That's a hydraulic chain tensioner. Almost no tension is put on the chain until the oil pump creates pressure. And yeah, that's an air temp sensor. Another reason for the poor running could be the pcv could of lost its tps settings since the battery went flat.

Also fuel was old, and it takes a while before new fuel runs through pump and lines and nozzles; does not start, idles poorly. And battery was empty, engine cranks but spark is very weak; does not start, idles poorly. So next time, take light fuse off, start the engine, and run it (using throttle) at least 10-15 minutes before doing anything else. Also air intake/ air filter was totally changed, that leads easily to start and idle problems.

Thats not an O2 sensor (those go in the exhaust header) thats prob an intake air temp sensor!!! No such thing as "Tuned for Warmer weather" it either has a fuel issue,(clogged filter? injector?) or has still the stock Map in the ECU and was never flashed or doesnt have a Power commander or whatever after the guy did all the mods- with modern Fuel injected bikes you have to alter the Computer chip in some way to compensate for engine mods, airbox mods, etc - (Like jetting does in a standard carb bike) PS: a Suzuki DR650 engine would be a better choice, IMHO

It's the battery. Fuel injection needs a well charged battery to run properly. And as stated in other comments that sensor was an air temp sensor that changes your a/f mixture for cold starts.
@rprokopow4 жыл бұрын
Its valves, timing, or compression. Yes fuel injection needs power to run but once its running it can run normally off the charging system so the fact the its running and still running like crap says its not that. Last owner threw all kinds of junk on it and probably messed up a mixture of stuff in the top end

A better way to tell if a timing chain is worn out is to turn it on its side (as in the pins of the chain are up and down pointing at the floor and ceiling) and hold the chain on one end...a new chain will be pretty straight and a worn chain will sag really bad. I think your issue here was fuel related like others mentioned. The lines and everything still had crap gas in it and would take a bit to get fully flushed by clean gas. You got her running though! Persistence always pays off.

Just a heads up, the issue was the sheered pin. I’ve had that once before. The sheered pin allows for that timing to change and float wherever it wants to be. It could run ok and then like dog poo. You finding that and thinking you did it is not at all the case. It was sheered before. You replaced it and had the correct timing, which corrected the issue

650 swap would be insane. As far as this engine goes, it’s behaving like it has low compression, slap that compression tester on it and see where she’s at. This could be caused by a valve not fully closing.

The carb had bad gas so a cleaning is a must. The timing surely was out as it sheared the key! The hard starting is due to higher compression you need a decompression valve to fire up easier.

I had an Yamaha TT 2005 4 stroke engine with big bore kit and bigger lift cam and it was the same, cold you could hardly get it started and them when it was warm, it worked like no other. So maybe the cam makes it harder to start when cold. And is there a choke on the carb? Mine had and helped with the cold start.
@MAJ_T_Bagger4 жыл бұрын
I'd say pull the air flow sensor out and see if it runs better, also does it have a cold start sensor and are the wires backwards if it does? Had a similar starting issue on an engine swap I did a few years back in an old mazda, hard to start then idle would jump up to 1500rpm once warm.

Injector could need a good clean as well as the sensor that is for reading intake temperature or intake temperature AND flow. The air going in could be warmer than the sensor is reading. This makes the map run richer because it thinks it's colder or it could also control the cold start idle control.. just a few things to check over. Had similar issue with a Kawasaki w650 before. One cylinder was running ok the other was running so rich it was flooding and running like shit. The intake temperature wire had snapped off one of the air boxes and it ran beautifully when it was connected back up.
