I already thought you were a badass before, Jason, seeing you hit some of the stuff on Clone Hero was just insane to me, I can't really even do Hard mode on Clone Hero, let alone Expert, because I can't wrap my head around the hand movements for hitting the fifth note then moving back, it confuses my hands, so seeing you almost effortlessly hit insane charts while also reading and responding to chat and reacting to the meme charts or mash-ups was just out of this world to me. Now you have to literally hit it perfect instead of being able to rely on game mechanics that make it easier to hit those streaks? You're insane dude, keep it up
@JasonParadise

Thanks for the kind words! 🤘 If you want to try getting better at hard/expert, here's a quick tip that usually works. Try playing on Medium difficulty but keep your pointer finger on the red fret instead of green. Move your hand back to green only when you need to hit notes there. After you hit any green notes, move your pointer finger back to the red fret. If you can get this consistently, congratulations you can now play hard. Just add your pinky for orange 🙌

Glad you're enjoying YARG as well! Feel like the biggest problem this game has right now is just getting eyes on it. Explaining to folks features like anti-ghost mode is crucial. Accuracy and Anti-ghosting is something the Plastic Guitar games have been needing for a long time to get away from people just needing black-midi style charts for any difficulty. It adds such a huge dimension to rhythm games to get past just "hit or miss" and I don't know if YARG has it already but I'd love to see accuracy distinctions like "Perfects" and "Early" or "Late" to really help people hone their skills beyond an FC and add that new way to be competitive.

It feels smooth as hell! It's crazy to know I've messed up before seeing it reflected in game just by the feel alone. That same feeling never happened on Clone Hero. Instead it was the opposite of "How did I hit that? Shouldn't I have missed??" Never get that feeling on YARG.
@Thesnakerox
@Thesnakerox Жыл бұрын
I noticed this too! When talking about it in a 5 Fret community server, someone pointed out that YARG feeling smoother probably has to do with the fact that the polling rate is not tied to the framerate, as demonstrated in that clip of Alec playing at 4 FPS. Whereas if you cap Clone Hero's framerate at, for example, 120 FPS, your polling rate is going to be 120 Hz because CH's polling rate is tied to its framerate.

I think im preffering Yarg over Clone Hero. Its easier to distinct between tapping notes and normal notes, and the fact it has support for vocals alone makes it more fun than Clone Hero. Online Multiplayer cant come soon enough! Prayers to the devs, they have something special here :)

I've always been more of a Guitar Hero player than a Rock Band guy, but honestly I agree. The more time I've spent with YARG, the easier it has been to read patterns. Nice to know with the game being open source we'll see more graphic themes in the future too.

I mean, it makes sense. All those old meme charts getting as much traction as they did, then the mental health issues, the recent separation, etc. That's a lot to deal with, but I don't want to make excuses. Something I've always done is try explaining myself for context. Very ADHD thing. Although my intentions are good, quite a few people will see those explanations as excuses. Hell, even mentioning the YT algorithm thing in this video feels like an excuse now. While true, I feel like I need to keep making better things people want to see. Gotta keep pushing myself as well, it's the way forward. Kick that imposter syndrome to the curb 🤘

@@JasonParadise As someone who got their ADHD diagnosis well into their 30's: atta boy! Also, explaining yourself is a coping mechanism we learn from interacting with people whose brains stay much more on track, our logical jumps seem like derailments to them. So explaining *is* helpful for keeping people on the same train as you. Never apologize for who you are, ADHD does not mean you are "defective" as seen in several emergency response professions, where ADHD brains shine, as the situation finally develops at a speed that keeps it engaged. It's a descriptor of properties that are not readily visible like "blue-eyed", "muscular", "fast-running", are, but it *is* just a descriptor, not an error message.

I think a great idea for the future of YARG would be customizable anti-ghosting, like having it enabled for strummed notes, then selective for taps or hammer-ons/pull-offs. I mean, if the sequence is something like at 6:31ish (y,r,y,r,b,r,y,r) you could keep red pressed through the sequence and still have it count because it's a "fret" above. Idk, it's a cool idea for those who want the added challenge.

Something I’ve wanted GH/RB style games to do for a while is try out a multi-stage judgment system that grades your timing per note, like the judgment systems used by Bemani games like Beatmania, DDR and Gitadora. I think that would give people a nice middle ground that would still give people leniency to hit denser note patterns while still encouraging high accuracy play

At one point this was talked about for Fret Smasher, but I haven't heard any progress on that games development lately. Wouldn't say it's out of the question for YARG in the future with the open source nature of the game. Would be a lovely option to have

Are you afraid of ghosts? Try Anti-Ghost mode in YARG by downloading the game here: yarg.in/ Something I didn't mention in the video... take a look at the multiplier while someone is playing YARG. If their multiplier is BLUE, they are playing with Anti-Ghost which requires extreme accuracy. If the multiplier is ORANGE, Anti-Ghost is turned off and sloppier play is just fine. That's kinda neat that the devs snuck that in there. Hopefully we won't see that leading to people "bullying" for not-playing anti-ghost, and only calling people out on BS for ghosting while pretending they're not. Hopefully that makes sense, but if not, basically - Playing without anti-ghosting: This is fine, let them cook. Lying about it: Not okay, don't let them get away with it.

i think the biggest thing that sells YARG over clone hero for me is 1. open source very cool, but more importantly 2. with clone hero (and most other alternatives) you are pretty locked into the way the engine is made. YARG lets you play either one of the most precise engines u want, with anti ghosting, no infinite front end, and precision mode, OR if ur super casual then u can go the full other way and basically play on the clone hero engine, or anywhere in between. its not necessarily that yarg is more precise, its that its more versatile to ALLOW you to play more precise if you want to.

14:16 I think you and Austin of Shoddycast (formerly of Game Theory) should collab; you have a lot in common. ... I have to be honest, my inabilities due to various non-game issues render things like infinite front end basically pointless; having it or not makes no real difference on my end. That said, I see why it was coded; too many official charts with hopo notes that shouldn't be. ... Oh? You mean to inquire of my inabilities? I'll throw you a bone. I have depth perception issues. This makes things difficult when measuring from certain perspectives, and is more of an annoyance, or dire peril depending on the situation, but I don't see things in 3D the same way most others do. In fact, I'm better at rhythm games when played on a CRT type monitor, I kid not. (has no effect when playing vocals-I'm just good at vocals)

It may be harder but it's not realistic. On real guitar when you tap, You are holding down a string with your left pointer finger, tap with your right pointer finger, And the other digits on your left hand do the rest of the work. Not being able to hold down notes in advance... This changes you into a robot. You're playing like a robot would. If you're into that go for it.

Talking about this is tough because I don't want to downplay accomplishments people have on Clone Hero. Sure, a lot of those FCs would be physically impossible with a timing engine that isn't so loosey goosey. It's part of the reason that style of play never appealed to me. At the end of the day people have to do what they enjoy, this style is just my personal preference. It feels great to know I hit the notes without help from the game. I haven't played, but it sounds like it completely undoes the whole anchoring tutorial from every Guitar Hero game, where they explain you can hold a note as early as you like, so long as you strum at the correct time. You know, like an actual guitar functions. I'm interested to see how it works compared to classic Guitar Hero mechanics, but I am a fan of not 5 fret spamming solos like some top-tier players do. Still playing Clone Hero because I like the GH visuals over RB. Always hated the RB highway and gems.
@JasonParadise
@JasonParadise Жыл бұрын
You can still anchor! The limitation is you can't slide around on the frets and tap buttons you aren't supposed to be hitting. If you want to compare it to real guitar, imagine it like string noise before hittting the right note. You can tell when someone is playing sloppy versus really clean. YARG just makes it so "string noise" breaks your combo. Anchoring is still totally fine, that Dragonforce part would be absurd otherwise

After playing CH for so long I played RB2 relatively recently and I legit thought my guitar was broken lol. Correct me if I'm wrong, but GH3 had infinite frontend, right? Isn't CH just based off of GH3 but a bit more lenient on top of that? I think it makes the game play very smoothly and makes sense for solid notes, maybe not for hammer-ons as much. As a somewhat-actual guitarist it feels a bit more natural since you can hold down frets before strumming to make the note come out on a real guitar. With hammer-ons and tapping and the like though, yeah you do need to actually hit that perfectly. Wonder if some compromise could be made there with only solid notes having the infinite front-end. Thoughts?

Because if Anti-ghosting is applied to the whole game, that is, in my opinion, unbelievably stupid. "You literally have to tap the note and strum RIGHT when the note hits the line, otherwise you miss". Yes, I know it's just a game and not a real guitar, but it just feels idiotic because that's not how you play a real guitar. You can hold down a string BEFORE you have to play a note. But, when it comes to HOPOs and taps, Anti-Ghost feels to me more realistic because you're plucking/hitting the strings at the EXACT moment you need to, and there's very little leeway in that regard. Just a bit of a rant because I personally dislike the idea if it's the way it seemed to be presented.

My ONLY gripe with YARG is that sometimes when you have to play more hold notes mid hold note, it just cuts it off. Other than that, amazing engine.

Know exactly what you're talking about. Pretty sure they're working on that for the future. The alpha build has already fixed quite a few bugs. Next one I'm looking forward to is solo bonuses coming back. All worth it for this new engine thoooo 🤘

Soulless 4 on YARG when?
@alexdamonwrites
@alexdamonwrites Жыл бұрын
Does this feature mean that you can't put your fingers on frets to prepare for upcoming notes? And what about mindlessly tapping on frets during extensive pauses in songs, does that also break your combo?
@JasonParadise
@JasonParadise Жыл бұрын
You can still anchor notes. You can still mindlessly tap during long breaks. It's just hitting incorrect notes on the fretboard during a chain of hammer ons/pull offs that will break combo. Huge for players who love this style of classic gameplay

@@JasonParadise Great! I was worried because anchoring (that's what it's called, I totally forgot) is something I use quite often. And we all just tap away when we've got 20 seconds until the next note, don't we? I think it's time I get started on installing this game and seeing how quickly I can pick it up.

Just waiting on Guitar Hero graphics options to make the jump. I'm really liking everything YARG is implementing, but unfortunately, RB style notes are unreadable to me, idk why.

Same timing, believe it's either 140ms or 150ms. The only difference is the inability to be messy and ghost notes that aren't there

I remember I played almost all Guitar Hero games emulated on RPCS3 not so long ago, Aerosmith, WT, Metallica, Van Halen, 5, Warriors of Rock and even Band Hero, then went back to play Clone Hero, it felt DISGUSTING, it was like I was playing random notes and the songs were playing themselves, it was really bad, so after that I went to play only YARG and WTDE, I don't feel comfortable playing Clone Hero anymore, it lets you do whatever tf you want a little too much

i hate ghosting so hard, watching FCs of really hard songs only to see button spam during really hard parts just makes me click off the video. i would love to try this, however i have zero idea how to get the game and a 360 guitar setup on my PC to work with it
@JasonParadise

It's a free download. Website is yarg.in/ to get it. If you have a wired controller it'll be simply plug and play. If you have a wireless 360 controller you can get one of the wireless Xbox 360 adapters for PC. They sell for like $35 or so on Amazon 🤘

@JasonParadise Жыл бұрын
There's been quite a few meme mashups, but as for the classic meme style? Haven't seen anyone making things like that lately. Want to create a pipeline for people to submit memes/songs they'd like to see charted, have folks chart them up, and then I could play them after on streams. Still in the works setting that up

I personally dont like antighost. Its a gameplay nightmare in fast sections where you are allowed to strum early and get away with it, but god forbid you spam frets a frame or two too early. Some charts feel like bs with how tight the timing has to be on fast HOPOs and Taps sections. If its easier to strum a hard section than actually doing it the way the chart intended because the timing is unforgiving, then the sytem is wrong from the ground. At least in CH, the motion you do in those fast sections feels smooth and fun to play instead of having to feel like you need to hit frame perfect every single note because the X game engine is tied together with ductape. If you want a better solution I suggest looking at how other rhythm games do it by having an Accuracy score alongside Notes Hit. That way you can still FC something but keep improving on your accuracy without separating pros from casuals with a toggle in the settings. On a side note: The UI in YARG is a mess to navigate.

I've seen one community mod for circle notes so far. Last I checked there were already 69 (nice) different forks of the game on github. Bound to be some new features coming there eventually. One community member is working on a YARG mod that speeds a song up every time you hit a note 😅

its funny he sayd "the next console game will have tighter windows" hahaha. little does he know fortnite festival is not only gonna be tight, but you HAVE to make sure the fret is pressed before you strum, even if you miss a frame Thats why i am gonna learn yarg/emulate the old games instead of play CH. So i dont learn bat habits, and can REALLY express the skill i learn

It's not just "for the sake" of it. Pretty much every classic GH/RB had a timing window tighter than most people use nowadays with Clone Hero. Anti-ghost on YARG is a return to form for anyone who enjoyed playing the console games. As for stuff like soulless, how about for someone like me? I've never touched one of them. No interest at all. But on the other hand Anti-ghost on YARG reminds me of when I first fell in love with the games. The feel of knowing the game didn't give me credit is priceless
