I think the game was "transferring ownership" of the fireballs to Mario, like it did to the canon.

I thought that it was just because the fireballs were using the same mechanics as hammers, except with a different firing arc, so most of the bizarro deaths were due to the fireball's animation not lining up with the hammer's already notorious hitbox. Didn't know that "transferable hammers" was thing though.

Yeah, most of the times where he died when he was jumping above the screen, were because of a screen wrapping enemy falling off the screen below. Something very easy to see in hindsight, but hard to avoid in the moment.

The Fire Bro's fireball came out of the cannnon on the same frame as the bullet bill shot out so it is mostly a 50/50 shot of which one it comes out of.

This is so fascinating, thank you for uploading this to youtube :) What I would personally love to see, is the full run of each section when you manage to beat it. That way I could get full context on how much strategy (and luck) is in there. At times there are some pieces missing - for example it was interesting to see you on top of the level all of a sudden when the Firebro shot in rhythm to the music, when we technically had no context of how you did that Overall, quite a nice watch though ^^

Based on what I know of similar things that can happen in Mario 64 (shout out to Pannenkoek2012), I'm assuming that the fire bro despawned the same frame it shooting a new fireball and also the aame frame a bullet bill appeared, which would probably have transferred ownership of the fireball to the bullet bill before initializing it's location.
