i feel lucky i got started as a toyota dealer tech in 2016. the job security is wonderful. i took the last 1.5 yrs off because i did service writing, but i miss the satisfaction of taking a broken car and fixing it and being the hero the "other shop" couldn't or wouldn't do. still got my tools and going to meet a shop owner monday. something tells me ill probably get the job! Cheers, lucky!

Great interview. Prime example of why I got out of rebuilds for money, and not keeping my retail dealer license. Absolutely facts. No good deed goes unpunished

Losing your retail license was a mistake IMO. Always good to have + the market will reset and come back around again. STAY PATIENT..

Hello Lucky, I'm a big fan of your channel. I like receiving updated detailed information on different industries and you do great work on the automaker. Please consider putting the contact information you speak to on the bottom of the screen while they are talking so it is easy for viewers to pick it up and more helpful for your guest. The description is good, but this is better. Also, please consider talking about the trucking industry if you get updated information through your data companies. It could add another dimension to your channel. Stay safe!

Great video Lucky! I saw the beginnings of today's situation clear back in the 90's. The body shop I started at was typical small-town, mid-cornfield location. We did decent work at a good price - lots of rust repair, some insurance, a few ag-equipment re-sprays - it was where most folks in town went for repairs. However, his shop's rising insurance premiums and material prices pushed him into retirement in the mid 2000's. Nowadays if you want rust repair done, good luck - it's either a quote for $8K to replace a single panel, or you're simply shown the door.

Older dude I play poker with owned a body shop for years. Said he charged more in storage fees and made more doing that than the actual work. I think he said $300 a day or something high like that. Insurance would say we ain't paying. He said fine don't pay but the clock is ticking. See you in court. He said they always ended up paying. 😅 crazy. I fix and restore classics as a side hustle. I tried so many shops here in socal. Most only take insurance work. The others will take your car and keep it for years and years. Lots of low rider guys to my surprise use earl shieb or maaco. I was so tired of the body shop BS I started painting my own rides.

Same nonsense in dentistry. The best description I heard: The insurance company is the pimp, they get paid first and take no risk. The client is the John. They want to be serviced as quickly as possible for the lowest price. The provider is the hooker. They get paid last and take all the risk. Puts things in perspective.

Good video because it reminds me why I do what I do. Sounds like the first two guys weren’t incentivized with enough money based on other projects that are bidding you up

I ran my own bodyshop for 2 years and shut it down getting paid as a nightmare I employed 2 men part time a body prep guy and a paint prep guy I had the rent of the workshop to pay for and the rest of the bills because it wasn't a top of the range workshop people wanted a discount people have no idea of the costs involved in a workshop

I’ve been wanting to ask that question about cars being totaled out. I’m in the wheel repair and use to see a car totaled once a month, now it’s like 5 a month per body shop that I visit and I have 10 shops. Can you do a specific video about this and how it ties in with the current market

I totally understand. Vegas is different. My issue was i wanted a f350 CC repainted but all the shops I went to would not touch it because it would take up their shop and booth vs painting panels. If they did want to paint the lowest price was 18k

I was shop mechanic from 2014-2018. I quit in 2018 since the dealership didn’t give a crap about their mechanics. If the shop is making $120-150 an hour back then. and pays the mechanic 1/5 to 1/4 of that, that is why people leave. Nowadays I see rates $150-$250 an hr and still average hr rate is 30/hr or less. I now do side mechanic work and I charge $100/hr. Pretty much do some of my neighbors and the rest word of mouth. On top of that I have so much more free time to do stage hand every time there is an event. So in total more free time, more money per hr and 100% less stress.

Body shops and similar businesses need to have their customers pay up front a non-refundable $5k retainer. This would weed out 99.9% of scammers. #luckylopez I suspect your guard is up when a new customer approaches you vs a known customer.

Mechanics are being mistreated by dealer management, same for for body guys, High Schools dont teach trades anymore, i have 30 years dealership parts experience, body shop experience. In a few years the values of these high tech cars will drop because dealers wont have ENOUGH trained good people to do this work.

I am in Philippines bought used scooter and asked to replace all maintenance on bike. dude spend 2h to take engine apart to replace all belts , brakes and all fluids and total labor cost was $5
