Humpbacks are part of the "Rorqual" family which also includes the Blue Whale and the Fin Whale. The most instantly identifiable about them are their throat grooves which make their mouths expand ten fold. Humpbacks, being the friendly, approachable creatures they are had the misfortune to become prime prey for whalers after the harpoon cannon with exploding harpoon was invented in the late 1800's, to give you a very sobering statistic, not nearly 20 years after its invention 90% of all the humpbacks were wiped out. There's a movie about Whaling shot in the fifties where Humpbacks are seen approaching the factory ship and the narrator says "It would appear they are mocking us since they are of a species which is outlawed, we cannot shoot them according to international law." So the fact that they're still around is a miracle.
