at 4:14 the retention lock seems to fall down into closed position without force. This tells me that the issue is a temperamental retention bracket. Another clue is that sometimes its sticking to the cooler on removal and sometimes it isn't. The way these work is a grid array that slide over the pins to lock them into position. causing them to make proper contact with the pins.

This is likely a result of the motherboard company using cheap base materials in their motherboard which experience more thermal expansion when heated. - Not all motherboard substrate materials are equal! - This is a problem with extremely cheap motherboards, and a good reason to avoid the low-end of the market. It's also a good reason to make sure your case has good cooling.

Well, I did not expect that.. But that being said, I have seen micro fractures in mother boards before. (notably including a server one) Because these boards have so many layers, localised hot spots can physically stress the board as the layers expand at different rates. The ground layer has far more copper than other layers, for example. But between the signals layer and the power layer, a lot of disparity can exist. I would suspect it was the MB being the culprit rather than the CPU, simply because CPUs either connect or they do not, and it worked in another MB fine. So props Lauren. You did a good call, even if it was an unwanted one.

When You figured out the pressure issue, it must have been such an "AHA!" moment. It would've drove me crazy not knowing fully what the cause of the issue might be, and having this kind of an explanation would've been really comforting. While the issue is still there, narrowing down the possible causes gives this clearity so one doesn't feel so stuck.

Problem with asus tuf mobo was user related (owner of the pc), improper mount of the cpu cooler in the past made this issue on the socket. I stopped building pc's for other ppl long time ago, exactlly for these reasons, they do a small fk-up and then is "my problem" when I try to help them. So now I build only for myself with my own hardware and never had those major issues lol. Cheers!
@FirmB1ade2 жыл бұрын
What is probably happening is that the board is bending with the old cooler. This engages the cpu pins and they have been bent slightly in that direction because of it. The new cooler has a stiffer mounting so is applying more direct pressure on the cpu with less vertical bending of the socket. This means the slightly bent pins and socket do not make contact on a couple of pins, disabling those slots. The other cpu from the same gen still makes contact as it's pins have not been bent by being in a curved socket for years. essentially you have a slightly damaged socket and a slightly damaged cpu that both work with undamaged parts. It's great how you showed your workflow of troubleshooting as many people nowdays don't have that kind of logical thinking skills. Something the IT industry is sorely losing. Pc's being so easy to build means people who do it don't need to know how they work like we used to. It's actually good you came across this issue as you can highlight a skill that people definitely need.

Great troubleshooting! Only other thing I might have tried but not the fix in this case is to spray some electrical contact cleaner (I use wd40 specialist electrical contact solvent spray) in to both the ram slots, on the ram contacts, motherboard socket and the cup itself. Always do with power off as can cause condensation, so give time for it to evaporate before putting back together. Very slight chance dirty contact in both a pin and socket hole could the be enough for it not to work. Seems definitely pressure related in this case. Hope you haven't left yourself without a motherboard now though? If so hit me up, might be able to help.

It's possible that there is a micro crack on the motherboard which the new fans retention system is causing stress on. This would be caused by dropping the PC or the PC getting a knock while being transported. Other than that wear and tear on the socket could cause pins not to connect properly. But you would expect that the motherboard would be a lot older than it is for the socket to be worn. Other than that it could be a manufacturing defect. But in that case you would expect the defect to have been noticed from buying the motherboard new and the motherboard would have been replaced under warranty.
@nielderfp2 жыл бұрын
Is it possible that it's a microscopic crack in the MB which opens up when the cooler is tightened or two solder joints on the back of the MB which touch as the cooler, when tightened, slightly bends the MB?
@SianaGearz2 жыл бұрын
You can't really crack those traces. But you can crack the solder joints under the socket, they can be brittle, or the contacts of the socket can be bent somewhat out of shape. Backplate stray contact shouldn't be happening, either the backplate is insulated or they have distances figured out. Keep in mind it does work with different CPUs, so... i'm thinking socket dirt or socket damage.

One thing I can tell you is I never trust moving motherboards in built desktops. Even if you remove the cooler before shipping. There is probably a hairline fracture in the original board that you can't see. The other possibility is when the cooler was removed originally and yanked out the CPU with it that there was some additional strain on the board that worsens the issue. It is very nice you replaced the viewers board but honestly I think it was most likely damaged when being transported.
@keokio72 жыл бұрын
It is definitely a strange issue, something I've never even heard of. The perfectionist side of me would've tested with another cooler just to make sure it isn't isolated to the new cooler, maybe even an aftermarket back plate if there was one. You went out of your way for this PC. The customer should be happy.
@SianaGearz2 жыл бұрын
Was waiting for this. I think this mainboard either has some dirt inside the socket (could be thermal paste residue), or a more serious issue, that the socket solder joints to the PCB are damaged. The socket soldering is a weak point on AM4, and you've seen how mistreated this PC was in the past, if it fell down, well that's not a good time. I was certain you haven't damaged the mainboard when removing the CPU. AM4 CPU shouldn't be pressure sensitive at all, so any pressure effects point towards a socket problem on the mainboard. You can fundamentally have a repairman replace the socket for you with a brand new one, it's equipment and skill intensive but actually a really quick job, and a replacement socket costs almost nothing, so maybe they can offer you a price that makes sense. Thermal paste also gets easily into the edge pins of the socket, which are critical for one of the memory channels. and the slanted hinge part of the socket practically guides paste in there. You can spray into the socket with some nice high pressure isopropanol spray can to attempt to clean it. Or residue-free contact/pot cleaner. Or even plastic-safe brake cleaner though using it near electrolytic capacitors is a little iffy. The CPU should be fine, but the pins might be a little not quite factory-shaped any longer.

Nothing worse than helping a friend or family member with a pc issue to potentially damage it when trying to resolve the initial issue 🤦♂🤦♀😢. It’s a devastating feeling! Thankfully this PC issue was diagnosed and not an issue of the repairer damaging the build. I’ve come across cpu cooler mount issues creating a memory post error myself and checking the cooler mount is the 2nd thing I do ….. after reseating the memory …. As reseating the cpu can be done after checking the cooler mount pressure 😇👍💪.

Great build and really informational... Proves what I've been noticing for ryzen cpus that I've dealth with these past 4 years is that the mounting pressure really affects the cpu - ram/PCIE communication... I have an SFF build which I carry all the time with me when I go on vacation and it has issues with either not posting ,not reading all the memory modules or resetting back to default bios settings. Even an accidental table bump (My system has no HDD) causes my PC to crash and have the above mentioned symptoms. Check the CPU mounts solder joints for dry joints. Check that the CPU didn't get so hot that the solder holding the CPU mount to the motherboard hasn't been adversely affected in some way. (hot cold changes breaking a joint) With surface mount components you can't just take a soldering iron to the board to fix these issues, you need to have a Hot Air Soldering Station to gently melt the solder and then let it set again. Finally check that each hole in the mount is clear of debris and the metal contacts aren't damaged.

About the build: I love it! looks absolutely stunning! With all due respect, looks way better than before. About the malfunction: Since the problem only manifests when pressure is applied to the CPU socket, It could be the contacts on the motherboard on the PGA Socket. they are quite sensitive, believe it or not. That or a bad solder point in one of the components of the motherboard. the CPU coming out with the cooler, even though not ideal, shouldn't be enough to create any permanent issues. the twist and turn technique of removal usually only works with old thermal paste. depending on the new thermal paste viscosity and luck, anything might happen. all of the statements i just made are just my humble experience. I am not stating absolute truths, I am sharing my personal and professional experience. I’m guessing it’s a slightly bent pin on the processor which means as you add pressure it doesn’t get good contact with the socket. I have to inspect pins by spinning the cpu with a well lit magnifying glass looking for ANY minor changes. Use a razor blade to straighten them, but be gentle. It takes very little to move them and or break them off if they are loosened. When it’s in the other board, the issue may not be seen as the contact might be slightly better than the one you see the issue on.

it could also be the copper traces underneath the pressure area being snapped in half. This is something that could accur if the CPU cooler was tightened to much and seeing the state of the pc before it got even to you it seems like the copper traces have snapped because someone tightened it to much. Whenever the heavy cooler is on it it could bent it just out of possition and no make contact thus giving a error. So it looks like a broken copper trace i have had this with a customer before too. the reason this issue does not persist with a lighter cooler or with different CPU's is that the metal covers are not all equal in size and there could be a 1nano meter difference on those cpu's which is enough to offset a broken copper trace i mean the copper traces these days are like 0.25mm so even the smallest offset could prevent data signals from sending

I had a similar issue. The PC worked just fine a night before, but when I turned it on the next day I only got a black screen. When I used only one memory stick it posted just fine. However, when inserting the 2nd one the PC was not posting anymore. Then, I've tried wiggling a little bit the memories and then it worked just fine with all 4 sticks since then. I think it might be an issue with the solder joints at one of the RAM sockets. I really like the way you diagnosed this PC.

Consider that in transport the cpu heat sink could have bent or damaged the cpu seating area. That would explain the tightening issue. Oh and too anyone who owns a Ichill x4 3090 little tip, the retention bracket that comes with it adds thermal temps, if you wanna stop sag get a motherboard mounted gpu sag kit (arorus x470 came with one I’m not sure on newer boards).
