I recently accompanied my daughter to select a new car of her choice where she narrowed it down to either the '17 Honda Civic or '17 Hyundai Elantra. She only possess mere technical awareness of automobiles and like many women is attracted to style, user features and overall comfort of the drive. She first drove the Civic, then the Accord. The Accord was nice, but, just a bit too large for her. Then, she drove the Elantra right after we left the Honda dealership. She immediately felt more comfortable in the Elantra. It was smooth and more roomy and quiet than the Civic. She claimed that the engine in the Civic was noisy whereas the Elantra was whisper quiet and equivalent to that of the Honda Accord. So, she bought an Elantra Ultimate and is very delighted to have done so.

We actually like the understated look but classy features, in our opinion the Elantra SEL trim has. We got a great buy because we bought last year's model as a certified pre-owned owned vehicle with original warranty still on the car. Depending on the mileage already on the car will determine how many miles are still on the warranty. Of course, a CPO car only a year or two old will be like brand new.

Love the reviews man, but just wanted to reach out about one thing. You've said on multiple reviews that Honda Sensing is a more sophisticated technology than BSM. I think a lot of people out there would disagree. Having a video feed of your blindspot makes you the decision maker as to whether there is enough room or not. Your BSM lights up when there isn't enough room, and is dimmed when there is. Which is the better/more advanced solution?

Looking back on this after 8yrs, this was a beautiful design. Very classy. Much better than 2018 Civic and Corolla. After watching this and other professional reviews on this car, I bought myself a new 2018 Elantra SEL in pearl white with a beige interior. I LOVED the car. It was comfortable, very solidly built, had an intelligently designed interior, and got phenomenal gas mileage. I agree the ride was a bit too stiff though. Unfortunately, my particular Elantra was having major issues within the first 10k miles. I guess I got a lemon. The engine, transmission, and suspension were all having issues. I could have overlooked it and continued to enjoy my car had the dealership nearby fixed the issues right away. Instead, they kept giving the car back to me after having it all day telling me they found no issues. This happened 5 different times. So, the issues never got fixed, forcing me to sell the car.

Another good review. The only gripe I would have are the comments on suspension. I would guess that at least 90% of people wouldn't be able tell between an independent suspension and a torsion etc. That should not be focussed on to determine on purchasing the car. Now if the ride is downright harsh, then yes mention that. But handling? 28000 for an elantra top end model. You have lost your mind if you buy that!

+Ladybug Adventures It is crucial that we hear about the car's negative aspects. When I find a review that just gushes about a product like it is the second coming, whatever that is, I question the reviewers motives. Did the guy just do half a job? Ladybug Adventures I ended up buying the 2017 Limited Ultimate package used for under $15k. I’d say it’s the best value in this segment and one of the few without a CVT even if you buy new. The higher trim level Honda’s are at the same price but you don’t get near the dealer incentives Hyundai is offering. There is a value in choosing the Hyundai over its competition at this time. Honda is offering some leading tech in their cars, but it was hard for me to justify the extra $4K over the Elantra Ultimate.

The Kia Forte SX has had these kinds of amenities (heater rear seats, memory seats, etc.) for years now. I also think he said "Civic" more times than he said "Elantra". I'm surprised Hyundai didn't offer a more powerful engine in its Ultimate trim. For $30K, the equivalent Civic and Mazda3 trims offer peppier engines with better fuel economy.

Hyundai already launched Elantra sport in Korea(Well, we call it Avente sport anyway), it has independent suspension, 1.6 liter turbocharged engine.(same as veloster turbo) I kinda liked the brand new elantra, so I'm expecting what they have done. But I don't think that this n/a engine version actually can compete with brand new civic. (It's much more nicer if you compare to old one, but it doesn't compete with old model obviously.)

Excellent review but two suggestions: Add more information on the engine. Like a pop box, not only for the HP, but torque at what rpm's. Second, I know the show is made in Canada for the Canadian market, but since 99% of the cars reviewed also sell in the US, could you please add as a pop box the Mpg in addition to the KM/L? Thank you
@gerardmartel42378 жыл бұрын
+cassmanio a drop box for mpg wouldn't do you much good. A gallon (Imperial) in Canada is larger than a gallon in the US, so our mpg's would be higher. You are better off googling a site to convert km/L to US mpg.

I own a 2017 Elantra. They have a 2.0 Atkinson cycle variant of the Nu engine. Mine, and according to many reports the dealer told me they get, is they make a loud ticking/tapping noise when cold. It sounds like a diesel. Dealer reported Hyundai said it was normal because the metal shrinks in cold weather and there is no need to look into the issue further. They further recommended I bring the engine and transmission to operating temperature before driving. I am not sure why they would recommend this since this requirement it is not listed in the owner's manual. The owner's manual only states that engine speed should be kept "moderate" until the engine reaches operating temperature. I have never ever had a car do this in cold weather and I have had my fair share of junkers. I think there is a real safety issue here that Hyundai is ignoring. Are they engineering piston slap into their engines causing them to wear out early and suddenly which can happen while in motion which can lead to a dangerous situation like stalling or power loss on the road. It seems Hyundai in Canada acknowledged this with a recall for an issue with the EXACT same issues on the Nu engine but for some reason failed to take action in the US even though all the engines came from the same plant. That recall was for ill fitting pistons in the cylinder causing knock when the engine was cold. This caused damage that required the engine to be replaced. It seems this issue is continuing on these latest iterations of the Nu engine and Hyundai is continuing to ignore them and blaming the customer about them. Hyundai needs to be held accountable for their product and address/correct any safety issues world wide and not in just one country.

One advantage the new Elantra has over the Civic is the passenger seat is height adjustable standard. The Civic front passenger seat is too low and not height adjustable at any cost. I think I like the back seat in the Civic better though due the more reclined seatback angle. I rented an Elantra years ago (2000) and was expecting a piece of crap and instead I was extremely impressed.

An independent rear suspension is of benefit when driving fast on a twisty road or on roads with poor surfaces. Only a motormouth would make such a big deal about the lack of same in a vehicle that most probably will not spend significant time doing either. Can someone explain me in layman terms what CVT and Dual Clutch transmission is? I looked it up but I don't get it at all.
@midsouthautoloans20878 жыл бұрын
+A Freethinker in laymans terms: A CVT transfers power from the engine to the wheels via a transmission that has no metal gears. Instead a CVT connects two pulleys by a belt (like a big rubber band) and is known for reliability problems and feels like the transmission is slipping. It is not a rubber band obviously it is made out of some synthetic rubber/flexible belt material.
@malikbrother80228 жыл бұрын
+A Freethinker CVT drives like train. It is computerized train transmission that drive like gear-less. It basically saves the rev for quick acceleration starter and save a lot of gas. Dual Clutch transmission drives like traditional gear and very reliable. CVT has been marred with controversies. Google people complaint about CVT experience. It is new and unreliable. Agreed! My parents were trying to get me the new 2018 hyundai elantra and I didn't want it. I told them I wanted the 2016. They didn't understand why I wanted the 2018 over an older version until they actually looked at the cars and then came to crashing epiphany how much better the 2011-16 is than the 2017-18

I think elantra looks much better looking than civic but civic's design is growing on me.

expect this car to receive a quick refresh just like the sonata; I don't think Hyundai expected the civic to be that improved especially the touring model. make a 5 door with 1.6 liter turbo, I'd buy it.

this car should have its sales confined to rental car agencies only. what a huge flop!

what if hyundai decide to build elantra N car
@johnschubarth20006 жыл бұрын
They finally got the design right. A quick refresh would be a mistake. Just to compete with a Civic. Not everyone is 20. Aspire to be more like a Genisis

Last year I bought a 2017 Elantra Limited ( it says it's Limited but it's missing some features that I doubt would have been opted out of) and traded in my 2018 Soul Ex+. The Elantra is nice but isn't comfortable for long drives and the Eco mode makes it feel very sluggish and doesn't help very much with fuel economy. I don't hate the car but I miss my Soul.

Looks nice, but I am thinking the Civic would still be the better overall choice, especially if engine/drivetrain is a priority for you. I am interested in seeing the new Civic SI, and the Elantra Sport whenever they come out. Then make a comparison of those two cars. I would also put the 2017 Kia Forte 5 sx in that mix.

I've never found Hyundai's leather particularly great. It feels like leatherette.
@LBJSONG8 жыл бұрын
+Jake Chapman isn't it all leatherette at this segment? unless you move to luxurybrand ?
@jacobchapman95258 жыл бұрын
Ryan Song Not at all. Most offer genuine leather.

The Elantra is actually more of a Corolla alternative than a Civic alternative. In Canada, the Civic has stronger resale values than the Corolla. Alternatively I would go for the Elantra GT or the Golf.

what a shame the civic and corolla went with CVT transmissions .
@stevefranklin80527 жыл бұрын
Marktuyet yes it will come back to bite them in the end, when people are going to be hit with 10.000 dollar replacement quotes. 2nd owners of cvt cars are going to be screwed. people don't buy used cvt cars ! these transmissions don't last like automatics, and cost almost 3 times as much to replace.

As for the ppl commenting about recalls on the civic atleased they recall them hyundai has tons of electronic problems with their fancy features and cause u to have them replaced at their terrible dealerships!

The rear doors of all Civics except the Touring model also have hard plastic. It looks like the soft plastic that's in the front but one touch will show how they even fooled you!
@Billy42028 жыл бұрын
+Steve W I own a Touring, they're hard plastic in the rear on all trims. Not a deal breaker to me.

+Dickerdoodles Not in the one that I drove . It was one of the first U.S. models delivered and maybe it has since been cheapened. Is yours a U.S. spec?
@Billy42028 жыл бұрын
Yep, mine is. Manufactured in Indiana, bought in Virginia a week before Christmas. You're talking about the upper portion of the rear doors, right? If so, sad that Honda cheapened out.
