Speaking as an American, I gotta say... the outstanding quality and quantity of unbelievably great music from Australia and New Zealand never fail to amaze me. Hunters and Collectors, The Church, Paul Kelly, INXS, Icecream Hands, Little River Band, Split Enz, and most of all, my beloved Crowded House, shoulder to shoulder with The Beach Boys and The Beatles as my favorite band of all time, Neil Finn is the greatest songwriter alive. Man...must be something you guys put in the water down there. Well done.

Speaking as a Yank who was around at the time, I’ll put it like this: “Human Frailty,” “What’s a Few Men” (repackaged here as “Fate”) and “Ghost Nation” were not tough to find in record shops, in American editions from record labels here, but you had to see them on the shelves and be curious; I don’t know that they got much promotion. After that it was as if the band vanished. So Crusades and Napoleon in Russia admitted as clear influences, I’ve always been able to hear Mark singing about how tough it was to get heard in America as a band from Oz. “The biggest army the world has ever seen”: keep in mind we’re talking seven musicians in the band itself. And the riff from Boston’s “More Than A Feeling” seals it for me. (Yes, yes, also “Wild Thing” by The Troggs, but go with me here.) They must have come over here and just been flat ignored. Which is a crime. I was in graduate school and caring for a sick relative at the time, and the internet was just barely a thing. So one had to be a dedicated reader of alternative press to find out about “unknown” bands. But if I’d known they were touring near me I’d have absolutely tried to attend. When I stumbled on a Canadian edition of “Demon Flower” a year or two later I realized I had missed out on this whole album as well. That’s how it was back then. The journey between Oz and the US is still a long one even now.
