Exactly. It's the Gospel of Matthew, and no matter how you rearrange the music, the base still comes from God and The Holy Bible and Jesus's teachings.

well it is based on the parables, BUT it was born out of the hippie love movement, so in a more universal take on things it is about LOVE.. but then isn't that what Jesus' teachings were about??? love thy neighbor?? It's a really beautiful show, with great songs, and when done well it's so moving :)

It may be all you say, but why then do they seem to make such a point of declaring this "not" religious? Especially if, as you say, that Jesus is Love. I go as far as to say He is the author of love, so why not declare it?

They're singing about "Bless the LORD my soul!" It may not be religious, but it's definitely more than a story about love, freedom and joy (which are all totally amazing!). Without the bottom line being about God and the stories of his word, this musical "Godspell" wouldn't have even been created.

I don't get how anyone could say this isn't a religious show. Almost all of the lyrics are holy scripture... It's a retelling of the Gospel of Matthew... Perhaps it would have made more sense to say that the production isn't a religious *service*, as in, those who attend aren't intended to worship there.

I'd say it's more about the building of a community, and using the lord as a way to portray it. Saying this is a religious show is like saying the book of mormon is a religious show.

I love Hunter Parrish in Weeds, but I don't understand why is he apologizing for this being a religious production. I wish they'd taken a chance with this musical and hadn't been so faithful to the original.

I don't get why these guys are downplaying the religious subject matter for the show. Much great art and music is religious or came from a religious background. There are great hero stories that are religious. Why so nervous? You don't have to share the beliefs of the religion to enjoy the stories-- but they are religious stories. Not a problem.

The point of the show was never meant to be an accurate retelling on the book of matthew, But rather to take the principals of it and to spread the core themes of the bible which are love, forgiveness and community. The writer himself is not religious and didnt write it intending to be so. The show is completely up to interpretation, meaning each viewer can learn something from it, because it has a universal theme. In no way are they downplaying religion infact both Anna maria and George both come from catholic upbringings. The point of this show is in no way to just retell the parables but to connect them to universal themes that anyone can practice

Godspell uses stories and ideas that have become religious through interpretation by people both in their time and now to comment on these issues. Sure it is religious, but only because of interpretation. Whatever you take away from it is what it's about - a person may see the character of Jesus simply as another man who lived and died, and therefore his actions carry no higher meaning other than those basic themes. It's quite a great commentary on this idea, in fact.

In Godspell there are really only two characters, Jesus and Judas, and then everyone else is just like a performer, but like the performer has their own song and personality and stuff. So she basically played herself more or less

Not everyone follows your religion. Thus, this story means differently to every person who views it. Perhaps the story of Jesus is one of great meaning TO YOU, but have you ever thought that other people have varied beliefs? To me, Jesus is just another great man who lived and died. He was loving, charitable, and smart, but he was not, in my eyes, a god or son of. Therefore the story holds a different meaning to me. Does that make it clearer?

These kids have great voices. But fun is not the reason for this story. Who is the source of joy? Who is the source of love if it isn't Jesus Christ, The Lord? Put on a good show, but that's all you silly children are, "a show." I don't think that was the intention of Godspell.
