I would seriously consider Soldier starring Kurt Russell. Awesome action in a sci-fi setting.

“Running Man” is the perfect kind of “bad” movie. It’s SO much fun, and never takes itself seriously. I also recently rewatched “Westworld” (yes, after the TV show, which is fantastic) and it’s even better than I remember. Yul Brynner is the most unlikely badass since Liam Neeson.

A few of my own suggestions. Escape From New York Logan's Run The Last Starfighter The Hidden Slither Equilibrium Enemy Mine (Is that action? It was slow in places) Demolition Man The Black Hole (I hesitate to recommend this one. It's one of my personal favorites though) Maximum Overdrive (Sci-fi action/horror) Pitch Black (And Riddick franchise) Universal Soldier Time Cop The Ice Pirates (Not for everyone. An acquired taste) Screamers Tank Girl Battle Beyond the Stars (Campy but essential to the origins of sci-fi action I think) Turbo Kid (If you like 80's twisted campy sci-fi action this is a 2015 throwback to that. It works IMO) Johnny Mnemonic (Again, this one is not for everyone. But I liked it) Flash Gordon was a childhood favorite. Speaking of childhood favorites D.A.R.Y.L and Explorers (The ending notwithstanding) Judge Dredd (1995) version Cyborg The One Outlander 2008 (This one I found surprisingly good) Freejack (Emilio Esteves before Young Guns fame) The 6th Day (Not Swartzenegger's best known, but it was decent flick) Jumper (Was flawed, but still worth a watch) Time Rider (Loads of 80's fun. If you like Remo Williams The Adventure Begins, Time Rider is a bastard cousin) Cherry 2000 The Core (Full of implausibility and impracticality. But fun IMO) Hollow Man Damnation Alley Lost In Space the 90's version (Hey I'm not saying they're all totally awesome. But it's scif-fi action) Black Moon Rising (Okay listen, it's a sci-fi action. Back in 1986 that car was science fiction. Watch this one for the cast of actors too. Watch the trailer and you'll see what I mean) Trying to decide whether Weird Science was science fiction action or fantasy action. My Science Project The Philadelphia Experiment Hell Comes To Frogtown (Sigh, there I said it) Ultraviolet The Eliminators (No seriously don't watch this one. I warned you. Don't even peak at the trailer. They have a mandriod) Wing Commander (I'm going to put my rep on the line here and say there are aspects of this movie I liked) After The Fall Of New York (is set in the far flung future of 2019. So there's that) Circuitry Man ( is a hot mess. But you'll spot little known and used B actors and actresses and be all nostalgic.) Dollman (Hey look, it was a legitimate sci-fi action movie. So it makes this list) Slipstream 1989 (Had Mark Hamil, Bill Paxton how could it go wrong with them? Well, it did. But it's sci-fi action so there it is) Project Shadowchaser 1993. (Picture a half ass version of Die Hard, and the bad guy is a terminator) Planet Terror (There is a scene where a woman is raped by a giant slug, or something. Which haunted me as a child, mostly because I was watching it with my parents when that scene happened and my mom started yelling to "Turn it off!!!" Joanie Loves Chachi. Watch the trailer and you'll see what I mean. That's it I'm going to bed.

+eldospinks I read more than I watch films. I make it a point to see as many films based on a book no matter the genre. There has never been a film maker and screen writer that didn't chew the source material, squat, and shit out something they called by the same name. Probably the truest adaptation of source material I've ever seen was the UK version of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Which was a radio broadcast and then a book then a mini series. Even then the new version of the film managed to be a thin shadow of the original source material that fell flat. Also I forgot to put that on this list because technically it IS sci-fi/action.

I'd recommend Demolition Man. I'm not much a fan of cheesy films, but the cheese in this film works perfectly. It's got great action scenes, a unique story, and two hammy, yet somehow still work, performances by Stallone and Stipes. And it does what a lot of films strive for, but fail to deliver,, in that's it's fun from start to finish. It's one of those "just sit back and enjoy the ride" type films.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984), I thought this was silly The Running Man (1987), This is OK. Dune (1984), This is worth watching Pacific Rim (2013), I don't like Mech's as the technology isn't viable. Popular films make people happy? I'm hoping for movies I haven't seen and so far I've seen rollerball and the remake. Second one... doesn't make me wanna see it.. Robocop is a huge classic and very popular. Or at least is with people my age and older. (35) The reboot... Didn't like it. Buckaroo Bonzai is a cult hit and one of my very special DVDs I had before everything was stolen from me. Running man is another classic that... I have a hard time rewatching. The documentary on what Dune was going to be rather than the hodge podge thrown together film that got made. I liked the sci-fi remake better. Pacific Rim.. Huge hit, sequel is coming out soon. I hope this last one is an interesting one I haven't seen or forgot about and liked. .. Damn.. Westworld... And okay it's like a jurassic park with cowboys instead of jurassic park. It's a movie my father liked, that I wish he wouldn't watch so much when I was younger. Damn.. I was in a mood for a good sci-fi action movie I haven't seen yet or simply avoided. Buckaroo Bonzai and that Sean Connery one were the most obscure. But out of all of these, I'd recommend Buckaroo Bonzai for a goofy sci fi action comedy romp that's very unique. Rock n Roll scientists saving the world! I'm thinking I need to make a channel like this, maybe put my childhood with a father who owned a movie rental store to good use. I just deleted 10 suggestions that are obscure sci-fi movies that I believe a lot of people missed but got praise when it was until it was eclipesed by a blockbuster. That happens a lot and is sad. There's a lot of interesting directors and actors who never made it because a big blockbuster that took over all screens made a lot of films have limited runs and seem like straight to video mess. SnowPiercer. That's semi-recent. More obscure than quite a few on this list, there's still a lot of people who haven't seen it and it's a sci-fi masterpiece. And don't get me started on foriegn films. :P
@Hyperdriveuk6 жыл бұрын
You make some good point, I think with time I will make some really quirky lists- but I found action sci-fi was mainly made up of the more popular films. Why is everyone with an opinion about movies always wants to toss out the one that made a lot of money and lots of people went to see? What is it about lots of people paying to go see a film that always reduces its "artfulness " and toss it off the list of "top 8/9/10" movies? We're not lemmings following movie critics off the cliff. We already pick the good movies we voted with our money.

(The weirding modules anyone) It left out key, KEY plot elements. And Baron Harkonnen is by far the worst one. Rollerball is a fucking bore of a movie. Wasn't impressed. Outland is a slow movie but it's decent, more a thriller movie and not at all action. It has rather good set design, feels like industrial sci-fi like you saw in the first Alien movie. Robocop?? Really? Why is it in this list, surely everyone has seen it. It's a masterpiece, one of the 80s action classics. Buckaroo Banzai is a love it or hate it kind of movie....I hated it. Couldn't interest me for one bit. Running Man, a small Arnold classic with Arnold at his ace game when it comes to one liners. Dune, again a love it or hate it movie, very long, very weird.....I love it. It has a unique visual style. Pacific Rim, same as Robocop, it's too big for this list. Everyone seen it. It's a good movie. Westworld, another slow 70s movie but it's very imganitive and the western setting is pretty good. Ignore the sequel Futureworld.
