I hunted mountain lions when I was young, never with dogs, never treed them, and only with a bow, but, age has made me come to my senses...Some animals are sacred, like mountain lions, wolves, eagles, hawks, etc., the meat you get doesn't justify the effort and expense, it's far better to just let them perform their job, in my opinion..I don't want to kill something because it's cool, or because I never killed one before..Some animals are sensible prey, and some animals are not..

South Dakota does not have a lot of Lion licenses since there is not a bunch of them and most people get the ones for Black Hills since that is where they are mostly with rare ventures into the rest of South Dakota for younger males and females leaving the prides/families to form own groups.

Hey Clay, My seven year old daughter and I have enjoyed watching your videos. We got into them well before you earned notoriety with 'alone', but I can't help but to question your ethics behind this one hunt, even if your location of choice is well populated with mountain lions. You know as well as I that healthy mountain lion populations used to be endemic to many areas of the United States, but unfortunately, the vast majority of lion populations have dwindled due to overhunting and habitat destruction. Your video seems to be making the attempt to capture the kind of audience that would enjoy watching a rare takedown, it does not seem far from trophy hunting, at least I am having a challenging time making the distinction. Quite a divergence from your usual stuff. I also don't know how driving all over the country to find a lion really jives with your usual 'primitive hunting' techniques.
@clayhayeshunter3 жыл бұрын
Hey Troy, thanks for the thoughtful comment. Lions are plentiful in the western mountains even though they’re rarely seen due to their secretive nature. And lion meat is great. It’s a lighter meat, kind of like pork. If we ever do catch up with one, both the meat and hide will be used. Hunting lions in this way, by trying to walk one down on foot with no dogs, is one of the most difficult challenges in the woods.
@gladegoodrich22973 жыл бұрын
Several friends hunt lions here in Utah. Cats are all skinny because we no longer have any deer to eat. Out west of Cedar City every camera has lions on them but no deer. When it comes to deer or cougars the wildlife biologists have chosen cougars.

Actually there are more lions in the western states than ever before. The state wildlife biologist recommend that a portion be removed each year.
@pinesandtraplines2 жыл бұрын
Mountain lion population has to be controlled unless you want to have them over-hunt the deer population. In Canada, some provinces allow mountain lion hunting due to the need to remove a certain amount each year. We have much more wilderness here in Canada, which is why we've allowed the hunting of them in some places. Unfortunately, dogs are illegal to hunt in my province (where mountain lion hunting is also legal) so you end up having a very hard time tracking the lions into the deep bush.

@clayhayeshunter3 жыл бұрын
First, mountain lions are not endangered. If they were there would be no hunting season for them. Second, what makes something a “trophy hunt”? If you mean to hunt something simply for a head or hides, then I’d somewhat agree with you. But don’t assume that’s what this is. I’ve eaten lions many times and it’s actually very good. You should try it sometime.

Many people obviously are naive and uneducated about wildlife and their conservation. Predator populations must be kept in check or they take over everything and the entire ecosystem suffers. Too many predators equates to minimal to no prey which in turn turns to the predators starving or becoming diseased. Please educate yourselves because when you don't you just look stupid. Keep up the good work Clay, love your vids!

Lion meat is great. It would most certainly get eaten.
@rudamchu3 жыл бұрын
If you're really a hunter and you're 63, then you would know the whole thing about the predator/prey (herd) balance/dynamic. Just in case you didn't ... there needs to be a proper balance between predators and the predated herds number wise. This is the reason that wildlife game commissions need to issue certain amounts of tags for predators so they don't outgrow their territorial numbers according to land area and herd sizes. Also, it isn't wise for a so called hunter to call out other hunters with an assumption that they won't eat what they killed ... doesn't sound very hunter-like. Also, most wildlife populations (prey and predator) cannot manage themselves without man's intervention, as man has already made that impossible with our intrusions into their normal habitats with all of our cities' and towns' developments. Now we have to actively act as the stewards of what we've destroyed, so unless you suggest that we revert all the humanly populated real estate to wild land, that's just how it is.
@GeorgeWHaydukeIII63963 жыл бұрын
@@rudamchu I disagree. I'm sure you've spent plenty of time hunting and observing wildlife in nature, but until you've really participated in, and worked on long term scientific studies with controls and comparative group, habitat and range consideration, your assumptions that predators will eventually wipe out their prey are baseless assumptions. The best hunting I have enjoyed is in wilderness areas and areas where predator/prey relationships are still intact and haven't been effected by man's attempts to improve hunting success or prey populations. I know it seems counterintuitive, but it's true. Thanks for your opinions, and how did you know my daughter's name is Felicia?

Hunting, Big Cats, Bears, Elephants, Giraffes etc etc, is just horrendous to me, there's no reason, (and anyone who does this don't think there is any difference, cos they're isn't), we need to start to look at ourselves, as a bowman and firearms enthusiast, to kill a creature has to be a God given genuine reason, this isn't it. I'm just being honest, the amount of creatures killed for sport, cos that's what this really is, is beyond comprehension, I saw a female cat killed the other day with no thought of where it stood in terms of cubs, etc, it's sociopathic, but there is point in explaining to someone with these tendancies as that one of the definitions and traits, this is a great channel for many things but this is pretty insane to me. (psychopath born, sociopath made), and I'm no soy boy leftie, hunt for needed culling or food, not sport. Just my opinion and I'm entitled to it. Very bad Karma!
