I found you guys from watching "Field dressing a deer" put on by Vermont Fish & Wildlife... Also, Venison Field Dressing Video Part 1 - Gutting.wmv, is another good video for beginners, and experts alike.

Great podcast and great topic as always. You guys really are the “real deal” in my book. Your methods and thought process are EXACTLY how I operate and, let me tell you, it produces. Sometimes I feel like we should keep this a secret, but the reality is people way overthink things. If they can’t shoot a deer from 300 yards out of an open grassy food plot from a nice heated hut drinking a hot beverage then they don’t know what to do. This is intentionally noted as an extreme and I truly have no disrespect to those or anyone in between. However, you have eluded to the simple spontaneity and having fun with it that people forget to become one with nature. I will go so far as to say that if you are up tight and stressed that wildlife picks up on that. You almost need to become one with nature when you are out there doing what you do. Rule #1 when hunting big country should always be to answer the question of how am I getting a deer out of here safely before you lay one down. All other rules will come back to that and then your primary focus can be to get one down. It’s really that simple. It is your hunt and you can take or do what you want as long as it is safe and within the law. You can quickly and easily up your game or what you take away from it by following the things you guys talk about IMHO. I am here in New Hampshire. I hunt NY, VT and NH but have always wanted to hunt Maine as well. Maybe some day I will see you up there and, if you’re ever looking for another guy who’s not afraid to put 10-15 miles on in a day, give me a shout. I am always game to try something new even if it means moving deer to the next guy because I could care less about that. He has to get to you before I catch up with him. ;) Good luck the rest of the season in NH, VT or ME

You got to at least try to put the odds in your favor, deer can be predictable and unpredictable at the same time.like Rodney says you gotta have a little bit of luck on your side. No matter what style of hunting you do.

Not sure if you're all still up in Maine, but if so...come on home. The 2nd rut in VT is epic right now. I've never seen so much daytime movement here. (the poor young doe are being brutally hunted by the bucks) I'm sure you've all heard but VT got two new records this year, Jenne's Bridgwater deer had the best rack ever and another hunter broke the heaviest deer record, #267 Franklin county.

I wish there was a way that you guy could visit Western North Carolina, and spend a week walking around down here , it is legal to bait , the limit here is two bucks , two does and I could get those in one day without getting out of the blind that is thirty yards from my back door , the first thing you would notice is that there are very few deer over 19 months old

Gentlemen, Love your content, especially the conversations discussing abstract concepts like, what deer think and how they behave to being followed, how deer relate, adapt, and use the woods as it changes due to logging, weather patterns, season, and human intrusion. Secondly on timber cutting, out west where I am, timber cutting was drastically curtailed in the 90s over the spotted owl. Deer numbers have been negatively effected due to no openings meaning no edge habitat. This along with the banning of hound hunting for cougars, banning of baiting for bears, banning of trapping, along with a court case that empowered a very small group of hunters to have no regulations on number, sex, methods, time, or season have dramatically reduced the deer herd. These deer are a mule/blacktail hybrid so it is not a direct analogy. But we could use some serious logging out here. Thanks again for taking the time to publish your content.

Warm rainy days on snow with a South wind are the BEST! The kind of days I would pay to hunt on! The deer have 3 of their senses working against them scent, sound, and sight are all in your favor on those days. Here in the mountains of Maine it is a blessing to have a South wind, usually little to no swirling and you can attack an area in a way that wouldn't work with the normal west wind which typically swirls around ridges. You can really sneak in tight on them.

All of our ammo belts are either custom made ( ourselves) or a store bought modified. You really can’t buy belts for deer rifle size cartridges, especially magnums. Taylor is made out of a piece of Moose hide. They are fairly easy to make and it’s a fun project.

Larry Benoit’s book, “ How to shoot the Biggest buck of your life” came out while I was in High School. The the 4 years after that I was stationed at Loring AFB in Northern Maine and tried to track down a big Maine buck every year up there but never connected . At 63 years old and now living in Central NH, it is still my favorite way to hunt even if not the most successful. I pray for a tracking snow every year but end up still hunting bare ground more often than not. .I love everything about your group of guys and the way you hunt , your videos and podcasts . Thanks

Rodney , once in my life I went to Arkansas,,,below Stuttgart to duck hunt and stayed a week and never saw a deer track , and what was wrong was they the farmers would not leave anything for the deer to winter feed on , I asked the locals if there was any deer there and they said yes but for some reason they all stay in this one block of land down the road here from the rice farms , from what I see on your films if there was a big campaign to up the winter feed n the areas y’all hunt , the population of deer would go way up.That block of land down there that people said had deer , who ever owned the block planted huge fields , food plots for the deer and I went and looked at it and it was full of big deer.
