not gonna lie, we had this car for a week as a rental, with the dct and it was a lot of fun, i actually took it to a back road and i was surprised how flat it was, honestly it corners really flat the issue is i find myself flooring the car just to pass someone on a regular road, not even on the highway....so i see it as a fun car but would be great to buy for your child who wants to race everywhere as their first car, because it stays flat and is easy to control, dual clutch transmission is great fun and its very low on power so you cant really go too fast with it
@nickL738910 жыл бұрын
Here is my take after about a year and a half of ownership: the car still feels tight and nimble, or chuckable a they stated. While power is a little underwhelming, and i do think the turbo would be nice, I can't argue with the efficiency (35mpg around town and as high as 45mpg on the highway, no joke). Mine is also a 6spd manual, throws are good, it could benefit from a heavier knob for some precision though. Almost every day since I've owned it people stop to ask questions about it. I paid $18k out the door brand new, a true bargain for what you get. Great car in my book and if you do 30k miles a year like I do, there aren't really any better choices out there.
@korman78 жыл бұрын
I've read that manual is the only way to go with this car, why is that? I can't drive manual but I'm wondering if it's worth it to learn for this car. I also drive in the city(Toronto), so I don't think a manual would be ideal. Please let me know your thoughts.
@nickL73898 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Korman The reason to buy this car with a manual is because it's slow. Manual transmissions give you a better sensation of speed even though you aren't going any faster. The Veloster is a commuter car in disguise. I eventually wanted something faster and went with a Fiesta ST, and just two weeks ago traded that in for a new Focus ST. Those are cars worth learning stick for, I would say not so much on the Veloster. If you enjoy the way the Veloster looks though, and want the fantastic mileage, it is a great car.
@nickL73898 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Korman Also, the DCT (automatic) isn't horrible in the Veloster. The slight hesitation off the line of the car getting into gear will be odd at first, but you would get used to it.

I test drove the Veloster and was impressed; it made me feel good to be in it. I am 6ft 195lb and it was one of the most comfortable I have been in power was the only slightest disappointment. At the end of the drive I got out and looked back. It felt like I was driving my son’s car and should give it back to him. I did not want to own it and still can't figure out why! Perhaps for me at 54 it just felt too young for me.

2:26 how is this aggressive?? I like the design of the veloster especially the big booty and the turbos front end looking better then the nav, but it isn't really "aggressive". The 24 N and nline sedan and the pre face-lift N/nline are more aggressive then the first gen velos, with the 24s looking even angrier. Even the veloster N dosen't have amount of aggressive styling that the N brand elantras/i30 sedans have. The veloster is more of lovable with some finding it's big booty or "bubble butt" making it more of "cute".

Just because its an everyday car doesnt mean that utility and economy are the only things that matter. Some people simply care way more about how fun the car is. My dailydriver is also my autocross car. For me, just driving around town is fun, and it wouldnt be if I didnt care about performance. I have an Speed3 with no back seat or sound proofing, performance springs/struts, race level sway bars (on stiffest setting), and a full strut brace/cage...I drive every day in Houston traffic with it.

We hope you saw the whole review to notice that the guys both gave this car high ratings. Our intention is for people to find cars which are fun to drive and affordable - plenty of boring cars are comfortable. This is a fun car, but we wouldn't be honest if we ignored it's lack of power. There would be no benefit in copying Top Gear. If/when we say something similar it is because the guys happen to have the same thought - like two different movie reviewers saying the same thing about a film.

Great point... except none of the technologies actually increase the driving involvement or enjoyment. It does include a lot of good features and MPG for the money, no question. However, we want people to remember and enjoy driving itself - so we focus more on those aspects of a car. Some cars with lots of features are simply terrible to drive... this one happens to be enjoyable, if underpowered.

About these guys going on about the car needing more power they are dead right. The car looks sporty and even the name Veloster is a play on the word Velocity and not delivering on the implied speed and power would be hugely dissapointing if you were not forewarned. So the review is spot on.They covered all the basics about comfort and how it feels to drive and its looks.More importantly they made sure you know its not a hot GTI,OPC,ST,RS beater despite it trying to look like one.

@MrGnarman11 жыл бұрын
understandable. i know it's not a hatch, but look into civics at all? if it has to be a hatch, subaru makes a few with good mileage. the subaru impreza makes 36 mpg, and I can attest to the fact that the impreza is a car anyone should love. awd, huge trunk (boot), and with 148 hp, it's enough to get you on your way, but not so much you'll get tickets every time you step on the gas.

So the moral of the story is that Hyundai build the N/A Veloster completely ready for a turbo transplant since the chassis is super rigid, the steering is super crisp, and the suspension is aggressively active. They wanted to make sure they had all these elements right before adding more power which would final piece to making this car a class leading competitor.
