@kikibunni I found a floorplan recently of one of those houses and in the basement they had a hallway (I think that was off the home theater) that had a painted mural of a street.of little shops, and they had a real life street light, like one of the old gas lantern looking ones, sitting in the hall to add a 3d element. Who has that kind of money?! And why?! Hahaha

I live in a 2 bed terraced house that was built in 1878, it had a plumbed-in outside toilet and a tap in the kitchen from the start so it's plausible a house like this could have a simple bathroom indoors, or an indoors toilet at least.

I got a "coffee table" book today on Victorian Style for 30p in the charity shop - literally all the architecture both here and in the US, the history behind the furniture, collections, and there's a "style guide" for each room. It's incredible. I was looking at this exact type of house to build. It would be cool for you to do a series. Maybe all different Victorian styles.

This was so much fun to watch/listen to. Victorian isn't really my style, but I recently inherited an entire dining room set from the era. The other item I got pressured into taking last minute is one of those taxidermied bird displays. Like, nine birds arranged on branches in a large glass cloche, all full of arsenical soap residue from what I've read since. My home aesthetic is now late 19th century natural history museum.

Where I grew up in Ontario all of the old buildings have that brick look too, because there were major brickworks in large parts of Ontario- when I moved away I was surprised by the lack of brick everywhere, I thought that's just how houses looked. London ON especially is known for a really distinctive yellow brick, because of the colour of the clays there- exactly what she was talking about wrt houses being made from the materials of local industry! I think that's really nice; gives places a bit of character and connection to their history, and the land they're on- like a little piece of the land of London Ontario is literally in its houses, still, and it makes them stand out :")

love love LOVE what i find interesting is that here in the US, our victorian homes depend very much on which coast you're on. on the east coast, we use a lot more brick and darker but still rich colours, and look a fair bit more like UK victorians. the west coast is the bright and cheery. however, east coast does still have a TON of queen annes and i would argue ours are nicer looking than the west coast hehe. we also have a lot of gothic revival which is soooo yummy our floorplans are TOTALLY different though. while they are still closed off, they arent as closed off as UK ones

I live in an early 1800's Victorian house in Vermont, except it's been converted into apartments. It's three stories, one apartment for each story. I love hearing you talk about the north in the context of the Victorian era, since I’m from the Black Country so we also have a very rich history in terms of the industrial revolution, so you better believe I was chatting along with you when I was watching this!! The Black Country is literally called that because of the black smoke that was in the air due to all the factories back then, and was famed for the amount of chains it produced, which is why the black country flag features a chain across it.

Another reason for the mass alcoholism that I just learned from the BlindBoy podcast: gin distilleries. Prior to the industrial revolution, brewing high-proof spirits was a small-scale and superstitious (as you can imagine) profession. Then the gin factories came in. Suddenly there was a flood of cheap high proof alcohol, something nobody had ever had that level of access to before. Like if suddenly cocaine was everywhere and $5, you might be more tempted (esp given the working conditions as you said).
