*Husqvarna did upgrade to a metal console. The issue is, they discontinued these older models and only designed a new metal console for the 2020+ models, which includes the ST224s, as well as all newer Poulan and also grey Craftsman branded units. I've been told the new metal consoles DO NOT work on the older units, which is why they sent me the same plastic console to fix this one. As it turns out, the Husqvarna rep I originally spoke with was technically correct when she mentioned an "upgraded metal console design", sadly this was only referring to the newer 2020 models, and she failed to mention that.*

With a problem this big they should really remanufacture a metal one for the older models. As someone who just bought a new Husqvarna st224 it's a little concerning they won't fix their mistakes.

I've got a ST230 with the same problem. First thing I'd like to say is that this was, by far, the best KZbin repair video I've ever seen. Clear and concise explanations with crystal clear photography. I also appreciate your attention to detail. I'd be a customer if I were anywhere near you. But I'll have to settle for being a subscriber. The tab on my console snapped two years ago in the middle of our snow season. Interestingly, the local Husqvarna authorized repair depot claimed to have never heard of this problem. Regardless, my machine was out of warranty and it was going to take them several weeks to repair it. I improvised a stopgap fix involving a couple of eyebolts supported through the console with fender washers and nylock nuts. Then I cabled the broken part to a position where the transmission works again. It's still holding together but not exactly in the correct position so the gearing is off. My plan is to order a new console and replace it before next season. Thanks to you, I can do this with confidence. Question. What do you think about the idea of reinforcing the plastic tabs with some sheet metal before installing the new console? (Or, I may just replace the console and sell this thing, warning the new owner not to exceed 4th gear.) Also, can you recommend a better engineered brand of snowblower out there today? Thanks.
@EliminatorPerformance2 жыл бұрын
It's not a bad idea (strengthening the plastic) I still have the old one laying around somewhere, figured some JB weld and some sheet metal would do it. Swap the pin for a longer bolt and I bet it would hold. Ariens professional series snowblowers, or Honda. Lots of $ but built to last
@BabalukaMokra10 ай бұрын
That is what I did on mine as a repair. i made two plastic sheats shaped around what was left of the plastic. I thought I got it all good, and worked fine last winter. For some reason, the metal sheets are already out of place when I picked the blower this season. It's a bummer because I felt like the smartest guy in the world to make that fix, but now I am back to hating this stupid company for these childish designs. I will never buy anything from the Husqvarna brand. They should have provided free replacement made of metal and include the work needed, in order to apologize to customers for their stupid engineers. Here I am, with a foot of snow outside and an out of order snow blower, instead.

I had the exact same break, 4 days ago. Machine is only about 3-4 years old. No way was I bringing it to a dealer, and no way was I changing that console. I drilled a small hole in the remaining plastic, positioned the fitting as close to original as I could, and mechanic wired it as tight as possible. Fired the pig up, and raced around the driveway!! Total time, about 30 minutes. Woo Hoo!! Wish me luck that it lasts. If not, more wire !!! Your vid helped a lot, thanks!!

Thank you for these videos that you made on this. They helped me to replace mine. I added large, flat fender washers where the pin slides through in hopes of spreading out the pressure and twist on that thin plastic area. I guess I will find out if it helps, but it certainly can't hurt. Also lubricated the heck out of the cables and all moving parts with WD40 White Lithium grease. Noticeable difference already. Thanks!

Wow. I'm glad I came across your videos on this unit. I have one which has served me well. But I'll have to lube up that hex shaft and take it easy on the console levers. Thanks! It looks like there are a lot of big flat surfaces on all the high stress areas of the console around the shifter linkage. This summer, I might try reinforcing them by epoxying some steel plates to help with the twisting. Could also make a sleeve to provide more support to the pivots as well. Not much to change with the cable routing and bending though...

This problem happened to me I think it's been 2 years ago. Back then, I came up with some of my own fabricating, only as a temporary fix. I have the ST227. My fix would only allow the machine to run in like first to second gear and reverse. I ordered the new console off of Amazon. The cost was around $35+shipping. The job went much better than expected. But I totally see the week spot of this machine now. And now I am committed to keeping the key parts lubed as discussed. This is a great machine. It is a sad fact that this is it's week link . I had that exact model. I bought it when my old MTD track drive went down in the middle of a snow storm. I hated it. Only good thing i have to say about that model is the motor was very easy to start and ran very good. the blower was used on a gravel drive way and i did adjust the shoes but i still got a few stones here and there. one little stone stopped the impeller and got jammed behind the impeller. After getting it out i managed to get finish the drive. next storm had some ice on top of the snow. less than a quarter inch. after two passed i discovered the ice had slightly bent the auger and it was causing the blower to shake. The final thing that happend before i decided to fix my old mtd and sell this was while using it for the next storm it started to have issues where it would act like the drive belt was slipping. After looking at it i saw that the belly pan was designed with an opening and disc drive system would get wet and not grip. I have never seen a snow blower with so many issues in so little time.

Hey. Great video on maintenance and commentary on reliability. I recently bought the model down from this ,st124, and for being the same size specs , the build quality is night and day. Engine is 212cc not 208cc (from same manufacturer???). Cables are nylon coated and run on pulleys not sheathed. Drive line is steel shaft not cables. All connections on the console are steel mounted not plastic. It is a stripped down model of the st224 and built old school. I absolutely enjoy using it and think it will last 10 times as long (hopefully haven't jinxed it lol). I went ahead and lubed all critical points you mentioned and will maintain them. Next time you are in a husqvarna dealer, check these models side by side and you will see what I am talking about. I highly recommend the st124 over the st224 and even higher end models.

All the 2020 models received the new "metal console" you heard me mention in the video. The original Husqvarna rep I spoke with was technically right when she said there was supposed to be a new console with metal support. However, what she failed to mention was that it would not work with the older units, even if there were made up to early 2019

My ST224p has the same arrangement. Honestly I never put it in 4th gear. I usually wait till we have at least three inches of snow to get it out, and 2nd gear seems to be the sweet spot. I suppose taking it back to the shed one might put it in a higher gear occasionally, but it's nice to know that might be an issue. Overall so far I've had good luck with mine. I cover it with a tarp and store it under our deck year 'round. Just this year the cables have frozen up on me; I think that's water as the last time out, the snow was pretty slushy. Time to get it into the garage and do some PM on it before something fails. Thanks for the videos. Despite the engineering foibles, it's still a snow throwing machine that works well for me. I run it maybe half an hour at a time, and have pushed it into berms left by our friendly county snow plow (just to open up my driveway again). It works hard, and all machines need preventive maintenance. Lots of folks don't know anything about their machine, they just use it. Which is fine, but if you don't know about "things mechanical" have someone like this guy service it for you regularly.

First, very helpful video. I own the ST224 and when it works, it works great but you are spot on about these design issues and crappy maintenance instructions from H (as you highlighted in the earlier video). I have been religious on the oil changes and lithium lubrication but thanks for pointing out the internals and which grease to use. I did actually open it up last post-winter season but I must have used the wrong grease because, now for the first time, my auger cable has been giving me problems (not budging unless I bring the thing inside the house to warm up). I unfortunately broke the bracket at the heated handle that holds the auger cable so I am trying to source that part. Also thanks for the advice on the 5th+ gears. I rarely use those higher gears because it is too fast for the impeller to throw the deep snow anyway.
@chipsawdust5816 Жыл бұрын
Yeah the only time I might run in those higher gears is to walk it back to the shed. I try to plan my snow removal so that's the last place to clean before I put it away, so rarely go into the higher gears. Mostly I've used 1st or 2nd for snow throwing. Third maybe...

My gear shift assembly has now failed as you indicated, breaking where the cable is secured under the dash panel. From your video I see the new part # should be 581 13 12 12 though this will still be plastic and the bad design. I can order the dash panel and wait several weeks or more, I'm told. Because the panel was replaced once before I sure hate to replace it again, with something still flawed. So...I wonder if I can just drill another hole next to where the original broke? Or fabricate some new type of gearshift lever closer to the trans box or frame, maybe with a shorter cable. I don't care if the lever is by the panel or not. I just want something to work and not break again. Any ideas? thanks for the really good video and honest appraisal. What I am thinking to do instead, is find some sort of manual rotating crank to wrap the cable around and change gears that way. I would have to find a way to attach it somewhere or leave it hanging underneath, but who cares. All I need is to make the blower work 1-2 times a year for a driveway. Why spending time on Husqvarna parts that will certainly break again. What they are doing is an insult to human intelligence, and I don't like my intelligence insulted :)

Hi, I just bought a ST 224P today , I'm not sure if it has a plastic console or not, but I know it now comes with new engines and this model (P) stands for power steering, now after watching this video, I wish I had not bought it, of course I can always lubricate the axle shaft .pivot point and never go passed 4th gear ,if this is the only thing that could go wrong, I should be grateful not remorseful. what guarantee do I have with a different manufacturer ? they may have metal console but worse engine/ drive system flaws, right?,
@EliminatorPerformance3 жыл бұрын
The 2019+ models have completely different consoles with metal underneath them. These older models have been discontinued.

@@EliminatorPerformance You are right, I just picked up my new ST224, it has metal console, External LED light, I used it today for the 1st time and loved how it performed, so I'm now back to loving my new blower and have zero regrets, I still follow all your recommendations on lubrication, it would be great to see a new/updated video on the new gen st224 blowers.

Would it hurt it at all to just remove the return spring? I feel like that's not necessary in the first place
@EliminatorPerformance3 жыл бұрын
So because it's a cable, you need some form of return pressure created by the spring to pull the cable back. My understanding is that the tension is simply too much, and in the higher gears it puts more stress on the bracket. I'm going to flip up the other snowblower tomorrow and count the coils on the torsion spring, as this one may have been wrapped more, because the other one didn't feel like it had the same tension.
@matty2helpfull3 жыл бұрын
@@EliminatorPerformance that makes sense I'm not use to cable machines after thinking about it if it was my machine I think I would take that heavy spring off and mount a weaker one elsewhere

So Husqvarna has lost me as a customer due to this crap! Absolutely ridiculous that I pay for the name and get an absolute shit product. I have had more issues with this than my extremely old Craftsman. First month I had the dam Husqvarna the sprocket came off! I put it back together and within 5 mins it was off again. I had to go buy a locktite compound that was good for 65,000 sheer strength and I have not had any issues in the last 4 years of owning this for the sprocket issue. Other issues have pissed me off also but that is for another time. Thanks again for your videos it helps me save a ton of money with preventative maintenance.

Because of the plastic console flimsiness which I experience yesterday after a snowstorm in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and after using the snowblower about 6 times only in nine years, and having it go into reverse mode with pieces of plastic on the snow, and, no quality replacement part for the console, I will never, ever buy another Husqvarna product. There should be a class action law suit for this defective product design. If anything, they should make a replacement with metal re-enforcement for the ST224! Husqvarna, you saved thousands by going plastic, but you will lose millions for doing so.
@BabalukaMokra10 ай бұрын
Count me in on a class action. We should ask all the money back, or the average cost of replacing this thing, and hiring other people to clear the snow on the driveway, all caused by a faulty product they sell and they refuse to fix despite the many reports.

There’s one by me for $500. Like new. Would you stay away from it?

No, just lube the axle shaft and don't go past 4th gear!

@BabalukaMokra10 ай бұрын
Two late now, but you should stay away even if it was $100. The amount of time and headache this machine will give to you over the years is not worth the $1000 you are saving. Unless you like to find yourself with problems to solve in the middle of a snow storm.

The same dang thing happened to me. i'll get it fixed then sell it.
@robertballerstedt568811 ай бұрын
This crap happened to me this weekend- sorta my own fault, as I shifted the speed knob while still engaged, and it cracked the plastic retaining the speed wire guide, looks very similar to yours. I was able to jerry-rig it and put 2 holes in the center of the 2 walls in the main boss, and used a plastic threading screw to hold the wire guide back in place (well, close enough for it to go about 1/2 speed). I will be designing a 3D printable part to mount to the underside of the console and retain that wire guide. Once i identified what had happened, i was infuriated because it is such a flimsy plastic boss that holds this in place- no surprise that this has happened to many other people. Does anyone have the part number for the console? I'd like to replace that at some point.

Unfortunately the time that we live in even a great company like Husqvarna who has a long history of manufacturing high quality robust machines has gone to pinching pennies in the engineering and manufacturing process to meet their bottom lines.

My Husqvarna 224 did this to me yesterday while plowing snow. I've had it for about 4 years, and have only used the think probably 4-5 times. it's ridiculous how cheaply made this was, and they will likely fail at some point. legitimately a reason for a class action lawsuit because they know the design is garbage and should be sending out free replacements.

More and more designs are done on computer , all of the flaws are over looked . For the money that you pay for this name is obesely not worth it any more . Profit should never , be the reason for dropping quality . This is seams all of the companies are going in this direction since they started manufacturing in China . Maybe we should bring back made in Canada or USA , Like the older machines that are still mostly running .
