I'm 48 years old. I watched this show religiously as a kid. I have the entire series and TV movies on DVD. I always found this to be David's most heart breaking moment, to be so close to a cure and yet to be denied. Bill Bixby's performance in this scene is masterful. You can't help but feel so bad for him. It moves me every time I see it.

The best scene in the entire show. I loved how David realized what was gonna happen and he knew he was gonna turn but he held it in long enough to let himself cry. I like it when the Hulk at first has such a docile expression on his face, as he's regarding the Frye creature in front of him, but then after the creature knocks him into some machinery, throws a chair at him and misses, and then grabs him and shoves him crashing into some other machinery, the Hulk suddenly roars at him like he's saying, "OH, YOU WANNA PLAY, HUH?!!!"😂

This was actually, IMO, the best Hulk-Out in the entire series - one of the few that is triggered by adrenaline, not just pain. When Banner realizes that he has lost his last chance for a cure, we see the eyes, and a full 2 minutes passed before he fully transforms. We see the horror in Banner, the tears in his eyes -- Banner knows he has lost, and it may be Bill Bixby's finest acting in the series. Then, the Hulk fully manifests, and he is not angry because Banner wasn't. For the first time, Hulk sees someone who looks just like him. Hulk can only stare at this new creature, not truly understanding what he sees. And then the other creature starts whaling on Hulk - for no reason, as far as Hulk is concerned. It takes several minutes for Hulk to really get angry and start defending himself. Hulk even has tears in HIS eyes. That's well done. But when you see the two of them together, you see Lou's so well developed body, and Dick Durock as Frye's creature just has his size working for him in this scene. He's not as muscular as Lou, and it shows. Good fight scene, but we know Lou would have kicked his ass.

Hulk SMASH puny... hulk? It's pretty obvious here that Banner's Hulk is stronger than The First. Plus he seems to have better regeneration, as the Hulk was shot before and healed back from it quickly.
@Dhampir101980
@Dhampir101980 2 жыл бұрын
well, Del’s Hulk was much older, and he was shot 3 times repeatedly. Plus, the regeneration only happens during the state of transformation( we see this all the time with David). So if Del’s hulk had turned back into Del before dying, then the regeneration would healed the wounds and he might have survived

I can never get enough of David's expression at 1:07 when he sees Dell Frye start to transform. He finally sees what turning into the Hulk looks like from someone else's perspective, it's like he's thinking "Is THIS what happens to me when I change?". The show might have never used the Abomination, but Dell Frye's Creature was definitely the closest thing to it. Plus it finally allowed for Hulk to fight someone his own size (or I guess his own strength) instead of tossing objects/people 10 feet in the air like every other episode. And also at 4:55, I love that detail of how when Hulk finally gets angry instead of curiously staring at Dell Frye, Dell Frye's hit doesn't even push him back compared to how he was throwing him around just a few minutes ago when he was still dazed at seeing another Hulk-like creature.

Definitely, one of the very TOP episodes of the series and one of my favorites! I put it with "Married", "The Psychic" and "Prometheus" as the best of the series. It really scared me the first time I saw it as a young kid and has always fascinated me. The reason that Frye's Creature was thinner and not as muscular as the Hulk was because Dell Frye was a LOT older than David, as well as he took a LOT less of a dose of gamma radiation than David had given to himself. Dell's radiation came directly from the sun, where David's came from a machine that controlled the amount given. They chose Dick Durock because of his height when he stood next to Lou, and he looked REALLY creepy in that makeup...

Way too many comments to read through and this may well have been said. The brilliance of this episode is that David turned into the Hulk because of his rage that the serum had been destroyed. Usually when the Hulk appears there is a fairly straight forward goal for him to accomplish. Break free, defend himself, save someone, etc. Dale's Hulk actually understood that the syringe in some way was bad for him. In this case though it would be "recreate serum to prevent future transformation based on a technology we don't understand." Not the Hulk's strength. I think that is why the Hulk is just confused at first. Then bad Hulk starts wailing on him and it takes a minute to redirect. Once he refocuses, he takes over the situation. David is younger and in better health than Dale so it not surprising that his version of the Hulk would ultimately be superior. I do like that there are very different body types between the Hulks just as in people. Great job by Ferrigno and Bixby.

A series with emotional impact. It's the exploration of a hero character made at its finest. No hundreds of explosions one after the other, no empty and exaggerated battling, effects or CGI. Human emotions mixed within the essence of what a fantastic hero is: incredible, but not futile. No stupid punchlines to make teenagers shiver here and there, nor simply an "action guy". At the end, it's really just " a guy". This show is one of the best hero adaptations for such reasons. It has real depth and it's a real piece of art. The credits song still makes the heart feel the character's pain to this day.

Yeah that one was awesome, I read once that there were not 2 but 3 actors who portrayed Hulk, of course it was Bill and Lou but there was also another actor who was a friend of Lou who once went with him as a guest and when one of the producers saw him he said that it was like if Lou and Bill have had a child as he looked like Bill but he was stronger and yet not as much as Lou, and from that moment on they hired him to add some "middle" takes of the transformation, he always appeared briefly in the transformations until the Prometheus chapter were he was able to appear on screen for a full episode. Although the close ups were all Bill Bixby´s he was able to have some fun finally breaking some stuff.

In pretty much every show, David touched the lives of everybody he came in contact with. He was incredibly kind and compassionate and always thinking of others before himself. Still, he could not have accomplished all that he did had it not been for the Hulk. The Hulk saved his life repeatedly and was able to do so much that David couldn't. I wish the final show could have shown David come to terms with the fact that he was the Hulk and embrace being the Hulk instead of trying to find a "cure". He could have continued on in life as a "Superhero" as opposed to a drifter. Each time a show ended that showed David hitchhiking into the unknown, and leaving people that loved him, it always made me sad. I remember thinking "he's all alone again". That's a bit sad for kids to see over and over again.

One of if not the most emotionally powerful episodes and scenes in the series. Banner's anguish over the loss of the cure is so real, Bixby completely convinces you he's David Bruce Banner falling into despair over the loss of a proven cure for his condition. The different music to set it off is also important, it's just too bad we don't get to see an all-out brawl between the two of them and it's mostly smashing stuff (that explodes with electrical sparks even when it has no electricity).

This was TV everyone tuned in for, and it was glorious. Sure, by today's standards it would seem corny but back in the 80s it was perfection. You actually felt Dr Banner's emotional journey (through Bill Bixby's excellent acting) as he wrestled with the "monster within" - we haven't seen that kind of emotive experience since (with perhaps Ed Norton's iteration) - we get loads of "Hulk" but very little of the man with whom he resides within - miss those TV days (as all people who get old do hahaha!)

I didn’t appreciate how honest and genuine his grief was until I had enough life experience to know that type of pain and the emotional response.
