I took a flight to meet my friend in Dallas, and got an unexpected clearance right over the top of one of the world's busiest airports!

Fun fact - when trying to traverse major airspace it’s often easier for ATC to send you directly over the airport (perpendicular to the runways) as this keeps you well clear of both the arrival and departure corridors. So fun seeing you fly around the US now!

The controllers at DFW are just phenomenal to work with. Back about two decades ago I was flying the camera helicopter for the CBS affiliate there, and they would let us go just about anywhere we wanted. Great people.

DFW likes to give the scenic tour. Was giving an instructional instrument flight out of ADS a few weeks back and they put us right over the top of Love, DFW and Executive. Had an AA 777 landing right below us on the way back.

Noel, a belated welcome to Texas! The next time you're in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex let me know, there's a steak & beer with your name on it. Side note: I guess you'll get quite used to IAH & perhaps HOU. I fly through HOU a lot for my trips and videos so eventually I'll probably run into you.

407 BBQ is amazing! They will mop the floor with Dickie's and Spring Creek any day of the week. Know that Fort Worth also has some of the best Mexican restaurants around. I am a civil engineer and had some projects at AFW, FTW, Northwest Regional (52F), and even NFW, so seeing you fly around such familiar places is fun!

Adele, beautiful voice. Just saying. Great vlog Noel. Loving the new location. I hope you visit the old World sometime for a comeback vlog. To anyone. Do US hours count on UK License for means of keeping you current or if you leave it too long before coming back to the UK do you have to retake test or update or is it transferable?

Ah dear old Denton. I used to work there!!!!!! It is ALWAYS much safer for small/light Aircraft to be at 90 degrees perpendicular to major runways like those at DFW. You are, after all, a couple of thousand feet ABOVE the heavy guys. A fun fact about 407 BBQ is that it is in front of a great gun range that both myself and a couple of my colleagues use called 407 Gun Club (the 407 in all this is the road number). There is another just one more exit off I-35 to the south, called Quail Creek.

When you fly to Oregon or Washington (Tillamook OR comes to mind) visit the Fred Meyer. Kroger bought the chain, which is 100 years old this year and predates WaLmart by a bit, but was born as the one stop shop clothes jewelry, pharmacy, furniture, sporting goods, gelato, a bar even in some stores.. I spend 16 hours a week 3-7am stocking shelves in the toys sports, school, and automotive departments with the odd coverage in tools and storage just outside Seattle where we do have the starbucks but not the bar or gellato.

I don't think the Tx DPS is used to handling legal foreigners, as most all of ours aren't legal. The drivers license is the golden ticket to everything here, including air travel, voting & benefits, and it's the main form of ID. It can be hard even for citizens to get one if you don't have all the supporting documents, and if you let it lapse they don't even accept their own issued licenses after being expired 2 years! You're supposed to get a new one every time you change your address. There's also an ID that is much cheaper if you don't drive.

You’re flying with the big boys and girls now. Not your cruising around the Midlands. Where you’re based now, the US Severe Storms Prediction Center’s “Convective Outlook” will be very helpful in planning your flight days. Example: convective forecast for Thanksgiving day in your area shows a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms. Speaking of thanksgiving, have you tried the American traditional foods: pumpkin pie, cornbread stuffing, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, cranberry sauce, etc. Thursday Will be your chance. Enjoy the feast!

Doesn't his gear go up? Any reason it's not up?
@skyhawk_4526
@skyhawk_4526 Жыл бұрын
Nope, "down and welded." The Piper PA-28 has "fixed gear" like most common single-engine light planes in use today and in the past. In order to fly retractable gear airplanes (at least in the US), you normally need a "complex" aircraft endorsement. Most retractable gear airplanes are also classified as "high performance" (having more than 200 horsepower) which requires another endorsement on your license. Both endorsements are often obtained at the same time, but require additional training beyond a standard PPL. The Piper PA-28s Noel flies are primarily used as training aircraft for student pilots, so the systems are kept fairly simple like the fixed landing gear, standard fixed-blade propeller, and about 150-180 horsepower engine. This not only enhances safety (for the inexperienced pilot) but also keeps costs down. The plus side of retractables is a few extra knots of cruise speed and potentially better fuel economy, but the downside is higher maintenance (and often operating) costs and more likelihood of a "gear up" landing - either due to a mechanical failure or due to a low-time pilot used to flying fixed-gear planes forgetting to lower the landing gear. The very similar looking Piper Arrow does have retractable landing gear and is considered a complex airplane (but not high-performance, since its engine is rated at, but not above, 200-hp). It's often used as a trainer by flight schools for pilots looking to transition to retractable landing gear airplanes and obtain their complex aircraft endorsement, but has operating costs not much higher than a Piper Archer. Low time pilots tend to avoid the high-performance endorsement until they gain a few hundred hours of flying experience since it can be virtually impossible for a low time pilot to obtain insurance for a high-performance plane until they have so many hours of flying experience. The insurance premiums and the overall operating costs of these planes themselves are generally quite a bit more expensive which is another reason simpler four-seater planes like the Piper PA-28 and Cessna 174 are more commonly flown by most private pilots.

@@FlyWithNoelPhilips ohh right 😅 i guess i just misunderstood that rule. for whatever reason i was under the impression that "clear of clouds" mean you stay super far away from them or that it has to be a very clear day. now im learning that my interpretation of the rule doesn't make any freaking sense!!! new pilot here so i love a learning moment. Thank you for that!!
