To answer your question, yes! Percy did indeed modify the broom so it had a seat so Vex could shoot properly from it. It was one of many things Percy made for her, because he’s a big softy whose love language is explosive arrowheads.

Percy and Keyleth are my ultimate BrOTP! I'm really happy that some of that has come through in the series, if i have one complaint about TLOVM, it's that Percy and Keyleth's relationship was severely cut back from the campaign. Their conversations about leadership, morality, and legacy were some of the best moments second only to the times when they were absolute idiots together, indulging in silly shenanigans. Vox Machina has three pairs of siblings: Vex and Vax, Pike and Grog, and Keyleth and Percy. No one can convince me otherwise.

10:49 Yeah, so The Everlight is Serenrae, The Matron of Ravens is The Raven Queen, The Stormlord is Kord, Half-Giants are Goliaths, and there are some others I won't spoil. Basically, since Critical Role was a DnD campaign, it used DnD's gods and races. As they got bigger, looked to expand to new projects, and (I believe) partly due to a debacle of a rights change called the OGL which caused a lot of chaos when DnD's publisher attempted to implement it, they decided that it was better to start phasing out the DnD terminology, and replacing them with their own. I'm pretty sure they had fully replaced all the old names by the time campaign 2 started, which gave them a hell of a lot more freedom with what they could use them for without copyright infringement.
@andrewmcmillan2293 ай бұрын
I don’t think the OGL had as much of an impact as you are implying. They change the names in the show because they have to, but they still use D&D copyright stuff in the main campaign and I doubt that’s changing. Obviously they use all of the official subclasses, spells, feats, and monsters. But even with the Gods they have name dropped Asmodeus very recently and that’s a D&D god
@Brainth_17802 ай бұрын
@@andrewmcmillan229 Asmodeus is a biblical name, so it can't be copyrighted. Everything being phased out is DnD or Pathfinder original. I believe they changed the god's names in the Campaign as well, didn't they?

Yes, in the campaign Percy did customize Vex's broom for her. He also regularly made her a number of specialty arrows (explosive, etc). I think the reason they didn't modify the broom in the animated show, is that riding a flying broom is such a common trope in fiction that you don't really need to take precious animation time out explaining or otherwise messing with it. The audience can just take it for granted that she's fine.

Loving the reactions! Keep up the good work! Can't wait for season 3 and your reactions! For the question about the dragons, Red Dragons are technically the most powerful out of those shown in the show in D&D 5e (what the D&D campaign for Critical Role is based in). Traditionally, the dragons all have different temperaments that are associated with their color. Disclaimer, their strengths aren't totally definitive, as one may be able to best another on a good day with good circumstances. I listed them in the order of their strength in D&D 5e, the exception being Brimscythe, as he wasn't an ancient dragon afaik. Blue dragons would actually rank right behind Red in strength. Red (Thordak) - Fire - Greedy Green (Raishan) - Poison - Secretive/Scheming Black (Umbracyl) - Acid - Extremely cruel White (Vorugal) - Ice - Predative/primal and love the challenge for the hunt. Blue (Brimscythe) - Lightning - Vain and Territorial Another disclaimer, Critical Role runs a homebrew setting and campaign, meaning that it's not officially made by the D&D's creators, and created for the most part by Matt Mercer. So things can be very different and break the mold from stuff from traditional stuff, and the show is even different from their game it's based on. So take this with a grain of salt Hope this helped!

Some beautiful foreshadowing that I love to point out: In season one Vax is given a coin by a child who dies in his arms (very pay-the-ferryman), who he vows to get justice for, only to become an oath of vengeance paladin for the goddess of death (recklessly drawn to his destiny indeed) Twice this season, Scanlan changed his mind about running from a threat when he saw children. First with the two orphans in Whitestone, then again with the kitten child in Westrun (the paternal instincts are kicking in)

In the sunken tomb, you’ll notice Vex does actually check for traps before Percy opens it - she just ‘rolls low’ and doesn’t find it. So in a way, Percy was trusting her ability when he reached in to the armor. They were both wrong to do it without ‘the Rogue’ checking it out since it’s his speciality, but in a supportive way.

Yes. I think Percy does worry about Orthax returning. For one thing, fiends are really hard to kill on the material plane (I think that's a D&D thing). In the campaign, Percy talks a few times about his worry about his inner darkness, and his need to guard against his darker thoughts. I think that's part of his intelligence. He's able to imagine scenarios that others might not, and being able to imagine them, can imagine himself actively doing them. I do like your idea of Scanlan and Grog just running into Ana Ripley and killing her. We can all dream.

Finally got to watch, I'm so delighted to have found your reactions. It truly is a delight to watch someone else fall in love with these characters who I've loved for so long (and also one of my favorite ships of all time). Also, didn't want to say it at the time, BUT YOU TOTALLY CALLED IT ON THE SUS KID. Raishan totally followed them through the tree!! You can see in episode 1 when they confront Raishan and then run off that she visibly decides to let them go. Making the decision even then that these people might have a chance to take down Thordak. I love how much of a dweeb (affectionate) Percy is in this season. Obviously he's still got things that he's dealing with and all of that trauma doesn't really go away, but he's in a place where he can monologue to a room full of half-giants about how cool his trap is. Also even though she is THE WORST I do enjoy Ripley as a dark mirror to Percy, a reflection of the path that he might have taken had he given into the darkest parts of himself. "I like my men a little bit pathetic" is the Perc'ahlia vibe. Very "me and the bad bitch I pulled by being autistic" energy. That and the battle couple moments in these episodes were SO SO GOOD. Also, I love how Vex and Vax have this arc where they're not exactly growing apart, but they're more growing into their own people. It's not that they love each other any less or are any less close, but they go from this incredibly enmeshed start ("Vex and Vax only care about each other") that comes from their own trauma growing up, and are slowly starting to find paths that are just their own and not together. That said Vex getting pissed that Vax gets wings is SUCH excellent sibling energy. The moment when Vax fully accepts the Matron of Ravens and takes his leap of faith is so well done. "I am in your hands and I am no longer afraid"-- he spent the entire season afraid of this new purpose, of this bargain that he plunged into without thinking it through. One of the campaign moments I'm sad they cut for time is Vax right before the dragons attack questioning what the fuck they're all doing as a group, they've taken back Whitestone they've got a Keep and now they're just rootless. It was a moment that happened literally JUST before the dragon's attacked, and I remember Matt saying later that he was thinking "just give me thirty minutes". From going from "what the fuck are we even doing?" to suddenly being responsible for these dragons and this new destiny in the course of a few days. This has gotten long, so onto season 3! While I would love to see you react to the trailer, I am going to recommend against watching it-- just because there's a major out of context spoiler in there that I THINK you will end up calling from the context clues. But also would love to have you watch some table to screen and some campaign moments!!

Congrats on finishing the binge. When I first got into CritRole I tried to do the same with campaign 1, because I came into it just a couple months before the finale episode, and then wound up in a rush to finish it so I could watch the start of campaign 2 live. (Sadly, I fell short). The moments with Percy and Grog are some of my favorites, and I really wish more of them could have made it into the show. It's so cute that Grog can act as a translator with the Herd, because it shows that he knows Percy well enough to know he doesn't have to try and follow what Percy is saying, he just has to listen for the part that *he* needs to understand. (And there's a specific exchange I'd love to see show up next season, but I won't be surprised if it doesn't.)

A bit of a side note, her sword is actually in place of an item they had in game called and immovable rod that would stay in place and nothing could move it. Another comment, sorry. I share your love that Percy was able to show his nerdy side in this second season. He always had that in the campaign, but there wasn't really room to show it in the first animated season. But I love to imagine him pre-Briarwoods, rattling around his parents' castle, taking advantage of a library that had been accumulating books for centuries, and dreaming about adventures in the Fey Realm.

Not a criticism of Percy, he does need to know his audience though :) He is such a little nerd, but the Horde was definitely never going to fully understand his plan. I love his enthusiasm though.

I was watching and wondering if your opinions of the group has changed since before you had read the comics and now have more context. Thanks for the great review!
@kyratries3 ай бұрын
Oh definitely changed! While core characteristics of the characters are the same, there is a certain levity in the show I don’t pick up on as much in the comics, making the whole group feel more familial, but that also makes sense because they’ve been together longer now. And of course, the characters do have arcs within the comics, so even where they are now doesn’t match up with where they started the show from, combined with needing to make the show accessible to viewers who hadn’t even heard of Critical Role…there’s a lot of difference! I have thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed the character arcs in the show so I’m probably more likely to rewatch some favorite episodes than reread the comics, but I’m glad to have both to have a comparison!

the Matron isn't being entirely forthcoming - he's more there to stop others from interfering with the transition from life to death - not so much the shepherd that watches over the flock but the hunter who stalks those that seek to prey upon it. It's a role more suited for an assassin rogue anyway, going off and killing necromancers and potential liches who might try to harvest the souls of the dying before they can reach their final destination. Vex's reaction to the wings was actually more muted here than in the campaign. Vex was obsessed with flying, and she originally had the Deathwalker's Ward (since she'd died for it), but she gave the armor to her brother. Laura went on for about 2 1/2 minutes grumbling about those wing. I think of them showing Kamaljiori's head, and I think they meant to have Scanlan walk back, see that, and find his nerve to go reclaim Mythcarver, but may not have had the time or budget to fully realize it.

Is it Thursday, Oct 3 yet? And my take on Osyssa's comment about 'nobody cares about you, I'm no different' is not that it was in any way, shape, or form the actual truth. It's what he most fears and sort of believes to be true and hides under all the insincerity and horniness. Just also a thing about always playing class clown and acting like there's not really a care in one's world is that one can't expect other people to realize they've got problems under the exterior unless THEY become willing to bring it up finally with someone, or are surrounded by mind readers. Re: the broom, yes, Percy makes a seat for the broom. But as far as I figure it would be a pain in the butt for the animators. And Regarding what the Matron wants with Vax as I understand it, ignore from here on if you would consider it a spoiler- Vax is not meant to be a psychopomp himself, as champion he is to move against those who would try to cheat fate. Resurection doesn't really count so much, because it's just sort of extending fate, but stuff like UNdeath is the middle finger to the Matron and the smooth moving of the cycle of fates. So in the course of whatever else he does, he's to fight those who try to mess with the idea of death and the passage of the soul to their new home & purpose. I am not sure how also massive kill events/villains count towards this such as the Conclave destroying all of Emon, or things that may lead to another Cataclysm, but there MIGHT be a little bit of 'yes keep fighting and preventing that stuff too'.

To your point, if there is anyone who is trying to watch the series through your videos, Amazon Prime's channel on KZbin is showing both seasons of TLoVM for free until October 3rd (which is when the next season releases).

Regarding "the Hope Devourer", each of the dragons has a title. Thordak the Cinder King Vorugal the Frigid Doom Raishan the Diseased Deceiver And Umbrasyl the Hope Devourer. At the table, they joked about "it's a hyphenated last name. The maiden name was just Umbrasyl the Hope, but then she got married and ruined everything"

recomendation for a video: there are compilations comparing the scenes of the show with the original part in the campaing, i would love to see you react to the cast when scenes like Vax confessing to keyleth for the first time or Vex´s death, i know you will absolutely see when Talison(Percy) shup up the twins father by making Vex a Lady of Whitestone. they are on the internet and i think you can look them with out worry for spoiler, or you can do it after the third season to be sure

Percy was always a fan favorite. The interesting thing about him is how he really is, in a lot of ways, a pretty terrible person. No one being quicker to say so than Percy himself (or rather, Taliesin, the person who created and plays him.) However Percy is also intelligent enough and self aware enough to recognize that about himself and he actually wants to be a good person. The show kinda downplays how machiavellian Percy can be, how quick to justify any ends if they achieve his means, so that dynamic is a little more muted so far. But I always loved that aspect of him in the campaign. An amoral person whose natural instincts and first response to situations are frequently coldly calculated and callous but who nonetheless aspires to be better than those instincts.

I adore characters who carry darkness, whether it’s a product of circumstance or something they were born into, but consciously struggle against it while at the same time…sometimes darkness is useful. I think from my perspective, Percy has the instinct to be terrible, but overrides it, making his achievements of doing good things almost more commendable since his first ideas will almost always have that darkness in them. It’s the Id, the Ego, and the Superego, right? But if I’m going off that model, then Percy is not a terrible person, but has violent desires against the world and his problems that he forces to either cave or become something useful (like a new weapon) and the result is someone not acting off monkey-brain impulses but understands the nature of his Id and how carefully he must watch himself, because he’s also aware of how clever he is, and a clever person who gives unto the violent desires is another Anna Ripley.

@kyratries If I'm remembering this correctly, there is a great bit during the cast watch parties for season 1 (good between season viewing) where Mica Burton - the host and huge Percy fangirl - says how much she loves him as a character, and Taliesin has his typical response of 'but he's so awful' only to have Laura (Vex) not disagree exactly but say that 'yes, but he's also full of love really' which Tal then grudgingly agreed with.

In Dungeons and Dragons, Red Dragons (fire breathing - almost always evil in nature) are the Chromatic Dragons that have the potential to be the largest, strongest and most magically endowed among evil dragon kind. And Thordak has an advantage even other reds dont have, which has been hinted at in the show. So it's both inherent to his species AND his backstory.

“There’s no such thing as luck.” Is a very ironic line coming from Vax as the player used the Lucky feat numerous times to reroll in the actual play. :)🍀 I saw a super cut in another reactor’s show about easter eggs. Soooo many Lucky features rerolls.

One more comment (sorry, sorry...). You asked for possible moments from the campaign to watch, so I made a list that covers some highlights from Vox Machina's trip to the Fey Wild (as they were calling it back then.). It was quite a long visit, covering more than 5 episodes, so I'm only suggesting you look at these moments. If you want to watch more, that's up to you. And, of course, you aren't obligated to look at all these moments, or any of them. It's just if you want to. Also, I'm only giving suggested end points, because I think it's up to you how long you want to watch any specific scene. For the most part, I think you should continue watching until you feel like you've seen enough. Episode 59. The Fey Wild kzbin.info/www/bejne/opDNqICpfttkpcUsi=8hhnzwN19SpIXqU- 9:40. Entering the Fey Wild. This has very litttle to do with the show, but it shows the party's first experience in the Fey Wild. It's pretty fun. 1:13:37. Vex talks to Trinket. I'm including this because of when Vex talks to Trinket in the show. It's very different, but I think this was the genesis of that moment. 1:27:05. Garmelie. This is how the party meets Garmelie. 2:26:50. Percy and Vex talk. This is the conversation in which Vex asks Percy if she looks like she "comes from money."

Episode 60 Hats and Heredity kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZyXi4pvmLOopsUsi=RWRhETW2xS0u2U9z 53:30 Percy gives Vex her title. Keep watching for about ten minutes, because it’s very fun and there’s a bit where Vex asks Percy if her title is real or not. Episode 61 Denizens of the Moonbrush kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3zEppWLYtGeZpYsi=w7iqNJGtdIk8gTFT 2:33:50. Encounter with the Pixies. Nothing to do with the show, but I’m including this if you are curious about how that went. Episode 63. The Echo Tree 159: Saundor. In the campaign, Vex doesn’t enter the tree alone. The entire party is there as Saundor appears within the Echo Tree. Episode 64. The Frigid Doom kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6KtlXupncunqNUsi=_GycAqLPQLpIL9lg 4:33. Vox Machina returns from the Fey Wild. It’s worth watching until about 21:00, because it’s a fun scene. *Don’t watch any further,* because there are some events in this episode that may or may not make it into Season 3. And *do NOT* read any comments on this video.

1)While Grog could have literally died, as PIke could have cast Revivify on him to bring him back to life. But it's likely that is more of a metaphor. And that she healed him before he could literally die. 2)In the campaign, Scanlan and Vax teleported inside the dragon's innards. Instead of flying up the backside. 3 Yes Thordak can reproduce asexually, Gold-sexually? Something like that.

The sphinxes were Osyssa (so CLOSE to Odessa) and Kamaljiori. Has anyone told Osyssa that her bo got killed by a black dragon while trying to save Scanlan Shorthalt's life? I'd imagine she'd have some -feels-. Those two need a fix-it fic, I swear.

10:00 your thoughts on the Everlight having a hand in Grog’s backstory is such good insight! And it’s a connection I’ve never realised (having seen the campaign and this series countless times) - she is the god of (amongst other things) redemption/forgiveness/second chances! Through Pike she gave Grog his.
