(Failing that, he could always set the succession laws to something like Tanistry or Fuedal Elective to start over as a count. Other ways, such as changing religion, would also up the difficulty for a bit)

Minor misconception, but Ragnar Lothbrok wasn't directly killed by the king of northumbria. He was captured and then thrown into a pit of snakes to die in agony. His treatment, along with the fact that he died outside of battle, thus no valhalla, was undoubtly insulting to his sons. Hence the immediate mass invasion.
