Speaking as an American, I gotta say... the outstanding quality and quantity of unbelievably great music from Australia and New Zealand never fail to amaze me. Hunters and Collectors, The Church, Paul Kelly, INXS, Icecream Hands, Little River Band, Split Enz, and most of all, my beloved Crowded House, shoulder to shoulder with The Beach Boys and The Beatles as my favorite band of all time, Neil Finn is the greatest songwriter alive. Man...must be something you guys put in the water down there. Well done.

Speaking as a Yank who was around at the time, I’ll put it like this: “Human Frailty,” “What’s a Few Men” (repackaged here as “Fate”) and “Ghost Nation” were not tough to find in record shops, in American editions from record labels here, but you had to see them on the shelves and be curious; I don’t know that they got much promotion. After that it was as if the band vanished. So Crusades and Napoleon in Russia admitted as clear influences, I’ve always been able to hear Mark singing about how tough it was to get heard in America as a band from Oz. “The biggest army the world has ever seen”: keep in mind we’re talking seven musicians in the band itself. And the riff from Boston’s “More Than A Feeling” seals it for me. (Yes, yes, also “Wild Thing” by The Troggs, but go with me here.) They must have come over here and just been flat ignored. Which is a crime. I was in graduate school and caring for a sick relative at the time, and the internet was just barely a thing. So one had to be a dedicated reader of alternative press to find out about “unknown” bands. But if I’d known they were touring near me I’d have absolutely tried to attend. When I stumbled on a Canadian edition of “Demon Flower” a year or two later I realized I had missed out on this whole album as well. That’s how it was back then. The journey between Oz and the US is still a long one even now.

When this was used for the AFL everyone of my friends made fun of me cuz I am a Collingwood supporter and cuz it mentions Big Black Birds they thought of me and my footy team.. I let them think what they wanted. But this is one damn awesome song and Mark Seymour is such a honey...H&C are totally an Aussie Icon.. and please no making fun of my choice of footy teams...

Like many others in the comment section, I have to admit the guitar jingle in this song is much like the one in 'More Than A Feeling'. But except for that, it's a completely different song. Take a loot at 'mama se mama sa mama coo sa' in 'Wannabe Startin Somethin' by Michael Jackson. It has been used by so many musicians in the past few years.

+victory5959 Yes, the title is a hint - the holy grail referring to the legendary cup of Christ which was believed to exist and a legend among the Crusaders that they would find it - and drinking from it would give someone eternal life. (You know - even Indian Jones got in on the action). But the "holy grail" in this song also has the double meaning of trying to find "the answer" to all life's problems - or a quick fix that will explain everything/solve everything.

+TrailBlazer65 Well, the song can mean different things to different people - (apart from it's historical reference to the Crusades/Holy Grail legend) - but I can see the connection with footy - the winner's cup (ie Holy Grail), the battle between two opposing forces, and drinking from the sacred chalice (beer) that will bring glory (eternal life) and
