You got this for around $3,000!!!??? I need a car 🚗 and was thinking 🤔 of doing an auction. I made my living buying auction cars, tricking them out and reselling them turning 4 to 6 cars a month from 1996 to 2001. I only purchased Volvo 240 Turbo or GT wagons or two doors, 740GLT, 860GLT dual overhead cam versions C70&V70 Turbo R models, Mitsubishi Gallant Turbo, Eclipse Turbo, Lancer EVO and Rally, Nissan 240SX converting front/side skirts and rear to JDM Silvia Q or Skyline R33 or R34 DETT clones with RB34 motor converted for RWD only, high milage 300ZX 1990 and newer modified with RB34 DETT motors, Toyota Supras, Cellica, Starlet turbos all mostly refitted with 2JZ Turbo's, BMWs stuffing V8 motors in them making making M3 clones, Firebirds/Burlanetta and RS Camero beefing up V8 with built lowers/ ported alloy heads, Trans AM and IROC interiors fuel injection with twin screw superchargers, Cutlass Supremes Turbo charged to be GNX clones or 442 big blocks with B&M Lightning rod shifters, some of the Cutlass Supremes, Monte Carlo and 2 door Impala would get Chevy 400 small block bore and stroked to 427 with B&M twin Screw superchargers, pre 1982 Z28, RS and LT Cameros would get the 83 Z28 body treatment including cutting in T tops but pulling stock motors and dropping in TPI IROC or Vett motors, I would invest $1,500 to $6,000 in a car and had a formula for needed max purchase price, exact modifications, investment needed, sale price that would make a hot car sale fast but bring me 30 to 50% margins only possible because roll cages, apolstry and transmission rebuild were the only labor and parts out sourced. An example of my personal car for 15 years: I know what I'm doing as the first auction car was an 1985 Volvo 240 DL wagon in Blue body on Blue interior. The power back passenger and front passenger windows did not roll up, the engine was caked in thick oil top to bottom but only on the valve cover side, it had one Volvo Vergo Turbo alloy wheel and 3 steel, the back windows was cracked, it had green mold starting all over the interior due to the windows, the 285,000 mile motor blew thick black and blue smoke, the headlights were all busted out and one tail light, the vinyl back and drivers seats had horribly worn out springs and cushions as well as being torn every place there was a sewing seam, the rear bumper was missing and the 3rd row backwards facing seat was rusty with chrome falling off of it. Oh all the blue paint was so oxadized the car almost looked white. Within one day after a trip to Pick N Save Auto Salvage I had windows working from new solenoids, I replaced the dash cluster with the old 240 GT Rally group that had Oil Press, H2O Temp, RPM up to 80,000, speedo od 0 to 200KMH, Turbo Boost in bar not just a colored arch, Volt charge and fuel. In addition I added the two pod 52mm vertical Guage and the 3 pod horizontal adapter below the heat vent those had Volvo and aftermarket clock, oil temp by numbers, water pressure, oil temp inside Turbo, lap /1/4 mile/ best lap & drag time/ light reaction time/ shift timer, I also added shift indicator lights for 2nd and 3rd to keep prime torque/rpm, installed the rare Momo GT racing steering wheel, installed rare alloy gas, brake, clutch pedals, broke down all seats and shapped foam to have hip/thigh bolsters with adjustable knee support/ netted head rest/ space for pass through 5 way harnesses front and rear, covered in Blue Alcantara with leather accent on high contact areas, no carpet just shapped black chrome diamond plate, simple U shapped roll bar with x cross bar, 3rd row seat was sand blasted/powder coat black and recovered/shaped to feel like mini race seats for kids under 13yrs, exterior reworked to have custom group buy Volvo Flat style Carbon Fiber hood, race tie downs in addition to stock hardware, replaced steel bodied doors and hatch with rare alloy ones from Bavaria Limited 240 GLT, replaced grill with custom black mesh wire for better intercooler air, one square headlight removed and ducted to intake filter, custom lighting installed to appear all 4 light worked, Painted deep Candy Apple Blue with 2ft wide black strip from bumper to bumper, hatch type R V70 spoiler cut and shapped to fit, ground effects for V70 Type R modified for front under bumper valence, side shirts and under bumper rear, stock NA 240 motor and Trans pulled. 20,000mi White block 5 cyclender Turbo motor from V90R with T-6 transmission and custom alloy drive shaft, Ford 9" rear axle, 18" V70 R 5 spoke wheels installed with Wheelwood brakes 16"F & 15" rear drilled and slotted hallow sodium filled 2pc rotors, steel brake lines booster to caliper all around, 3" Exahust exiting out rectangle chrome tip under drive side passenger door, ecus chipped and programed by Volvo Power Sports of Sweden who linked to the car from Sweden and we did pulles over and over all night (day for them) till they narrowed down 3 tunes to choose from/Drag=high torque under 6000 rpm, track optimal power band at 5000 to 7000rpm and street that gave me 25mpg town and allowed me to do 120mph at only 3000rmp interstate.

I have a 2012 X6 50ix with the same N63B44O0. Mine skipped timing at about 130k miles (broken chain guides, stretched chain and worn tensioners, you know, N63 stuff). However, I was getting errors on both cam position sensors on the bank. The fact that you are only getting an error on one and it's fluctuating, could mean you're lucky and it's only a cam phaser, or REALLY lucky and it's just a bad sensor. Start simple with the sensor, because it's easy to get to. To do the cam phaser is not an engine out job, so that would still be relatively cheap (but still super labor intensive as you have to take everything off the top and it's all hard to get to...). While you're there, you may as well do the tensioners and re-time, too. If you end up having to do a timing chain and guides, like I did (the chain stretch is pretty gnarly and the guides break into pieces, which you'll find everywhere), it's engine-out and costs $4k in parts (thats even with OEM aftermarket) . You have to take the heads off to get the guides and chains out, which is utterly rediculous (its a full rebuild at that point)... it took forever, but I did it, it runs well and I love it. The luxury features are still relevant, it still gets compliments at 12 years old, and it rips in full dynamic sport traction, in manual shift mode. Never fails to put a smile on my face! You'll just barely break even on the full rebuild, with the current resale, so you gotta really love it to get that deep into it, tho...

Bmw tech here, there's updated turbo coolant lines that are braided and the rear suspension is known to have alignment issues and eat rear tires also. Many people buy these N63s at auction in Toronto, bring them for inspection, realize it needs valve seals or timing chains for 10k+ and then just return them to the auction. Great cars when they run right though, good luck Alex!

BMW tech here, few things. First and foremost make sure to register that battery since I’m sure the auction center didn’t. If you don’t it’ll wear out within a few months and you’ll need to put yet another battery in. This car looks to be in good shape but there was definitely a reason it was traded in. I knew someone who owned an X6 exactly like this and he was literally afraid to drive it because something would break almost every time he took it on a drive. The N63 is notoriously one of bmws most unreliable motors with problems like valve stem seals, turbo cooler lines (which was the coolant leak you showed in the video), vanos issues, and timing chain issues. The engine was so bad that bmw even had a class action settlement where certain cars that fall within certain model years would only have to pay $2500 for an entirely new engine at the dealer if the leaks were bad enough. Hopefully this one doesn’t give you any issues but I know they can be real headaches.

@@avioncamper They’ve redeemed themselves considerably since this engine has come out. The B motors are proving to be very reliable even at high mileage. Even the updated version of this motor, the N63TU, fixed a lot of the issues that the non updated engines had
@doingyamom
@doingyamom 3 ай бұрын
@@mi16t It’s completely dependent on the vehicle. Essentially the vehicle pulls a certain amount of current from a battery depending on its age and voltage. The older the battery is, the more energy it pulls from the battery since older batteries require more current in order to get the same power from them as a new battery. If a car has a new battery but thinks it’s 10 years old it’ll pull too much current and may cause the car to become over voltage and wear the battery out sooner. When you register the battery, the control module is telling the vehicle that it can pull less power from the battery in order to achieve the proper voltage to the vehicle. So in your case it most likely means that your battery wasn’t completely bad so it didn’t need to pull insane amounts of power from it which means your car will more easily adapt to a new battery vs a car like Alex’s. The battery in his car was most likely very dead and probably completely depleted which is why they put a new battery in it, which means it’d be much more important to register the battery in his car vs your car with a battery that most likely wasn’t completely bad yet. I’m not trying to ‘spread lies’, I’m just trying to help.

Try replacing/cleaning the vanos solenoids behind the intercoolers. The lower bolt that fastens the intercooler to the engine is a pain to get to. While you have the intercoolers out, take a dremel to the tab/hole to make it an "open" hole. Then you can pre thread the bolt onto the engine and slip the intercooler onto that bolt. Makes it much easier the next time around. If that's it, $3000 is a steal. Upper oil pan gasket probably should be replaced, but that involves dropping the subframe.

Who know true story behind those photos, so it's refreshing to see you account for their privacy even though the last owners own nothing to you! I had a Volvo S60R which was a really fun car but they are notorious for cracking the block between the cylinder walls. Even with the crack they usually still run totally fine, don't throw any codes, and still make boost while consuming a tiny amount of coolant. That's what the beginning of this video makes me think of. I would also love to see you work on and upgrade a Volvo V70 R at some point. Seems right up your alley and you can never have enough fast wagons.

The N63 engine (does that rig have the N63 or the S63?) has MASSIVE problems, including a class action lawsuit, recalls, customer care program, etc. BMW was doing engine swaps on these cars, buying vehicles back, and/or doing major replacements on things like vale stem seals, lifters, etc due to the massive issues with the first gen hot-vee design. The S63 engines weren't AS BAD, and the N63TU (technical update) addressed a lot of the issues with the hot-vee design, but weren't implemented until the LCI of the vehicles with the N63. I would do some SERIOUS digging as to what BMW did regarding the recall notice you found in this vehicle. That's the difference between the car still being a S-show vs an actual reliable vehicle. If the underlying issues in the engine weren't addressed, this car is still going to be a lifetime of headache! Also, PLEASE stop dealing with Avalon Kings! They were good when they came out but only due to marketing hype and LOTS of advertising. Since everyone in the industry has stopped dealing with Avalon Kings, detailers have realized their products are essentially crap. For the same cost and effort, you can get MUCH better ceramic coating products! Even COTS like Meguiars makes better products the Avalon Kings.

Dude - Audi has the same sht with gearbox oil. I don't know if BMW also use ZF boxes, but that's what's in my Audi Q7. ZF say change the fluids +70k miles. Audi says lifetime - who will I believe? I choose the folks that made the damn gearbox ;) I had mine done recently (inc rear diff and transmission case) and it wasn't cheap (ZF oil is ludicrously expensive and it's the only option), but it's cheaper than a new box :) I suspect you are spot on in that car manufacturers list "lifetime" in terms of warranty - thereafter not their issue ;)

Alex, you said "Das Zylinder", but that is incorrect. It is "Der Zylinder". Das ist der Zylinder. Unless you say you want to look at it, then it is let's look at "Den Zylinder". Schauen wir uns mal den Zylinder an. If you are refering to a part belonging to the cylinder (like the conrod), it is "Des Zylinders ". Das ist der Pleuel des Zylinders. And if you have several, it is "Die Zylinder". Das sind die Zylinder. See, German's not that hard. Recommended reading is "The Awful German Language" by Mark Twain.

Non-TU N63s are actually really great if you know how to work on them. Just throw in some updated valve stem seals, index 12 injectors, eldor coil packs, and they'll run great. Granted the original owners of the cars didn't understand the whys or hows for the maintenance and repairs and that's what made the cars depreciate so terribly. Then word-of-mouth about how they dumped their 50i trim level bmw because it needed repairs done really ruins the engine's reputation. Yeah they are crappy engines for people that know nothing of cars, but that's how it is. You can't have a hot-V twin turbo V8 without accepting the risk of more in depth repairs being needed. I really dislike how people say that BMWs are terrible cars and how unreliable their N20 car was because they only changed the oil every 20k miles and did no other maintenance. BMWs require an actual maintenance plan, not whatever you do to your 1zz camry, that's just the cost of driving a car that was engineered with performance as the focus point. Don't let people scare you about the X6 Alex, throw some rear springs in it (if that's what it ends up being, might also be the air supply pump) and do the engine repairs. It'll be a great car to drive, although really ugly.

Owned this model from 0km, I know it from top to bottom. My engine died at 98k km and replaced by BMW altough I had to pay the job. Both turbo needed an overhaul as well. This car with this N63B30 is not worth to have even for DIY enthusiastic. One regular maintenance at every 8-10k km is not just an oil change but a complete engine - turbo check. Practically you have to disassemble the top of the engine all the time to check every pipe, sensor, spark plugs, turbo wheel state, etc. I guess the cooling pipes should be replaced regurarly due to the excess heat on the top. Turbo cooling rubber pipes leak all the time if you not replacing them regurarly. Extending the oil change interval and neglecting the replacement of the cooling lines result a dead turbos within 10-30k km depending on driving style. I loved this car when it was new but never - ever touched it again even if they gave it to me free. If you want to drive this car than look for the newer engine variants like TU, TU2 which have design changes in the oil cooling sytem. But please note due to this sturctural design (V piston arrangement and turbos within the V) the engine will not last too much regardless of the optimal maintenance work. You can nöt correct a screwed design. This engine is designed to last 100-150k km. After that it is a ticking bomb.

Those are sooooo fugly!!! Usually we seem to share the same taste in vehicles but definitely NOT this one. Back when I worked for Motor Trend magazine I became more and more disillusioned with the BMW brand the more I drove them. They were boring drives because they went from the "ultimate driving machine" to the "ultimate driven machine" because the vehicle had more to do with the driving experience than the driver. They were diluting the driver experience more and more and...they lost me forever. And them came the ugliness, which has just gotten worse and worse. You couldn't pay me to drive one of those fugly turds. Maybe try testing an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quattroporte or anything from Porsche. Compare the driving experience, and you'll thank me later.
