Where does he live? 'cause I live in a city and you can't juse "go outside your house" for fun, you only go out if you have to, there's no point going outside for fun if someone is going to stab and rob you or hit you with their car. Maybe if you live in a nice little rural town with 2000 people who all know each other and there's no crime, but it's 2023, in urban societies you go outside on the street sparingly, unless you're totally comfortable with being shot if someone thinks you looked at them the wrong way, which, surprisingly, ost of us aren't comfortable with, so you can't blame people. Like the actual privilege honestly, of living somewhere so nice you don't have to worry about gang crime and people driving on meth while you're trying to walk to the store, but understand it's not as simple as "lol go outside bro" in most parts of this world, there are even countries where you can't go outside at certain times, it's literally illegal. So not shocking to me at all, not even a tiny bit.

Ya know, like who the actor in the movie I’m watching is currently dating, or why was the tapeworm diet a real thing, or what areas have the highest amount of light/noise pollution. I want to know why screen time is so universally demonised. If I spent my day reading the newspaper, listening to my Walkman while jogging, doing some shopping, looking up some recipes, listening to the radio while washing up, doing a crossword, watching a movie or some tv, playing a video game, and reading a book before bed, nobody would give two shits. But if I do all those exact same things on my phone, suddenly that's the worst thing ever and I'm wasting my life.
@indecentthinking

I think its when its viewed as sonething like ‘just watching youtube’ all day on your phone, but also failing to take into account that youtube is both free and full of educational and helpful/insightful content. @@indecentthinking That is not true in fact getting up to do something for 30 mins when you are lying in bed but can't sleep is like the first recommended shrinks and docs recommend. The problem is the kind of content and the amount of it. Screentime I silent the issue its that most of what people spend doing on their phone is incredibly unproductive. Tv and video games are also included in screen time btw. It's a distraction and doesn't engage the brain the way reading, crosswords, jogging etc. Being outside instantly improves my mood instead of being on the internet which is 90% toxic discourse. Facebook/IG ads don't have settings to target people based on things like that. There's a lot that's against their policies, and things like diagnosis are definitely not one of the interests you can select. These ads are most likely targeted based on age/school situation, and then the more you engage with them, the more you'll get. Also, you can go into your settings and see all the topics you're being targeted based on, and you can eliminate the ones that you don't want to be targeted by. Facebook is absolutely scummy but there's a lot you can do to personalize your "experience" on the app, people just don't know about it.

I actually learned a lot about having grit in my college prep class. A huge part of making goals is never to make them seem like you're avoiding anything. It's more about adding something new to your life. The human mind can't work on restrictions but it can work on new experiences. So if you want to be healthier for example don't make it about cutting out candy, make it about trying a new vegetable with your dinner meal. Sure, it might not be something you end up enjoying but supplementing out the old stuff by just trying something healthier for your brain or body is really what will encourage you to keep going.

I feel like we miss TV actually feeling like TV and now that no one wants cable, streaming has to adjust.

You find the perfect place to put contour by sucking in your cheeks. It helps you see where the hollows of your cheeks naturally are and where the natural shadow would fall. All the people claiming to have ADHD because they don't want to admit they are just lazy are undermining the efforts of the people with real ADHD struggling with their day to day life. @@JonezBBQ Definitely. It's just the line between, "allowing yourself to enjoy technology, without getting addicted, and taking time away from it". And, "all technology is bad, and you are a bad person for enjoying it." Can be fuzzied pretty easily.

@@ii_caelus_ii oh no I understand that completely. Everything in moderation. The problem nowadays is just that everything is basically instantaneous gratification, and our rewards systems are skewed. And the effective way to counter that is to stop participating in that instantaneous gratification.

as someone who also used to be addicted to twitter, I had the same “but I don’t want to miss out on what everyone is talking about!” concern as Drew. The thing that helped the most was realizing, like, no- no, I *do* want to miss out actually because nothing good has ever been talked about on that hellsite

i used to have my feed carefully cultivated to only show me fanart and non-discourse fan posts, but ever since twt became barely held together with duct tape and i started getting bombarded with drama, i realized this is 100% true. i've gone from being on the app all day, to only spending short 10-15 minute bursts once or twice a day to check for new art since i know if i spend more time i end up just getting upset and frustrated.

@@mysideacc2770 my twt feed used to be more curated too. I would spend 2hours like Drew since all I ever encountered were cats and things I personally found funny (plus the occasional politics or brain dead takes) but now since Elon’s taken over, my feed has been littered with sports for some reason so I never use Twitter anymore.

For me it was rooted in the fear that if I stop, I’ll lose track of the conversation and be outcast. Not just that I’d be left behind, but that stopping looking at discourse for even a moment would make me slip up and commit faux pass. Internet discourse moves so fast, and once something is decided everyone likes to pretend that they knew it all along. To not know is to show vulnerability, and once you’re vulnerable you will be cannibalized by the colony. What helped me is remembering that a whole world exists outside internet discourse. Even if I commit internet faux pass, I’m still safe, I’m still here, I’m still breathing. Nothing material has changed, and I have a support system of people outside of niche internet communities who also exist and breath and live just like I do. Remembering this makes social media feel much less urgent, and curbs my desire to open and scroll.

Okay but these new videos are weirdly comforting, like it's not just me but the majority of us feel attached to our phones and we've all acknowledged it's bad but we still feel helpless. Kinda motivational ngl

I mean it’s kinda required to have a phone, for work, for personal life, and for enjoyment. And if you don’t you’ll be made fun of. No one should feel guilty for being attached to their phones, the only guilty people all the phone and app companies exploiting that attachment

What about just listening to a podcast or music or a video, while doing something else? I feel like that's sort of a good compromise for me where I don't feel under-stimulated OR as if I'm wasting my life. Seek out educational content and also do something productive IRL at the same time. On a side note, phones suck compared to using a laptop IMO, and I figure the only reason they got popular is because other people aren't on disability and actually need to leave their homes every day. Remember visiting actual websites on actual computers?

He described my experience and exact attachment to twitter to a T. I hate it and everyone is dumb and it just makes me angry but I can’t help but get sucked into the anger vortex. So I finally log out to cleanse my mind then am hit with this overwhelming fear that people are going to say something about me and I won’t be there to see it and defend myself. So I log back in and get sucked in all over again. It’s a disease lol.

When cutting out things like social media and screens in general, it’s definitely important to replace them with other things, like hanging out with friends, reading books, discovering or re-discovering a hobby, going outside, joining a club, something! If you don’t replace the digital entertainment, you’re just gonna feel sad and bored and go straight back to it then say “I don’t want to try giving up my phone again, cause it didn’t work and just made me want to go on it even more”.

Yes. I mentally devided the different uses of screens into "stuff that basically only makes me feel worse" and "stuff that is mostly cool, I just do it too much". The first category (instagram, Tumblr, Reddit) I just deleted entirely and never missed. But for the second category, I too have found that just doing other things is way more effective than cutting them down. Taking my time to bake something and making plans to play D&D in the evening cuts down my time on KZbin effortlessly, unlike "only x amount of time today" rules, which just stress me out.

The day I uninstalled Facebook years ago, my life kinda crumbled away, cuz I never noticed it was the most important thing I had. 80% of my socialization came from facebook, i spent the day on facebook groups being well known, but wasting time in meaningless arguments, caring about shit that didn't matter. Even so I'd rather have my current life than coming back to those wasted days, and I'm worried about the multiple twitter randos and reddit admins who spend their days stressed with those things
