I Bought The Cheapest Volvo V70 R SPACEBALL In The USA!

My BMW Z4 was totaled, so I did what any reasonable person would do... I bought a Volvo.
This isn't just ANY Volvo though... THIS is a 2005 V70 R with the spaceball manual! The "R" line is basically Volvo's version of AMG, which means it's the fast one. There's a lot to unpack with this high performance, manual Volvo V70R, so come along as I check it out and then take my new car out for a drive!

@@windronner1 Yup, through to the early 2000s, the T5 was a very common sight on UK motorways (generally doing well over 100 MPH on a blue light run). In Europe, Ford fitted a variant of this engine in the MK2 Focus ST that never made it to the US and there's loads of those still kicking about. What an engine, the torque....and THAT sound!

My 2003 Volvo S60 sat in the Los Angeles sun since it was new, when i sold it at 15 years old, the interior looked like new, no crack or rips in the leather or dash. Best car I ever owned, only 2 nights in the shop in 15 years. My only gripe was the turning radios for a U turn was the worst.

I've just replaced my 1999 Mk I V70 for a 2003 Mk II V70. I love them! The "new" one has the same engine as the old one - the 5-cylinder, 140 bhp non-turbocharged petrol engine. This engine is very economical - I don't need high performance, although I do have R rims. The car is extremely comfortable and so practical. The back seats fold down very cleverly so that they form a flat surface all the way from the tailgate to just behind the front seats. Great sound system too. Looking forward to seeing how you restore yours.

fixitnick This thing is sick!!! One thing I suggest, for vid content dark blue/black is not always best, how about a wrap? A camo wrap perhaps? A lime wrap? Maybe something never seen before?

This is a really rare colour, not sure why you’d wrap it and hide it. Maybe just switch up the lighting/location?

A wrap generally does two things, neither is a good look for you at resale time: it makes you look as if you're trying to hide bad paint but you were too cheap to get it repainted properly, and 2) when the next owner takes it off, the adhesive and wrap then damages whats left of what good paint remains on the car. This is a rare car, not just some Crown Vic or Mustang with shoddy paint. It deserves better than a wrap that says "I am too cheap to fix this car's paint and I am going to try to fool the next buyer into thinking it has perfect paint." You wouldn't want a seller doing that to you. Why do that to a prospective buyer of the car? Anytime I see a wrapped car, I see a car owner too lazy or too cheap to fix bad paint the right way, and nine times out of ten, they are trying to hide something from you with a crappy wrap job.

Check the PCV on the engine - remove oil filler cap & place a rubber glove over it, if it inflates with the engine running then the PCV cannister needs replacing ASAP.

I owned a 1996 Volvo 850 Sedan Platinum Limited Edition! I kept it for over eleven years, twice as long as is normal for me, because I loved it so much! I had Bilstein gas pressurized shocks installed almost right away because of their lifetime warranty. It is incredible how much better it rode and handled! Do it immediately on almost any car, the change is incredible.

Great find !! the choice of the R made me a new subscriber. I had owned and driven an '03 V70 2.4 for a year when a guy at work offered me his '04 R for a good price. The suspension had been replaced with one that is not electronic, but otherwise a great car. My first thought was to drop the R drivetrain into the other V70 and make it the ultimate Swedeish brick sleeper wagon. Both are just sitting in the driveway now waiting for time and money to complete the vision. Will be following to see what it takes to refresh yours. Enjoy the process.

As a car journalist I drove it at the presentation of the R at Paul Ricard race track. A nice car that was priced similar to the mighty BMW M3. That didn't do it any favors. A nice underrated car. A great buy, Elliot! Good that you outran Hoovie, who would have bought it and forgot it for a year, then sold it without doing a video of it like he did with the 740 turbo brick.

Great car. I have a 2004 S60 R that I got a month ago and I love it. It's my first car and the first manual car I've ever driven. The V70 R is definitely the cooler one but most of them are double the price. You definitely got a great deal.
