Any indie game trying to replicate Little Nightmares sets itself up for a huge challenge considering what makes Little Nightmares so good is the incredible amount of polish. The designs, animations, visuals, audio, everything has to be on top of their game to come together and feel like an animation movie at times. This is really hard to top or improve on as an indie game... Despite this, it's obvious a lot of work went into it so I'm looking forward to seeing if they can expand on their original mechanics to stand out rather than stay "Little Nightmares but not as good"

Little nightmares itself was an indie game... and no, it was not that difficult given it was made with unreal engine 4.
@Woufh2 жыл бұрын
@BuzzingGoober Indie is a very broad term nowadays, there's still a big gap between an indie studio (Tarsier currently had 55 employees in 2021, though the number was probably lower when LN 1 released) and a one to three man project. Unreal Engine 4 is powerful and has lots of pre-made assets, but I don't think it's right to say it wasn't difficult, especially if the dev is not that experienced. There's obviously some custom assets, character animation and not a lot of reused environments. Making games is easier than ever these days, but even a 15 minutes experience of this kind is a lot of work for a new and small indie studio and UE4 still isn't an automatic game making software, otherwise the average game would be way better

one thing i love about johns vids is how he offers genuine critique to the games he plays. sardonic, sure, but it never feels like hes just trying to tear it down or ONLY ever speaks from a place of personal taste. as an artist (albeit not game dev), seeing someone with good critique skills is really refreshing. when john calls something a blatant emulation, it's not him going OHHHHHH THIS GAME HAS FOG SILENTHILL RIPOFF, and he offers genuinely good advice as to how to elevate the game further if they want to stick with their little nightmares schtick. hope the dev sees this

Echoing what a lot of others are saying, it seems too close to Little Nightmares for my liking. I mean- the size of the playable character + their mannerisms, the platforming mechanics, the sets, the enemy concepts, the camera movements, the puzzle solving, the beds, the kitchen, the meat hooks, the vents, the list goes on and on. It’s like they didn’t even try to hide it. The main difference was the cat mechanic and while it was cool, I don't think that's enough to justify this lol. Where does inspiration end and blatant mimicry begin? Doesn't feel right to me at all. I guess I just really hope the final product tries harder to be its own thing.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing to take inspiration from something, especially a game as good as Little Nightmares. BUT it can be a double edged sword as when you make something with such heavy inspiration (and it’s *not* as good) you’ve got no room for error. Because there’s no reason to play an unpolished “clone” of a better product, especially when the better product still exists.
@H0TR0B2 жыл бұрын

@@itsgonnabeanaurfromme its not that its nothing but a copy. There are interesting things like character and creature designs that I can see time and effort put into. However, much of the gameplay itself (not the story which we have some of and see that it deviates from the comparison to LN) is quite similar but in a less smooth way. While not necessarily buggy, that gameplay (being as similar as it is) will be constantly compared to the much smoother highly successful LN. They aren't any less intelligent for calling attention to a very obvious fact that this gameplay is blatantly similar to LN. In fact its good solid criticism to offer the Devs to deviate from such similarities and branch out and improve gameplay and make it more unique. People seem to really appreciate the cat mechanic, so leaning into unique things such as that would help the devs a lot.

Fr each scene just tries to recreate memorable environments and moments from Little Nightmares without understanding that each environment and moment is contexualised by its narrative significance and atmosphere. you cannot just cycle from a "daycare" to a "meat hook line" to a "dark vent" to a "cannabilistic chef" back to back without reason. The game needs to have _something_ unique or else it just becomes a poor collage of Little Nightmares scenes.

Whilst I love little nightmares I can't help but feel this game really needs to craft more of it's own identity. I said when little nightmares came out that it reminded me of playdead studios titles but still had it's own feel. This really feels like it's replicating the first little nightmares but with janky looking movement. Now I don't mind games taking ideas from little nightmares but when you make something this much like it then you set your self up for comparisons. Looking at this demo I don't really see anything that makes me want to play this over little nightmares which is a shame. I hope the full game has more of it;'s own identity.

I feel like this dev doesn't really get what made Little Nightmares special, it seems that they "ripped off" the most obvious aspects of the game but ignored the details that give it character. This might sound pretentious, but what this game lacks and LN is very good at is art: the monster designs, the amazing use of color, the concepts behind settings and characters, the sound design, etc. If the dev worked on these things, maybe they could set themselves apart from LN while making a much more enjoyable and cohesive game.

Right from the title screen it looks like a Little Nightmares fangame. The first clear difference is the lighting. In Little Nightmares proper, all the dark areas would be pitch black and the lit areas would be brighter. There's also careful choice of subtle colors. It better establishes a creepy, ethereal mood. The second clear difference is the unfinished AI. LM's enemies look around for you and come get you. This game's enemies just wiggle a finger at you like Argus Filch or, y'know, break and stand there doing nothing. And, of course, the character's movement isn't as fluid, especially noticeable in the butcher chase which would be _far_ more streamlined and polished in LM. All in all the differences between this and LM are due to this game feeling less finished or professional than LM does. I like how the ugly bullies throw you down and kick you like that one JoJo meme.

Why did the boy climb into the van--did he know it was about to leave or where it would go? And what was with the butcher turning into a monster all of a sudden? Just a lot of questions so far, y'know?

No. You can't sue about a game looking, and playing similarly, even if it's to the letter. As long as it has a different name, different characters and different assets there's really nothing they can sue about. If the main character was a little girl with a yellow raincoat and followed around little pointed head mushroom people they could possibly have a case, but even then they wouldn't have the right to all characters that are little girls that wear yellow raincoats. But what you're suggesting is like if Rare sued Playtonic Games for Yooka Laylee. It just has no legal standing for actual plagiarism.

Not saying Mark isn't actually that ADD in real life and that he is just acting goofy for the viewer, and I enjoyed Unus Annus as much as the next person, but... Idk. It feels like Mark is a good staring point. If you are new to KZbin and/or new to horror let's plays (remember when they were called that?) Mark is a nice, easy entry point. But eventually, you're going to grow out of it. Your tastes will mature and you'll find (someone like) John.

This needs a lot of polishing but it has potential, it just needs to look more unique or different from Little Nightmares and there you go

If this were a student product, it would actually be good. The problem with this game is not that it takes inspiration from Little Nightmares, but rather that it lacks an identity. On top of that, it lacks creativity. Why play a clone with shallow gameplay when you can play the real thing with a genuine experience?

I like to think it wasn't a bug at all, the little boy was just being pouty and refusing to jump after John kept making him try to pry open the vent and fall on his tush. "No! >:C NO! >:C NO!!! >:CC ... Fiiiiiiiiiine. >:C"

I honestly dont mind an inofficial Little Nightmares "spinoff", "clone" or whatever you wanna call it, they can copy as much as they like, as long as they add something to differentiate their game from the original.

Its so much a Little Nightmare Clone KZbin tagged it as that :'D But tho it could be a good game unless they don't take the criticism and polish it.

John can you play the games (out of sight) and (Light, black cat and amnesia girl) as well? Their basically little nightmares clones but with unique ideas.

Here's the thing: All games that include animals need to make them invincible, allow you to give them food, and able to pet them. You have now seen the hill I will die on.
