Fun fact: Togashi wrote this arc right after a vacation in Egypt where he got a history tour on how mummified body parts from tombs were sold as commodities to museums and private collectors, and it reflected in the themes of Yorkshin arc. This vacation also inspired him to design two of the Ryodan members with mummy [bonolenov] and theban nobleman [phinx] aesthetics.

The conditions to Chrollo's abilities have been explained after his fight with the Zoldycks in the manga, but the anime left it out and never explained them, so if you want to know i'll just write them here 1. Chrollo must see the ability being used with his own eyes 2. Chrollo must ask the target a question about Nen and get an anwser (it dosen't have to be the ability itself) 3. The victim's palm must touch the handprint on the book's cover 4. All these tasks must be completed within an hour On top of that, the book must be open at the page of the ability that Chrollo wishes to use, and if the person whose ability was stolen dies, it disappears from the book

The ‘twist’ of Illumi killing the 10 dons for Chrollo is such a genius moment in a sea of genius moments in this arc. Yorknew is such a masterful arc in HxH (and just shonen in general) and yet it’s not even my favourite of the series! Togashi is such a phenomenal creator. It isnt really that hard to understand that they prepared for this exact scenario considering they knew they both had missions that cancel each other out so the first to get the mission done phones the other instantly. 2- silva charges the attack >phone rings > silva redirdcts attack to not hit . Voila , simple and logical. He knows illumi is calling him because they set up walky talkies for this exact mission as i said in 1-. and some of the questions you ask here are literally answered in the episode. Yes they do know illumi was hired by chrollo to kill the 10 dons and illumi also knows aboit their mission , hence why he contacted them asap to inform them he finished his contract so that they dont kill chrollo for nothing. the zoldycks take pride in taking up any assassination job no matter the requirements as long as they are getting paid. when they end up against competing each other or disagreeing on something they just each go for their mission and whoever finishes first gets his money. even in family problems they function this way as seen in a later arc. The zoldycks also take pride in not involving random innocents (zeno in particular )

You are just looking for inconsistencies where they dont exist. 2- idk what any of what you wrote there meant. but go back to my previous reply , i explained exactly how zoldyck handle missions where they are competing against each other. There is literally no logical inconsistency here , it's just the way they choose to work ,instead of cancelling one contract they just do them both and whoever finishes first gets the money . Simple and pragmatic. 3- he knew exactly who they were fighting which is why he asked them is HE still alive knowing that they were fighting chrollo aka his client and silva knew exactly who he is talking about. if he didnt know they had that mission how the fuck would he know to ask for his client and how would silva know who he is talking about ? Illumi called silva for the sole reason to check in on chrollo/inform them that he finished his mission and to cancel theirs. It was essentially a race to who finishes first. the reason he said" are you fighting?" in a surprised manner is because he thought he might have been too late in killing the dons , if chrollo died there he gets no money , hence the surprise. IDK how it is possible for someone to misinterpret an obvious scene so badly. also zeno quite literally said he knew of illumi's mission in the episode , so by extention silva too considering they were on THE SAME MISSION , so you would expect the best assassins in the world would do something so basic as share info amongst each other in a joint mission,like zeno telling silva about illumi.

A) they absolutely knew of each other's missions, just not the time line that would occur during them, or any possible surprise details that could come up. So Illumi may have had no idea that Chrollo wasn't planning on hiding the entire time, when the fight would take place, or even that there couldn't be a separate battle that comes up. So his question still makes sense in any scenario. B) It's not hard to imagine that a family with as much reputation as the Zoldicks wouldn't get at least a good amount of money before the job was done (an upfront cost), and since once the person who hired them dies the contract ends there's no reason for them to decline any job since they'd still get paid a hefty amount even without finishing theirs. C) Based on their conduct towards their job, it wouldn't be hard to believe that they'd try to be as legal as possible when it comes to conflicting assignments, so they just go off of whomever finishes their end first so there's no blame on their part for the job technically failing. You're free to believe that all of that working out is just a happy coincidence, but narratively it still all follows regardless.

It is explicitely stated even in the election arc that even in conflicting family matters , this is how they function , they just encourage all parties to chase their goal/agenda until one party comes out on top over the others . We literally see this in the election arc in action. the only Rule is that in family issues the zoldycks are forbidden to kill each other . In this case illumi finished the cobtract just before chrollo died. in an alternate world where illumi was 5 seconds late , chrollo would be dead and silva would let illumi know. it's so simple , idk why you are trying so hard to make it complicated . This is episode is incredible because it contrasts so well with episode 51, in a sense that while the Requiem served as a showcase of how powerful and deadly the Phantom Troupe is, this episode shows how intelligent they are as an organization. They are not only vicious killers that can unleash total chaos, but also very organized and strategic, being able to pull off some Ocean's Eleven plans to get away with their crimes.

I have this theory that the whole battle was an opportunity for Chrollo to steal their abilities. Well we already know that much, but I have a feeling he decided this AFTER hearing Neon's fortune which did NOT warn him about this fight which meant it was safe to at least fight and attempt to steal a Zoldicks ability. We already know Chrollo is really smart and plans ahead. There is no way he decided to fight the Zoldicks, even with Illumi as backup plan, without solid proof he is going to make it out unharmed.

I mean even without the prophecy it's obviously what he's trying to do. He's using paralytics and Owl's cloak, he's clearly trying to capture them so he can extract information and powers later. But yeah, maybe without the prophecy he wouldn't have been quite so reckless. Interestingly, it's possible that he can guarantee stealing a technique as long as he captures them (for example, with Shalnark's help since Shalnark can force them to answer his questions and satisfy the conditions for the nen stealing ability).

I've also read that argument before from other HxH fans where this particular scene with Kurapika showing his eyes has a different vibe in the manga and 1999 version compared to the 2011 version. I personally haven't read the manga before the Dark Continent arc and the Succession War arc, as well as haven't watched the 1999 version either so I won't be able to compare the scenes but I personally think that just because the 2011 version gave off a different vibe conpared to the manga and 1999 one, doesn't mean that this scene in the 2011 ver is bad, they're just simply different on how they adapted the scene and it all comes down to the personal preference of the viewer to which version of the scene they prefer better whether it be the manga version, the 1999 one, or the 2011 adaptation.

They do this on most important points of an episode, where they try to really focus on it by slowing down time (fights) or repeating it (Gon breaking the glass at the water divination test) with swelling music whereas the original just let's the scene speak for itself and gives more attention to detail. The target audience of the remake is younger, I feel. Like, too young for Chimera Ant arc.

There's a misconception that zeno is admitting chrollo is stronger then him. But he doesn't. When chrollo asked who would win in a fight zeno says ofcourse he would win. However if he was actually trying to kill him it would be different. He is calling him on out that he knew he wasn't going all out. But as you saw. That backfired cause zeno and Silva beat him in a minute. But zeno still doesn't know what he's capable of. So that's why he said it could have been different

Correct. The dialogue was made to be ambiguous and is very misinterpreted by the fanbase. I think it's written perfectly to showcase how strong one party is without undermining the other. Zeno is aware that he is far more experienced and most likely stronger, but he is wise enough to know he can't predict what Chrollo could pull off and therefore is not a guaranteed win. That's what makes HxH stand out from more basic black and white shonens

22:43 It said to not walk down stairs you haven't walked up before, alluding to the underground auction first happening in the underground hall (how fitting). Which is why I find it annoying how the anime remake showed stairs leading *up* to the basement hall where Chrollo was in the previous episode because it directly contradicts the prediction. This episode was also sloppy in adapting the manga, where Togashi made sure not to show chains on Kurapika's hand during this time. Even when he offered to find Neon's location on a map, he only conjured the dowsing chain in the manga. The Phantom Troupe would surely have noticed the chains on his hand when bid on the scarlet eyes and then went to get them.

Funny thing about the people getting offended about comparisons is that they probably don't know that Togashi took tons of inspirations himself, and he openly and proudly admits it. A lot of Togashi's works come from him taking things that he loves, expertly meshing them together, and adding his own touch to master what came before in a new way. You don't have to be the first to be original, you just have to make it your own in a way no one else has. Clearly those people just blocked out the forgery plot in this arc, where Gon tells Zepile (probably spelled that wrong) that just because it's a copy it didn't make his pot worthless. Then there's Chrollo's ability, remember that nen powers are also a self expression of the user as much as just useful abilities (Hisoka is fickle and sticky, Illumi is manipulative and shifty, Uvo was confident and powerfully simple, ect), I'm not going to say more beyond this because that would go into things that couldn't be gathered from this point, but considering that Togashi was bashed for being a copy of something else a couple of times during his career it's not far fetched to believe this concept is and/or was on his mind a lot during his creation of HxH.

this episode got me asking about how you can hire a zoldyck. do they have SOP on how to do a job? do you send a request to a specific member, or do you send it to the head and they'll assign who they think fits for the job? do you discuss how the job's done? if you do, how and where do you do that? do you go to their house? are you safe from mike if you visit? or do you go to a specific location? how do you get their number for easier communication? how often is the discussion? is there a pricelist? you know, it's a business essentially close to a commission, so i'm assuming there's a pricelist right?

I'd really recommend watching this episode in the 1999 ver too (episode 62). Imo, some scenes are directed far better than they are in the remake. I love 2011 but I do think how they adapted the overall tone and atmosphere of this arc is a big downgrade

Yeah I watched the 1999 version first, and remembered how this moment (especially how Kurapika reunite with Gon and co.) was far more emotional. Kinda shame lots of people missing out on watching the older version because they think it's obsolete, I wish there's at least a compilation of scenes that are done better there or just don't happen in the remake~

In Brazil, it's kamehameha. And I had never thought about that either, I'm also curious to know if the way I've always said it and thought about it might be a thing only in Brazil. And yeah, Chrollo and the Zoldyck are very fascinating. The Zoldyck are extremely professional, and Chrollo is simply a genius. Also, now that you've seen a glimpse into Zeno and Silva, I want to recall something: Killua is said to be the most talented Zoldyck EVER. His potential is just crazy. And Chrollo is a beast for surviving that 2v1 while trying to steal their powers instead of killing them

Remember. In order a power to be really strong, you have to put strong conditions on it. Copying someone else's nen is SOOOOO strong cuz you are literally having a technique that someone mastered, he trained for it and became good enough to catch chrollo's attention. In order to copy so many techniques you need some strong conditions. No spoiler ahead, just some ideas from the fandom about what his conditions are 1. He needs that the victim explains him the name of the ability and how it works. 2. He can only use the ability by going to the page on the book, but the book has to be open (this is such a strong condition cuz chrollo basically has to only use 1 hand ) 3. If the victim dies he can't use the ability no more Zeno said 4-5 conditions but this 3 are the one that are pretty much confirmed. I can be only this one's since Zeno only tooka guess

The conditions have already been explained at this point in the manga, but the anime didn't include it, so i can just write them here 1. Chrollo must see the ability being used with his own eyes 2. Chrollo must ask the target a question about Nen and get an anwser (it dosen't have to be the ability itself) 3. The victim's palm must touch the handprint on the book's cover 4. All these tasks must be completed within an hour More so, the book must be open at the page of the ability that Chrollo wishes to use, and if the person whose ability was stolen dies, it disappears from the book
