A modern real-life city approach would be neat. Basically replace the current 'arteries' with bike + ped lanes, the 'inner city highways' with normal dense roads, and the suburban areas with ped only. That way you still have long distance travel. Surprised there isn't a mod that straight up prioritized ped & bike above car unless distance is more than, say, 10 kilometers (which is about the limit of what a normal person can comfortably do by bike), and also throws in some randomization with people that don't own a car or don't own a bike.

I tried getting rid of trucks by using IT clusters and 0 industry areas in my pedestrian zones. Turns out, if you zone in too much IT clusters inside pedestrian areas, they start sending out trucks from the cargo service area to export goods. This P&P DLC can make your generic industry remotely produce goods like IT clusters, and make IT clusters send out trucks. Bonkers

@@davyf33 They function both as office zones and provide goods for commercial areas without sending out delivery trucks. How that works, I have no idea. Normally when you zone in too many IT clusters, they start complaining about not having enough buyers. Since they don't send out delivery trucks, IT clusters can't export their goods and they complain until the building gets abandoned. This new DLC seems to bypass that weakness and lets IT clusters send out trucks from cargo points.

I assume it's an oversight in design, since the IT clusters presumably transfer their goods directly to the "zone" as a whole and the zone has too many goods, so it starts shipping them out. That is a fun one to think about. my next zone in my current city was going to be the IT one...

or at least have logistic drones riding among the people. Maybe an idea for a future pack: pedestrian industry road, that has a dedicated lane for electric delivery vehicles alongside a wide pedestrian lane. What's still missing for sure, is a pedestrian street with bike lanes. And since we're implementing modern roads: "bike streets", where cars and up have to yield to all slower traffic (incl. crossing) and not overtake bicycles. Those are popping up everywhere, including in industrial zones to stimulate people to ride a bike to work instead of swamping the road with commuter cars hindering the truck traffic. They definitely have a lot of potential growth ahead :))

Fun episode! I agree with you that they should have solved the industry part differently. As this is just unrealistic, when it comes to industry. Also; there should be some kind of distance thing in the pedestrian zones. If there's 30 kilometers to walk, from the entry point to the pedestrian zone, obviously people would complain. So maybe it could work a bit similar to the child health care center, that the entry points have an area of effect? And that you can expand those by putting buses, trams or subways in the area? Could you make a 81 tile area, pack it with pedestrian zones, and have an entry point in the lower left corner, and have people walk home? LOL. It's fascinating how the creators of the game "train" the rest of the world to live like Scandinavians, as many of the things you are rewarded for, are the way we live - or at least try to live - in Norway, Denmark and Sweden.

You'd basically be going at walking pace down a lot of streets. I think what you should do is make 1 pedestrian zone for everything, with the service points on one road. Because it is one zone than all the goods get transferred in house from industry to commercial, instead of having trucks transfer from one industrial pedestrian area service point to another commercial pedestrian area service point. Therefore the trucks in the one service pedestrian zone are used exclusively to ship goods in or out of the city. And if you hook a cargo train station near that service point, the trucks have even less travel route, it would just be to the train station and back to service point. And maybe if you use IT office buildings to get commercial goods, you could remove industrial zones all together. No pollution or traffic, and employ everyone in offices.

I was really hoping Cities Skylines would expand their road selections for console players more than what they did for Plazas and Promenades. For instance, a "Michigan Left". If you don't know, it's a special left hand turn system that can only be found in Michigan. Instead of traffic moving through the intersection to turn left onto another road, you make a right turn then go down to a two lane off ramp in the median which allows you to pull a u-turn onto the road you need to be on. Just look up a diagram of it. It seems stupid but it works extremely well. Idk if someone in the modding community has made a "Michigan Left" road, but as Michigan resident, it would really make my day. Maybe a design you can look into at some point Biffa? I think you'd really like it for an American build.

Merging the two pedestrian zones would probably solve partially the traffic near the roundabout. Also, someth8ng I would try is putting an intercity bus terminal at the entry of the city and connect it to the pedestrian zone only by walk way. Now people can only enter the city by getting their car is their pocket or taking intercity bus, problem to solve is now goods. Put a cargo rail station next to the service building. With the merge of the two P. Areas, only import and export needs to go through service area so that could probably be managed by trains. That would mean a city where goods can only enter by train and people only by bus (except pocket car)

So... I built the city with a few zones and dropped the Service next door to the industry area and the Garbage points off near the dump. Is it realistic? Not in the slightest. Does it work mechanically? Sure does. It still baffles me that the Industries buildings will continue to produce without access to the city's population for a workforce - and that the trick explained above will work without the need to have any physical transportation between the PedZone supporting buildings and the PedZone they service.

Could you build a custom pocket car to bus transfer hub? If you had 5 bus lines terminating in that hub, 3 lines covering roughly a third of the residential/commercial part of the city each and 2 lines covering half of the industrial area each - each line would have its own bus bay and roads for incoming and outgoing pocket cars would be provided so that they spawn and despawn close to their bus bay ... In order to not overwhelm the hub with internal demand, you might add a bidirectional loop bus between the two areas, going via two bus-only roads, added somewhere 26:30 between your current paths and power lines.

What kind of maintenance are they doing on those roads? Foot traffic doesn't do nearly the damage as car traffic. My thoughts on a pedestrian zone: a port/freight rail yard where goods come in and go to the new buildings. Also higher density buildings and realistic population mod, to emulate older building styles. Think 3-4 floor high streets, Terraced housing, etc. A mod to half the cost of the pedestrian zone would also be welcome 😂

Don't worry Biffa, Paradox will realise they've introduced a loophole and patch in rules for pedestrian congestion!

If you had an intercity bus terminal or railway station, would any people moving into the city arrive by bus/train, or would they still come by car?

4:04 Why do you think they're loving it? They're forced to walk so they do but I can't see "We Love The Mayor" bubbles popping up.

you know traffic has been an enormous problem since idk 1960 maybe earlier but this could pretty much fix what big cities are crying out for TRAFFIC, this could Potentially be the future of the cities.

It's weird that the game mechanics have changed so much even without a pedestrian area.
@CM-cr8wq2 жыл бұрын
While goods can be teleported IN to a ped area, I don't think they can be teleported OUT... All those "Not enough buyers" warnings could be an indication of this. If true, then zoning generic industry zones in a ped area would not be a good idea, because they will eventually be abandoned, as they have no means to sell the goods they produced.

Funny experiment. Bit of a shame the new pedestrian mechanic can be 'abused' like this though as the goods teleport rather than using vehicles.

Biffa you need to build the disaster response building so its helicopters can get to your buildings that have burnt down.

So like, what would happen if the industry and commercial were just in the same area? Does that game spawn a truck to go in a loop or just teleport goods straight into the commercial zones?
