 1000 calories/day I gain weight. I do OMAD or 2MAD also and the weight I gain is always belly fat. Just switched back to the original plan, more veg, less meat, Berberine, AVC, nuts, etc. I also have most Hypothyroid symptoms (runs in the family) which may be part of the problem. I look like a skinny 62 YO guy that is pregnant but has great labs, go figure.

Sounds like it's time to dig deeper - cortisol, microbiome imbalances, poor absorption, thyroid...all of that would be on my list to investigate! Food is definitely the best medicine, but diet doesn't always fix everything!

I am on Ozempic and so far 2 of the 3 reasons you list for not taking Ozempic are not true for me. I got a prescription, paid by my insurance and I am not and have never been diabetic. I have not had any digestive issues. I have limited my intake of fats, dairy and nightshade plants. My plan is to use this time to change my eating habits and develop a sustainable exercise routine. I appreciate the information you have presented but I will continue the Ozempic because it’s working😊

Great video and very informative! Is there any evidence that boosting this naturally carries the same side effects with regard to the thyroid that the synthetic drug has ?

There's a big difference between boosting natural GLP-1 production and hijacking GLP-1 receptors with the agonist drugs, especially in terms of side effects. No issues with thyroid and natural boosters that I've seen!

So I have a question about the pistachios. 83 g is about 2.9 oz. So an 8 oz bag of pistachios would be so we say three doses. At $9 a bag? How many doses of pistachio do I need to maintain to get the benefits I'm looking for ? That's one thing I find lacking. We talk about eating certain kind of foods to obtain certain kinds of nutrients or benefits. If it was medication I would have a dosage amount but if it's just food that I eat then how do I determine what I'm really getting ?
@DrKateLyzengaDean
@DrKateLyzengaDean 2 ай бұрын
You're right - the food we eat can't be assessed the same way we assess a medication - it's a long-term, cumulative effect. In the same way that we know that regular consumption of foods like soda and sweets causes diabetes, but a single soda or cookie does not...concepts of "dose" aren't always very helpful when it comes to food, because it's too complex and interacts with an individual person's body in different ways. We have to remember that we're not machines or robots, we're a system of astoundingly complex organisms...so, the best way I can answer your question about pistachios is that researchers found that consumption of this particular food caused higher GLP-1 to be produced - so, let's say you swap your daily snack of a handful of popcorn with pistachios - that would be a good strategy to boost GLP-1. Combine that with other fat-loss strategies, maybe like the ones I talk about in a few other videos in my library, and you'll start to see some momentum. It's not the same as medication, but it is still science.

Thank you for the information! Please, correct me if I am wrong but since GLP1 appears to be thriving in nutritional ketosis, wouldn't it be more logical to change the diet to one that helps maintain nutritional ketosis? True there is some production of ketones by fiber fermenting bacteria but their output is miniscule compared to the 1.5-2.3 mmol/l levels of blood ketones I get on the carnivore diet without oxalates, salycilates, fibre and so on.
@DrKateLyzengaDean
@DrKateLyzengaDean 5 ай бұрын
Some of the foods that are best at increasing GLP-1 aren't necessarily part of a keto diet or carnivore diet. Fiber (from fruits and veggies) can significantly increase GLP-1 production, as can flavonoids (also from fruits and veggies). So you can boost GLP-1 without being in ketosis - which is good news for folks who don't do well on these programs.

@@DrKateLyzengaDean How about allulose: it seems to be acting in a similar way to Ozempic by stimulating GLP1, without the side effects and life-long dependency, and doesn't have such a hefty price tag? Unfortunately, I can't post links here but there are numerous studies about it. Allulose doesn't raise blood sugar, doesn't have the devastating effect of fructose or artificial sweeteners of previous generations; it could be employed as a tool to ease a sugar addict into a low carb lifestyle.
@DrKateLyzengaDean
@DrKateLyzengaDean 5 ай бұрын
Agreed - there are lots of ways to lose fat and stimulate GLP1! I made this video to highlight a few of the lesser-known, food-based GLP-1 boosters for those looking for an alternative to Ozempic. It makes sense that allulose would stimulate GLP-1, given that it's fiber, but it can cause bloating and BM issues for some folks. My goal is to shed light on many different options so folks can find something that suits their needs and situation. We're all different - there's no one solution or diet that works for every person! 👍🏼
@fractalbeans9513
@fractalbeans9513 5 ай бұрын
@@DrKateLyzengaDean Technically, it's not a fibre; it is an epimerised version of fructose and, hopefully, studies are right that it doesn't get metabolised as fructose, and just appears to be excreted intact instead. Looks like it is potent enough to activate or switch metabolic pathways just by being present in the environment, and we have no idea what exactly is happening. As someone said, “Nature is not more complicated than we think, it is more complicated than we CAN think.” Thank you, Doctor, it's a pleasure talking to you!

6:45 - A quarter cup of shelled pistachios is about 30 grams. You said that 85 grams of pistachios significantly increased GLP-1 and that's equal to 1/4 cup - this is not accurate. It's either 85 grams (almost 3/4 of a cup) that increases GLP-1 OR it's a quarter cup, but that's 30 grams...Please clarify. Thank you.

Hey, lady ! People are overweight not because they do not know "how to eat and what to eat". They are overweight because their body systems are completely destroyed by hormones, antibiotics and chemicals in food. Some of us used food for years to combat emotional issues (depression, stress, losses). Those pistachios do nothing if you are already obese - taking an additional 100 gr of pistachios just adding about an extra 500 ccal. Ozempic stops craving and enables take control of the diet. Yes, if you are used to a huge portion, then you'll feel enosia on Ozempic, if you do not drink water and do not take fibre (wheat bran), you'll have constipation on Ozempic, and finally, if you use food to tackle emotional issues, then you'll feel depression. Just 0.5 doze Ozempic got me out of insulin resistance, normalized cholesterol and halved my blood pressure medication. None of the "natural" weight loss" programs could do that for me; besides, I am very physically active and have always watched my diet.

Hi, there! I'm so glad that you found a solution that worked for your weight loss needs. The reason I made this video is that not everyone wants to take pharmaceutical GLP-boosters (or can afford them), and I want them to know that there are other options. Also, some folks don't tolerate GLP-1 drugs because of significant side effects (despite some of the solutions you listed). I'm certainly not anti-GLP-1 medications in all situations, but I do think that evidence-based, alternative GLP boosters should be considered for those who need them. 😁
@natab1064
@natab1064 2 ай бұрын
@@DrKateLyzengaDeanThank you for sharing your thoughts about alternative GLP-1 boosters. I strongly believe that such natural remedies as garlic and onion can help boost the immune system, but they are useless in treating viruses. Treating serious chemical imbalances (depression) with yoga and meditation can lead to suicide. Using a handful of pistachios to improve light deviation in the production of some hormones might help if the deviation occurred due to poor diet, but to claim that such approach can help people with serious hormonal problems is irresponsible. Hormonal imbalance can be treated by hormonal therapy, not by diet-changing suggestions.

I'm not going to continue debating the value of Functional Medicine with you. My videos and channel are here for people who are looking for options - valid, evidence-based options that may help them address many different health and wellness concerns. Not every solution is appropriate for every situation - that goes for pharmaceutical therapies, supplements, and nutrition alike. There is nothing irresponsible about educating those who want to learn, especially because everything I suggest is rooted in scientific research (you can see the studies in the video description). If my approach doesn't appeal to you, that's fine - you're welcome to find a different YT channel that aligns with your opinions and values! 👍🏼
