People just need to expand their horizon a little bit more and may stop lusting after certain watches that then drives up the price with all the demand. Rolex makes some excellent watches such as Datejust and Yacht-Master that might be easier to locate. Only people that are into watersports and diving really should get a submariner but there seems to be a lot of couch divers out there.

i think its imp to say that the way you create this "relationship" is you need to spend a shitload of money with that AD not just on watches but other jewlery as well... you need to be a high end repeat customer... thats the key... yes its nice that your friendly and courteous and visit often with the AD BUT! unless u got enough jingle in your pocket then it aint gonna happen.. thats why a certain few always get these watches.. i know cause this is how i got all my pateks ... rolexes and AP's .. its really not a secret ... it really common sense... but great addition to the collection

My AD has sold me several Daytonas, including the SS white (Panda), SS black, two-tones, multiple Oysterflex, and multiple solid gold (including a Rainbow). As LWC says, it's good to get in early (before the hype) and form a deep relationship. if you're starting now then it's obviously too late to build a relationship before the hype but you can still do it over time. It might take longer now, but that's OK. Be patient and enjoy the watches as you get them...and just keep in touch, be likeable, show your passion...the common sense stuff.

@@damachine3 It also depends on the AD but recognising a Rolex before it gets popular is not that easy and if you had that ability you really need to be focused on market investment. I think what more people need to do is start buying Rolex watches that are suitable for their lifestyle.

@@bighands69 Of course it depends on the AD. I have dealt with multiple ADs and they are all different, but the common sense stuff applies to all. Also, of course you never know what's going to be popular...that wasn't my point. The point is, now that Rolexes are super hyped, there is still hope...it just takes more diligence and patience. As for your last point, I agree that you should always buy what you love but, no matter what you love with Rolex, it's still being done in a context of Rolex hype...which is the topic at hand.

I went to my local AD here in Princeton, NJ, USA last week and they had ZERO Rolex watches in stock. Not a Date-Just, Day-Date, literally nothing. And they are a major AD who has been contracted with Rolex since the 1940s. I was honestly shocked. Beautiful Daytona though. I have the white dial and it’s probably my favorite watch in my current lineup.

Rolex are not interested in second hand market or grey market. They manufacture the watch and then sell it to the retailer at a certain price. The problem is that population of middle class people has increased in the world and Rolex cannot keep up with that demand in the short term.

An absolute dream watch but I think I will never get the chance to buy it for retail because I don't have that much rolex watches so my relationship to the AD is not that important for them. But as you said in the video, relationship is everything! I have a good relationship to my Omega AD e.g. I just called them because I want the Snoopy and they said that I will get it in about 6 months where others have to wait 1 1/2 years. I picked up my first rolex about 4 months ago. 36mm Datejust fluted jubilee blue dial. I love it but want to get at least a Pepsi or and Daytona for my Dad. My local Ad is small and I was told they haven’t received a steel Daytona in 2 years. Do you think this is true?

Rolex manufacture the watches and then sells them to the dealers at a certain price. The issue Rolex has is that they cannot keep up with the middle class demand that has increased over the last 25 years. I would say people need to stop lusting after certain trendy watches and start getting a watch that is suitable for their life style. Is your father a pilot, scuba diver or race car driver? If he is any of those things then clearly you probably want to get him a Rolex that matches that lifestyle. I am a scuba diver that cannot get hold of a submariner because Rolex cannot keep up with AD demand. If your father does not do any of the activities I listed above then get him another Rolex that might not be as expensive but equally as nice and suitable for his life style.

I'm also not planning a summit of Everest, I guess I just shouldn't own an Explorer either. The whole ethos of a steel Rolex being a 'true' tool made specifically for a task died out decades ago. They have long since been a luxury/ aspirational brand for many. If this isn't true, why make a dive watch like the Submariner in solid 18k gold which is soft and more susceptible to wear and tear, or a racing chronograph like the Daytona with a factory set diamond baguette bezel, completely replacing the tachymeter? It literally can't then do the one thing it was originally designed to do...

I wear my watch as a tool, Omega Seamaster Professional Chronograph because I use the stop watch function a lot. Daytona is my dream watch but even if I can afford it and have one I won't be enjoying it very much, it will be just a safe queen. I wouldn't dare to put scratches on it and I would be way too careful and worry about wearing it all the time. My Omega is by no mean cheap but inexpensive enough I am not too worry as a daily wearer. I consider myself a watch wearer not a collector.
