My 2001 LR2 Land Rover has 276,000 miles on it and still runs like a top! Might have done a 5.3 LS along with a t-56 trans swap at 110,000 miles. Might have gotten rid of the air ride and put 4" lift springs on it. Might have gotten rid of the hydraulic system, the diffs and transfer case, but it's still an LR2 on paper! The key to having a reliable Land Rover is to replace anything that Land Rover installed outside of the cab!

The problem is that Rangies are a 1950s vehicle with a 1970s body, built on the cheap with a bunch of design corners cut and a lot of poorly designed electronics slapped on top (from the cheapest supplier) from a manufacturer with only a passing acquiaintance in quality control and iterative design (ie: driving it until it breaks then working out what broke and fixing that in the design - Rover worked on the basis that if it went 10-15,000 miles it was ok for production They've ALWAYS been shitboxes. As a kid in the 1970s I was living in New Zealand high country and every single farmers who had one traded the things for FJ55 Landcruiser station wagons (farm landrovers got replaced with SWB FJ40 landcruisers for the same reason - if you had a landrover you needed to have 3 in order to ensure one was working at any given time) It's POSSIBLE to make a reliable Range Rover. It entails stripping the thing down to bare metal, redoing everything and replacing the OEM parts with much better quality items. It's NOT possible to make a reliable landrover as critical parts of the design are deficient Incidentally, a standard repair for government (ministerial) Jaguars was to replace the engines with an american smallblock V8. It was the only way to get a reliable one. They ended up all being replaced with Australian Ford Fairlanes In both Australia and New Zealand, when Toyota landcruisers became available Landrover/Rangerover went from 98% of the 4WD market to under 2% in less than 18 months

I bought a range rover at an auction. I had to replace the breaks, rotors and alternator. I took it to the shop to see what else was wrong. They told me I needed about $8000 worth of work plus a new transmission. I change all fuses, including the relays. The trans was off by a mere .01 seconds when the rover tech ran a diag. So I didnt replace the trans. That was 2 years ago. Replacing the fuses saved me thousands in supposed repairs. Ive had no problem since.

Best way with ABS is to open bleeder valve and then push pistons back. Debris will empty out the bleeder and not go back up into the ABS valve body. Otherwise great risk of causing one of the ABS isolation valves to stick open, keeping brake lightly applied to affected wheel all the time. Seen it hundreds of times and gets expensive real fast when having to replace entire ABS hydro unit.
@lyleg.91922 жыл бұрын
Exactly you don't want to just force that nasty stuff that's down close to the caliper piston to spend scraping back and forth on that steel collecting dirt and bits of metal and rust because brake fluid is hydroscopic so between driving in the rain and condensation Cycles there's going to be a little bit of water in there and you'll just force all that back up the line and if you do it enough through components that it could affect its performance or operation and if you're reading this and you kind of done that already it's not too late maybe to fill up the reservoir to the top pump the pedal have someone go around each bleeder several times you may have to feel the reservoir four or five times but just do it a whole bunch with the engine on with the engine off until it's really clean and you feel confident that you reversed the backflow that you introduced into the system back out through the bleeders and out of the system completely

@brianb35722 жыл бұрын
While not too prevalent, this is actually a known issue with some of the earlier JLR 5.0 engine where the injectors will fail and when one goes, the ECM will over pressure the other injectors in the same bank. I had this happen a few years ago with a 2011 XKR with the same engine. FCP Euro sells the OEM Bosch fuel injectors as a kit; 8 injectors for nearly the same price that the dealer charges for a single injector. Due to how much you need to take apart on the engine, I'd recommend replacing all of the injectors and do the supercharger service (oil and spring loaded supercharger coupler which is known to fail) while you have it all apart.

I've had a disco 3 highest trim level 50K all service records doctor owned and didn't get to keep it too long because a friend of mine wanted it so bad I didn't get to get to the hate part I only had the love part of the relationship so I guess that's all right. I'm slightly knowledgeable I guess you can say with the the Mechanicals and electricals with all the Jaguars I own and have owned as well as my tr8 convertible with the Rover 3.5 L V8 with a offenheiser intake and Holley four-barrel. Because you're not the usual person commenting after the fact such as high miles or some missed preventive maintenance and then the person has an engine issue such as head gaskets and losing coolant. So with that in mind perhaps you would like to be proactive and let me know how it goes over the years but if your vehicle is at 65 or $70,000 miles do some research and if you want some input I'll be happy to give it to you but you should run across some different cooling system sealers that use different ingredients that will coat the inside of your cooling system including that little edge of your head gasket your heater core your radiator your plastic cooling components with basically Metalized and fibrous coating that creates a bond and a layer and if you did have a pinhole leak somewhere what have you it closes them off permanently. So the point is is that if you add this to the system and there's two kinds there's the kinds that works with antifreeze and then there's the kind you have to drain everything out do a little flush add their elixir and then you run it for the recommended time and mileage and then you only have water with it then you flush all that out and then just top back up with your 50/50 mixed as it would have came from the factory and personally I recommend the prior version because it's easier sublimate, effective and efficient the primarily because you're not losing the coolant that you have in there you're not having to spend time doing the other steps plus you leave it in there so that means that little bits of it can continually work Beyond the initial process. And then when you have passed another couple of years or 20,000 miles of driving then add the same stuff unless something is recommended or comes on the market that is better and do the process again I just do that every 2 years or 20,000 miles and see if those little Coatings you can continually add keeps what would have been eaten away from happening thereby making your engine almost Bulletproof outside of some other calamity like a timing chain issue or something we won't get into that right now the better is something you'll want to check or have checked at around 100k to confirm that all your tensioners and guides are good and there's no stretch on the chain or wear. I think if you maintain a proper timing setup and the proactive head gasket repair cooling system repair coatings you'll get over 200 probably even $250,000 MI on the vehicle without the usual headaches from now until that milestone sorry this is a long and I'm just talking so there's not a lot of commas and periods inserted

Another great video! Just as a note on that your generic brake piston tool...if you pause at 4:39, you can see the plate that pushes against the outside of the caliper from inside is upside down. The outer radius curve should be turned 180 degrees so it's toward the outside of the rotor arc (you have the curved area toward the inside). Turning that would allow the tool more room to be centered on the piston. I use this tool often and remember this happening to me when I first got it...until I realized the plate was positioned incorrectly. Anyway, looks like you got the piston compressed in the end so all is good.

I've owned Range Rovers for 10 years now with a total of 600,000 km on the clock, and I've only had one air-strut failure in that time. I've had more rusted out coil springs go out on previous vehicles I've owned. Additionally, you completely ruin the handling of the car by doing the conversion, both on road handling and especially off-road, since the air suspension is simulating a beam axle, which you lose, after a conversion. It's not complicated either. There is one control computer, which isn't especially expensive, there are two valve blocks. Not very expensive either, then there are the air lines, the compressor and struts front and bags rear. The front struts are, sort-of expensive. About $400 apiece, but they are dead simple to replace compared to a coil spring. 20 minute job, compared to a 2 hour job.

Always aproblem to solvewith a R/R, but cutting corners is the usually problem. I did nor see the gears being cycled when the gerabox was being filled, hence the fault codes. If the supercharger drive has sheared, then the engine will overfuel when starting. Its also worth doing a supercharger overhaul at high mileage. New injectors might be in order. Its a Ford engine by the way, not BMW.

@marcoserbach38482 жыл бұрын
Exactly! People thinks "lifetime" means the owner lifetime 😂
@bobmcl24062 жыл бұрын
In most cases, "lifetime" means the lifetime of the warranty. Manufacturers don't give a toss if the car fails catastrophically after the warranty is up. They just want to be able to brag about low maintenance costs.

Welcome to the hell of Range Rovers. Mine has travelled further on a flatbed than I’ve actually driven it. It’s now sitting with its third Land Rover specialist (in Wales) waiting to see if they can figure it out. Out of commission for six months at this point. One of the main problems is that throwing parts at it to solve scanner-suggested problems is an extremely expensive solution. And even if you get the drivetrain sorted, the number of other potential bank account depleting issues (suspension, for example) is seemingly endless. As others have said, these vehicles seem so attractive… but unless you have your own fully equipped garage and endless time, knowledge, and money, just run away. Run away. If you ever waiver in your decision to not buy one, just watch these sorts of videos.

In the UK people who buy Range Rovers live in pristine villages or wealthy suburbs and use them for driving the kids to school and doing the shopping. They are generally discarded after a couple of years in favour of a new one. As soon as they are put into heavy use they go pop.

Sam, what year is that RR? I am looking at buying that code reader, the one I just bought doesn't have all the features that yours shows, for BMW and RR. I did notice that you had a low battery warning, which these are very sensitive since there's so much electronics on them. I just bought two '16 Models with the TD6 diesel. These vehicles are amazing.! I've think a lot of people are afraid of them because of bad press. When looking at the '2000 - 2013 models, they typically have 150k -200k miles on them, so don't be afraid to get them. I did a full service myself on both of these units. All in all, with Brembo Rotors, Ceramic pads, all new oils (trans, diffs (front/rear), transfer case, engine and filter), fuel filter (VERY IMPORTANT and easy to replace), I spent about $750 for a full service doing it all myself. As Sam says, these are the easiest and well thought out brakes I have ever worked on. There does seem to be a common problem with the boots on the front shafts that tear and the control arms ($90 each from Rock). Other than that, very impressed with RR units. I'm averaging 32 mpg with these TD6 models. The TD6 engine very reliable and was a Ford/Pugeot Industrial joint venture. The only real problem is the timing belt service kit, can get from Aliexpress for under $200 shipped, which needs to be done at 115k miles. Plenty of vids out there on how to do it yourself. The Transmissions are very reliable also, ZF8 series and ARE NOT truly life time fluid units, per ZF service instructions.
