My brother has lived Melbourne for many years. Looks like he and his family may have issues. Here in Myrtle Beach we get threatened and hit with stuff from time to time but in my 24 years here nothing I would run from. I remember when Ian came through and the issues you had in your previous home. Hopefully its all good this time. I don't wish harm on your neighbors to the north but as you say feel grateful and not guilty...

Good luck. I'm in Houston. Been through many storms. Hurricane Harvey came though and heck , water started coming in my house. And in. Lost my house and two cars. Our atea had never goten like that.I got rescued on a boat. I temember seeing people on the roofs of their houses. Helicipters.Floating above submerged cars. It was surreal.

Survivor guilt is actually a thing, normally connected with a crisis event. It's not a normal thing though. People (especially those who suffer from anxiety disorders and/or depression) need treatment for it. Sounds like the dude didn't use the term correctly.

Milton became a Cat 5 with 185mph sustained winds and 225mph gusts. Pressure 897 fifth lowest pressure on record. That's a giant tornado. This storm is almost exactly like Wilma which was a Cat 5 one of the strongest ever in the gulf. Then came across the state and exited at FT Pierce. There was tremendous damage even on the east coast. Here in Ft Lauderdale the power was out for 3 weeks. Telephone poles and trees were knocked down. It happened a few weeks after Katrina and there wasn't much news about Wilma because all the news was about Katrina. Losing your electricity sucks. No tv, no computer, no cell phone, no gas, no lights, no air conditioner, etc. For most that's the worst part. I filled up with gas and if the power goes out I'm heading for a hotel up north. And everyone in the state gets hit with higher insurance rates which are already sky high.

Reporting here in Canada seems to be a little more balanced. Eg.- For this summer's fire disaster in Jasper, Alberta, they specified the percentage of destruction (30%) and showed high arial shots showing the context of the affected areas. For reporting south of the boarder we mainly rely on US sources. But I honestly hope you all fair well.
