Yep, that's how I am when my brothers are playing their sports. "No idiots, you're doing it wrong! Agh!" It's much easier to see it that way than the dating kind of relationship that people think. Siblings are often rather close and bicker a lot of the time but in the end, they have a really close bond.

Happy new year! Okay. I just. Let me just say this right off the bat: Your comparison that Gon and Killua see and treat each other as the exact things they are searching for (ie Killua sees a brother/family in Gon; Gon sees Killua as a younger version of his Dad) is something I never realized but now makes total sense looking back on. The fact that they separate after then discovering and achieving those bonds that they found in one another is also somewhat symbolic. It's like, they were using each other almost as crutches, wanting those bonds but unable to find them, and at the end when Gon meets his father and Killua finally has his little sibling back, they acknowledge that they don't NEED each other by their side anymore, but that they are still closer than ever before, now that their friendship in one another is unique and not just filling a hole that they were missing. They aren't just "filling in" for the other's goal now, now they are separate and complete people that still care for one another and view the other as their best friend. It is no longer a need, it's a want. And it's a true symbol that their friendship at the end of the series is more than just give and take or one out of convenience, they are actual best friends. I never even realized this... I also really like your parallel that Gon is walking into the darkness, after living only in light, and vice versa with Killua, hence why they are basically seeking out one another in some way or fashion. Also, thanks for explaining Killua's actions during the final part of the hunter exam, I always have a hard time explaining when my friends watch it and they wonder why Killua isn't upset like Kurapika and Leorio, but the way you described it, like he is frustrated and wants to figure him out, is perfect. Thanks again for another great video. Can't wait for part 4 and the Zoldyck Mansion arc, I have a feeling it's gonna be a wild ride now that we are getting into parts where Killua and Gon literally never leave each other's side.

Happy New Year! Yep, they really did need rely on each other heavily. As their friendship evolves we'll see how they stick with each other because they enjoy each other's company instead of just fulfilling a role for each other. I like the way you put it that they became complete and don't NEED each other at the end but are still best friends. You pretty much highlighted all my favorite parts of the video and the points I wanted to get across. I can't tell you how happy it makes me. I was irritated at Killua's behavior during the Hanzo/Gon fight but stepping back to reexamine it gave me a better perspective, and hopefully my audience as well, which is what this series is all about.

1999 manga definitely changed Killua's personality in the beginning to be darker but I think by doing that it emphasizes the effect Gon has on him really well. And thank you! Another great video in this amazing series! I particularly liked your point about killua seemingly being a symbol of ging in his gons eyes. I also really enjoyed the part on gon and hanzos fight and how killua's pride/upbringing caused him to be more unsympathetic/harsh in his mind but it was precisley his lack of understanding of the situation which constantly draws him back to gon - he knew that gon could offer him the missing void he left his family to seek. Cant wait for part three and i know you'll do a phenomenal job when covering the chimera ant arc where the cracks in their relationship start to show

I'm glad you are doing these analysis videos. I really enjoy them. Let me elaborate on one point you touched on, but did not explain in full. (It would have been off topic for your _Shinyuu_ series.) You show Gon and Kite's meeting on Whale Island, taken from the 1999 version of HxH. This to me is the major place where the older version is better than 2011's. In fact, the first 3 episodes of 1999 are condensed into the first episode of 2011. Some of that is filler, such as the subplot about Kon and friends (Kon is the name of the fox-bear cub Gon saves after Kite had to kill his mother.) But some is directly from the manga, such as Gon and Kite meeting early on (first chapter I think). Madhouse (the 2011 studio) probably thought it didn't need to spend time with a character we wouldn't see again for 70 episodes. Instead, on their introduction of Kite, Gon does not even remember him at first, then he has a short flashback to their meeting 3 years ago. Gon's despair at the end of the Chimera Ant arc wasn't based on some half-forgotten (and inaccurately told) memory of Kite. This was the man who saved Gon's life, and then immediately disciplined him (probably the first man who ever did so) for having to kill the mother fox-bear. This was the man who revealed to Gon that Ging was still alive, and that he was a great hunter. Not only that, but that Kite was Ging's student. Gon essentially gained a beloved uncle at that point. He was not a man who Gon would forget. As long as I'm off-topic anyway, I'll include another, probably filler, occurrence from the 1999 anime. After the Heaven's Arena arc, Gon takes Killua with him to Whale Island. They meet Aunt Mito and Grandma, Mito gives Gon the device Ging had prepared for him, etc, just as in the 2011. The older version adds a substory of Kon's puppy getting critically injured, and Gon swears to himself he will not die. They bring the puppy to Mito's house. At first, Killua is convinced that it won't survive and the kindest thing to do is kill it quickly to have its pain end. He is so convinced and head-strong in this thought he even injures Mito's arm seriously when she attempts to stop him. Gon does convince him otherwise, aided by Killua's shock at having unintentionally hurt a friend and surrogate mother. Gon then had the idea of combining his Nen with Killua's and imbuing it into the puppy to give it strength and a chance of life. This plan works. (Maybe too well; we see a quick shot of Kon being very surprised at seeing his puppy turn on a Nen glow. 😎 ) Quick on-topic fly-by: Killua learns from his friends that he should often seek other solutions than killing. Back to your regularly scheduled aside: Gon completes a circle regarding Kon. His actions led to the death of Kon's mother. However, he was not only able to save Kon's life, but that of Kon's puppy as well.

Thank you! The 2011 adaption is pretty damn good but leaving out Kite in the beginning was their biggest failing for exactly the reasons you pointed out. I double-checked on the part about Whale Island and that is filler. The 1999 anime had some great filler and a lot of other anime could take notes on how to do filler right. I actually don't even remember that scene but plan on rewatching the 1999 anime soon. When I watched it earlier this year (oops, last year technically) I only got to the end of Heaven's arena and the rest was taken down from KZbin. Womp Womp.

Oh god that would be great. I would guess that more than half of the current HxH fandom hasn't seen the 1999 anime. It's different enough to feel like a fresh experience and actually has good filler. For the 2011 dub, I haven't kept up but plan I purchasing the blu rays to support it. My birthday is in a few weeks so hopefully I get Vol 1 then ;) . It's streaming on Toonami's site last I checked. So they may have some exclusivity for it at the moment.

I always wonder if togashi has a bunch of stuff planned after the anime. Like maybe 100 chapters worth planned. Illumi said that killua will one day want to kill gon if he stays with him. Idk if that is togashi foreshadowing a situation in the future or just something illumi says to control killua. I personally love gon and killuas relationship but it would be awesome for that statement to come full circle

Illumi was probably trying to influence Killua, but since he's removed the needle from his forehead I think the chances of it happening are slim. Although, Silva's words at the end of the Zoldyck Family arc, saying that Killua will return one day, are pretty ominous as well. Togashi was definitely playing around with the idea that Killua could betray Gon one day, and even revisited that in the Chimera Ant arc when Biske told Killua he would one day leave Gon to die. But again, that's all before removing the needle, so we'll just have to wait and see ;)

This was amazing. Like honestly the ending makes sense if you think of it like that. I was always mad about how Killua chose to leave Gon for Alluka when he had never mentioned Alluka before in the series. But it makes sense that Gon was sort of filling the void. Also, I am someone who ships GonxKillua, but, I actually think there are a lot of hints in the manga/anime that point to Killua actually being gay. And I don't mean gay as in gay for Gon, but as in, I don't think he is attracted to women/ will have romantic feelings for them. On the other hand I think Gon just doesn't have a preference. That's a topic I think would be cool to look into. That's just my opinion. What do you think?

Thank you! Because they are both young adolescents it's hard to say. Even though about 2 years passed from the beginning of the series to the current manga chapters they don't appear to have grow much in the sense of...hitting puberty. If we get a time-skip in the manga and they grow up a bit it will be interesting to see if either develops romantic feelings for anyone. I'm pretty confident saying Gon is straight just based on the effort he put into his date with Palm and his discussion with Killua in the gym saying he went on plenty of dates with older women (even though both situations were rather innocent). Killua on the other hand is much harder to pinpoint. Throughout the entire series he really doesn't get close with anyone except Gon and a little bit with Zushi and Ikalgo. Even when Gon develops friendships with those around him Killua's focus always remains on Gon. So he's a bit of a mystery. If he did have romantic feelings towards Gon I would find it hard to believe that he would want to separate from him after he rescued Alluka. However, if I stumble upon anything that strongly hints towards romantic feelings I'll be sure to mention it. One thing I noticed not too long ago was that almost none of the hunters are in relationships or have children. I guess that would be tough to manage unless their partner was a hunter as well. It's like that wasn't something Togashi wanted to focus on or even intentionally didn't include. Hunters are somewhat selfish and must always be on the hunt so it makes sense in a way.

+TalesOfNerdia yes u totally agree. But there are also Scenes where Killua is clearly not interested in any girls. Like Bisky and Retz. Also he was raised to not want any friends except for his family (which are all boys) he also seems appalled by the race Gon would go in a date with Palm and states he had never been on a date due to his training, and then he's only been with Gon, which he then says he wants to stay like that. I think those are some hints to Killua being gay. But, also you are right they are still kids so it's hard to tell. Hopefully Togashi will start the manga again and we can see what happens!

Tales of Nerdia I was just wondering because you also mentioned scenes that were only in the 2011 anime. I must say that while I really live their interactions in the anime exam arcs and wouldn't want to miss them , I think the manga is more ... realistic? well, the development of their relationship feels more natural. yes they are immediately drawn to each other but not best friends . since they were already so close at the start their close interactions in heaven's arena a.k.a. after " earning" killua's friendship in the zoldyck family arc don't stick out. which is really sad.

Oh gotcha. Yea, I thought about including differences between the 1999 anime but it became apparent early on that it was too different and would be a distraction to the true purpose of the video. I wanted to still mention the differences in the 2011 anime though because I think that is the source that most fans are familiar with. I agree that the manga handles their relationship the best overall, but that scene in 2011 of them messing around in Trick Tower is soooooo good.

I do not believe that Illumi directly used his Nen abilities to manipulate Killua. I believe Killua killed Bordoro only to disqualify himself because he had given up on trying to be "just a kid" for a brief moment.

This is also possible. He was already frustrated by the Netero's underestimation of his potential and the last time Netero frustrated him he murdered those punks in the hallway on the blimp. Add in the despair he experienced from the confrontation with his brother and it's reasonable to say he just gave up.
