Actually that's a good creative idea, but it wouldn't be able to yaw effectively. Perhaps a couple of arms could tilt, or use a tail fan like a traditional copter. If one octocopter can lift 15kg, then eight should be able to lift a person. Strap a harness underneath, and you have your own airtaxi and FPV without the goggles! :-)

Great build! If you want to stiffen the frame to reduce that flexing you was talking about, consider doing some cross bracing between the legs. Basically when you have a flat construction like this it's hard to reduce that type of twisting flex. So out of plane bracing will make a huge difference. Ideally the joints should not take any load at all (in rotation or a torque), an ideal frame is equally stiff with ball-joints as with rigid joints. Anyway something to try is to attach some wire or like fishing lines diagonally between endpoints of the legs and beams.

Hey man this might sound weird But i use "5 second fix" on flexi joints to lock them out after using makeshift parts and they become rock solid. The stuff is a uv based resin polymer that's used in 3d printing.

Hey great design! It"s good that you're getting into the carbon-fibre construction. Have you considered bolt hole placement in your designs? I noticed that you have some bolt holes quite close to the edge. While carbon is very strong, if you reduce it down to such thin sections (especially with the 0/+-45/90/+-45/0 degree layup), the bolt holes can shear out quite easily. It's best to leave at least 2.5-3 times the hole diameter between the edge and the hole. Especially with the large forces experienced by the octo, little design aspects like that can help prevent things from unexpectedly cracking.

Hi Daniel. Did you consider mounting the flight controller to the non isolated part of the frame? I'm flying a "flip fpv pro", and several people (me included) experienced wobbling issues which were solved by directly mounting the FC to the "dirty plate". The issue is that the isolation causes a delay in the feedback that the FC is picking. I know that it will be tricky with the design you have, as the entire center portion of the frame is isolated, but I'm sure you'll figure it out ;-) p.s., thanks for the inspiring videos. I really enjoy those!

You are lucky you can fly that beast in that neighborhood!! I live in a pretty similar kind of neighborhood and if I took something of this caliber out to test fly in my front yard I'd have every cop in our district here and probably swat and FAA CIA exc..... These folks here where I live freak the hell out when I test my quads out. Usually it's just my smaller racing quads but be damned when I take just my little old S500 out for a short test flight people start running around screaming and grabbing there children and rushing them into the house. It's really bad here in Ohio. The media just about once a week has a story about drones and they try their hardest to demonize them. Obviously it's working here where I live. Thankfully though my family owns a 115 acre farm outside the city where I can go and fly but thing is no wifi out in the boonies and cell service is hit and miss unfortunately. So no testing there until we get wifi installed if ever.

any somewhat fabricator (or even carpenter) can design a better shape than the cross joints that you used now, so ask a neighbour redesign your cross joints, also add GLUE for surface connection, should be a neglectable investment and creates improvement to rigidity, you'll have to do this anyway

I just halted my project for a couple weeks and in that time I researched and researched more and the day I picked back up where I left off I had my S500 flying.
