Yes. Electromagnets are even easier to make stronger than permanent magnets. Furthermore, the video is missing the most relevant thing. This product is extremely insecure due to the topology of the system, even if the magnet-defeatable relay was replaced with a solid-state switching component, because this can always be broken apart and hot-wired to bypass the entire unit. To achieve any decent security, the outside-of-the-door unit which reads the face, key, code, or whatever person-identifying token, should never, ever directly control the power of the locking mechanism. There should be a separate unit for the mechanism power control, to be installed inside the locked premises, which either makes the decision of granting access while the outdoor-unit only reads the token (eg. face) and feeds the raw token data for it, or receives the access granting signal encryptedly if the decicion-making is carried out in the outdoor unit. By such proper topology, the lock could not be defeated by hotwiring the locking mechanism power - without having already being broken into the locked premises.

For those of you who like this device but don't like how easy it is to bypass, the solution is relatively simple. The HFD45-S relay they use is a very common 5V DPDT relay with contacts rated at 30VDC/2A or 125VAC/0.5A. But, you don't even need to remove this relay to mitigate the problem even though you won't actually be using it. As you view the relay in the upright position, the top left is the negative side of the coil and the top right is the positive side of the coil. It's clear from the PCB that they are sinking the negative side to ground when activating the relay. (common practice as it is easier to sink current than source current) If you're an electronics hobbyist, then already know that a single transistor will suffice to activate an off-board relay that is inaccessible to the perp or to directly power the door strike (again, easier to sink current for the strike). There's a caveat since the relay signal will actually be used to REMOVE power from the strike in this scenario, so keep that in mind. If you're not very tech savvy, then use another 5V relay wired in parallel to the original and use the COM and NC contacts to provide the FAIL-SAFE voltage to the electric door strike. Personally, I do not like systems that require constant power so they fail-safe when power is lost. That's just needless energy consumption and shortening the life of the strike even if it's rated for 100% duty-cycle. Since this is an electric door strike and not a magnetic lock, there is no need for it to fail-safe as the door will operate normally for egress from inside just as if you had a fixed strike plate; There is no way to get locked in. Do you really want your house, shop, etc. to unlock with power goes out? Also, if the control system stops working then the strike won't ever unlock with the request-to-exit button as shown. It is better practice to wire a local egress button that simply breaks the current path to the strike. This way, if the access control unit dies the door strike can still be de-energized. The down-side to this (not really) is that if you're looking at the history of access control, there is no record of the exit and the button must be held while opening the door. Most electric door strikes are fail-secure and most access control systems use a small SLA battery (7 to 11Ah) so that access is still available when the power goes out. Now, in this case the monitor and facial recognition device is going to be the thing that draws most of the power making the battery life much less than it could be with a normal card-reader system. You can see in this mock-up that there is a BATT input on the power supply just for this purpose. It will handle the charging of the battery. (battery size is limited by minimum charge current rating) With a magnetic lock, those are definitely 100% duty-cycle and they do not need to fail-safe if the aforementioned egress switch/button is used. As before, do you really want your doors to unlock when power is lost?

As an access control installer it was kind of cool to see this on this channel. Btw most strike style locks don't need an exit button, and they are fail secure which means if the power goes out the lock stays lock. This is because the doors used on these locks generally have a one way handle, it's always locked on the secure entry side and always unlocked on the exit side of the door.

Exactly. Push bars being the standard for security and ease of egress and safety. Even a person with no functional grip can easily lean against it and leave. The latching mechanism is simple and very effective. Like you, I also installed a lot of primary entrance and exit doors. A loss of power makes it slightly harder to get in, unless you have a key. A magnet has become the new all-access pass for pen testers and shoplifters but won't get you past a good mechanical "push bar to exit" door.

Instead of a solid-state relay or even a TTL circuit, I would rather see it send data back to the controller. Since it is just looking for a closer it wouldn't be that hard to just short the wires or sink to ground. Now you could use TTL with a floating ground to help mitigate that issue.
