These natural hair girls on KZbin are so full of shit tryna Act like natural hair journeys are not that deep. When she said , the she's had a more emotional fight than physical fight I felt that on deep level. I don't dwell on my hair as much no more but oh , I've been their I remember faking being sick to mom so that I wouldn't let me go 2 school with my natural hair. I remember Having to wear my natural hair at school I wore a hat and stayed in the consluors office so that no one saw me for the whole day. This video really spoke to me cause my hair looks exactly like hers too.

4b here, I gotta say, the people who are the hardest on our hair is our own folk. I went fully natural 13 years ago at a white college and the ONLY people being nasty were black folk. My lessons are: 1. stop watching videos with women who don't have your texture. You'll just get frustrated. 2. Learn how to flat twist. 3. Protective styling is your friend. 4. Haters get this 🖕🏾

@@TK-ix4cl you need to think deeper abt why black ppl look at it that way when most bp have it. Where did that come from? And white ppl are glad its not a weave or wig but in the co orperate world dont they look at it the same way as the black ppl you mentioned? Only one state im aware banned natural hair discrimination and there are plenty of instances throughout the years of them finding even braids and 4c hair in a puff unacceptable in schools, same goes for dread locks. Yes there are some white ppl ok with our hair, most arent and thats a fact, i dont appreciate that ur comment implies bp are more against 4c hair than the ppl who made us be that way, same goes for the op.
@itsnotmeitsyou7174 жыл бұрын
Well since most black are conditioned to see 4c hair as unpresentable, its only understandable some feel some type of way to see you embrace yours. That doesnt mean there werent white ppl at your college who didnt feel that way but some for the fear of being labelled racist would keep those opinions to themselves and their friends. Black ppl dont have to worry abt that so some will put their self loathing on full display. I dont think itll ever come to a point where most of us will become accepting of 4c hair just like so most of us still cant accept our features and darkskin. There is just too much conditioning and too many detached from our plight as a community.

Growing up in Africa where this type of hair is normal and then moving to another continent for whatever reason is such a different experience. Back home I'm very used to going out with my Afro and getting complimented on it so you can imagine my shock when I start getting weird looks because of something that used to be my pride. Granted, my hair is a lot like Danielle's; moisture just never seems to get into it, it's kinda short but not really but it's not long either, the only difference being that it's hella thick which is both an advantage and a disadvantage, my hair, for a long time, was just hair. I've always loved my hair because it was the standard and I have so much respect and admiration for African-American girls or black girls in general who have been taught either directly or indirectly through society that the hair they were born with and have no control over is some kind of an abomination. It's so awe-inspiring to see people ready to challenge the set standards and find their own place as who they are rather than who they should be. In other words, great video. This is amazing and I love it.

@@catalayatern2251 You are talking about South Africa which still has a large white population , which means you will still have white people as teachers and headmasters/ mistresses . I grew up in Zimbabwe ( right next door to South Africa ) in the 90s and there was still a large white population which has now decreased. If you went to a formerly whites only schools you would get white people opinions on your hair ; both in Secondary school and primary school my headmistress was white. In primary school the white headmistress preferred black girls to straighten their hair and that was part of the uniform ( Zimbabwean schools wear uniform) . In Secondary School I went to a Catholic school for A levels and the headmistress was a German nun but she was really chill and there was a list of black hairstyles that were allowed. You could wear it short and natural or relax it or cornrow it or get dreadlocks from form 1 to 4 but for those levels you could not add any extensions whatsoever to it or she it.Once you got to A level one of the privileges was that you could also get a weave or braids . I 've noticed that people from West Africa which had a minimal white settler population e.g Ghana or Nigeria tend to be more comfortable with their hair than people in Southern and East African countries where the white settler population was / for some is still huge and reluctant to leave after independence e.g South Africa, Kenya , Zimbabwe etc

I am engaged to a man who loves silky straight long hair. I have short 4C sparse density hair just like you.We had a conversation about my hair and he told me he would prefer me wearing my hair in silky straight human hair extensions. I told him he had better got used to my 4C hair because I would NEVER wear ‘human hair’ and the closest I could get to that is to braid with extensions. I typically don’t care what people think about my hair, but I felt quite hurt that the one man I was supposed to spend the rest of my life with, the one whose opinions actually matter to me would think this way. I did my thing and wore my natural hair the way I wanted it. Some months ago, I was on a video call with him. I had just taken down a 1month old braid and had my natural hair in an Afro. And the first thing he said when he saw me was “Babe you look beautiful. Your hair suits you so well”. He’s said it a lot of times afterwards. What this taught me is that first, you have to accept yourself and your hair, and wear it confidently. Once you’ve done that, those that matter would fall in line, those that don’t will get the hell out. It can be challenging to accept hair that is constantly being projected as ‘inferior’ to others, but once you get to that point, no one will be able to steal your thunder.

This video inspired me to start becoming comfortable with my hair. So when I take out my braids instead of washing it and immediately putting it back into braids I will finally try that twist out, and if it doesn't go well I'll probably put it back in braids but that'll be a first step and that's ok. We are very judgmental of what we perceive as hair that looks unkempt. I am guilty of that and I have 4c hair. It bothers me to no end to see matted clumped up lint filled hair on a woman especially 4c hair in that state of being.

Now don't get me wrong y'all, I'm trying my best to embrace its natural state, but I remember just casually saying, "My hair is crap" because sometimes natural hair can be frustrating. We don't know much about it because our previous people permed and altered our texture and didn't teach us HOW to care for our texture. Don't you think it would be NORMAL if we had proud ancestors to teach us how to care for it from a young age? You have PERFECT hair. It is beautiful and thick enough for your small head. Yeah, I agree that we were lied to about our hair. But I think still to this day, we have these "influencers" in our face with wigs, braids, and looser textures trying to tell us and show us what is "beautiful". That lie that the only beautiful healthy hair is long and thick has so many of us thinking, "Well, damn, I don't have that, so I ain't shit." So, we throw on wigs or braid up, all while neglecting our natural hair in the name of someone's else's beauty standards.

It’s difficult to love your hair when you try to love it through other peoples eyes. I went natural in the 90s. 4c hair when folks weren’t using that term. No KZbin. No IG. Barely covered by Essence magazine. Before celebrities would openly admit that they were ALL wearing weaves. My hair fell out at 18 and I refused to put back the creamy crack. I grew out my afro. Wore it in a puff. Was called a pickaninny in church by my old aunt. Was asked by other (halfway bald relaxed hair) disgusted church member if I was planning to keep my (glorious) afro puff. I looked at her awful hair and walked away. And I learned how to love my hair. And it was a fight every step of the way. When it was first growing out it was difficult to manage. I figured I got relaxers since I was 8 and my hair no longer trusted me and was putting up a fight. When I was 18 one of the facts about 4c hair that I used with folks when asked why (repeatedly) I went natural. Because my hair is a natural cooling system. It was designed to hold water close to my scalp to cool me. My 4c hair is doing its job. 4c hair is beautiful because it comes out of my scalp. At 40ish I have shaved my head. LOVED IT. No more 6-8 hour wash days!! Now I am wearing locks. It’s just hair. But it is also my love journey.
@Mitzi734 жыл бұрын
Interesting post. I am not black but I have been watching a lot of 4c hair videos and I have concluded that 4c girls have to think outside the box and do what makes them comfortable. If doing a silk press will give your hair routine a break and let you move on with your life then so be it. If wearing your hair naturally or in braids will let you focus on more important things then so be that too. Spending 6 hours on wash day doing moisture and twisting gives you the privilege of saying I need to do what is best for me.

You better not mean that “mixed” and wavy textures don’t/ shouldn’t have a place in the movement
@Kinglystateof4 жыл бұрын
Nobody said they don’t have a place. What I’m saying is the intended purpose for the natural hair movement began with non ambiguous black women wanting to celebrate the hair texture they were told wasn’t pretty. Then as years went on it became harder and harder to find these youtubers because the algorithm only showed mixed people who’s hair texture and styles ARENT attainable for most non ambiguous black people strictly because of texture. It then moved to products catering to looser textures and many black people starting their own businesses because the movement didn’t serve them anymore . Erasure is a marketing ploy that’s been happening since madame CJ Walker

Please read!!! 1. Never detangle outside of the shower. Only in the shower as you rinse out your conditioner no exceptions. This will cut your time down 85% 2. It you like sleeker styles, only style on STRETCHED hair. Otherwise our gorgeous 4c texture will over power it. That's why it doesn't look right. 3. Wash and cowash more often and get a water filter for your shower. Your moisture will get 70% better. 4. Over your texture? Blow dry it or put a protective style in. You just need a break. 5. Try a wash and go and fall in love with your texture. When done right it's much faster than all the 'outs' twist outs, braid outs, etc. Just like you may have to go through years of struggle to understand how to put on a wig and look good, you're hair is the same way. Hiding it constantly is just putting off the learning process. Once you got it you got it. Look up 22nd century woman, what lies beneath the weave, and caramel coils on KZbin for inspiration. 4c is GORGEOUS💕

"Hair is not just hair" absolutely facts. I don't like people saying that our hair is just hair and most of them are those who have hair that is socially acceptable. Hair tells a lot about us and our stories. Hair represents power in most African cultures (In my culture, when the parents die the children and very close family members must cut their hair and be bald. This represents that we are in distress and mourning. Even when a child reaches a year old they have to have their hair cut to let the 'real' hair grow out which shows growth in a child's life and success) , I am a tswana girl (a Bantu tribe) from South Africa and we have a saying that "A woman's hair is her crown that carries her beauty". It took a lot of strength and courage for us to finally appreciate our hair and nurture it because of how we have been brainwashed that our hair is ugly, unkept, dirty and embarassing. Hair carries our identity, history, culture and heritage. So if you're going to say my hair is just hair then you're striping off my identity. You're just taking away the meaning and value of my CROWN!!! Imagine going through so much because of your hair and then after finally fighting off that brainwashed mentality then someone out of nowhere tells you that your hair is just hair. Have they experienced the struggles of having to accept their hair? Have they ever felt embarassed of wearing their crown in public just because someone might come your way and call you in a racial slurs? No I don't think so that's why you think that my hair is just hair.

1. I think your hair is GORGEOUS. 😍 I think YOU are gorgeous. 2. I’ve been there. I went natural in 2010 (the first time) and the combination of trying to learn my hair while the people closest to me gave me the side eye, while trying to figure it all out can suck the fun out of it. It’s a journey. Once you find the products and techniques your hair likes, it gets better. 3. To see representation online I had to clear my history. Literally. All my browser history on social platforms and start over. Then I chose to consume images, videos, and publications that feed my spirit. I’ve realized that I needed to re-educate myself and seek out what I wanted to see...The algorithm is like a mirror into what you consume and put out....however, I do agree with you, 4c naturals aren’t as plentiful in tv or commercials (in their natural hair state anyway). I have a hair texture similar to yours, so I definitely seek to see women that hold similarities. 4. I’m happy that you keep trying even through your frustrations. *hugs*

i have 4a/4b hair and i’m still trying to learn to love it, in my school when i wore it natural it was seen as “unkept” and “messy” and when i wore box braids it’s seen as “fake hair” or “extensions”, people’s words started to impact me and i started to dislike my hair so i started to blow dry it because it was so hard to handle and so annoying and wasn’t like those other pretty girls with straight hair or pretty curly hair. i used a whole bunch of products and without realizing it my hair was breaking off piece by piece then in the summer my hair looked as if i did a big chop, it was so damaged and short but i didn’t care because to me my hair was ugly so i got box braids and let it grow then as soon as i took the box braids out i would blow dry and style and that was the same process for 1-2 years until i finally found black youtube channels explaining my hair explaining why i should love it explaining why it’s beautiful and should be beautiful to me, i wanted to start my natural hair journey but then school started and i had to get box braids, one of the guys i liked asked what i was doing to my hair and i told him and he said “oh it’ll look prettier if you straighten it or silk press it” “maybe it’ll make me like you” that hurt me a lot and i started to dislike my hair again, so i started blow drying and styling my hair AGAIN for a year straight. then i found a youtube channel talking about hair and i was wondering why my hair didn’t look like hers when we had the same hair type but hers was healthy and mine was curly at the root but then went straight at the ends. i know something needed to change so i put away my blow dryer and started my natural hair journey, i figured out my everything about my hair, got the right products (current still doing that now) and my hair is currently coming to a curly state, ive cut my damaged ends and my split ends and got a bonnet and just left it alone, currently my hair is semi healthy and i’m trying everything to get it thick again because it’s extremely thin but it’s got its curls. i’m learning everyday to love and value my hair because it’s mine. hair is never just hair, we go through mental and physical pain when going through our own journeys and it’s extremely difficult but we all get through it. time to time i do cry about my hair for hours because i’m just tired of it being so difficult and just “ugly” in my mind. i’m trying everyday to love and value my hair even more so it’ll get to it’s healthiest, fullest, best state. thanks for reading my natural hair journey ❤️.

When my hair was relaxed, it was bra strap length, I was always praised for "good hair" even by the stylists who put the chemicals on my head. The upkeep was stressful and damaging so I went natural. The "good hair" comments stopped. OTHER PEOPLE were more upset than I was that it was gone.

I used to keep my hair in box-braids and I wouldn’t tell people it wasn’t my natural hair because I was embarrassed. Then one day I started wearing my natural hair and one of my friend’s parents was upset that I undid the braids and another person saw a picture of me with my braids and said “That doesn’t look like you. That looks like your hot sister.” and it upset me, but I decided I wasn’t going to tell me what did an didnt look good on me. When someone tells me I need to do my hair I get mad and I tell them so shut up.

@@Rose-vp5gn Wow! The nerve of some people. I'm sorry people were behaving so rudely, I truly don't understand why people take so much stock in other people's hair. You are so right about not being able to find real 4c hair videos on KZbin. I have put in the search bar of KZbin real 4c hair, true 4c hair, 4c hair and everything but that will come up. Normally curly hair girls will come up. Try to watch videos with hair like yours IF you can find them. I have felt everything that you said in this video through these 10yrs of being natural. I have resulted to just wearing mini twists or my fro because my hair won't do a twist out, nor a braid out. It took a long time to start embracing what I have and the stares. Hang in there everyone!

We have the same hair. Two things. I know you did not solicit advice but hear me out. Green Beauty’s channel has taught me more about what it means to have hair than my own mother. You are amazing. I’m 55. I would often feel ashamed coming out of the hairdresser’s sure that my hair was a disappointment and inconvenience to the stylist. They would tell me as much, huffing and puffing at what my hair couldn’t do. I was embarrassed to present this ‘less than’ ideal and deign to have them style it like ‘good hair’. My hair got thinner and thinner after all those full relaxers that damaged my hair all those years. Been natural about 6 years. No length. Age thinning at crown. Starting a loc journey almost as a final try!! Love the look of locs, the freedom, the pride, but also I’m doing it praying for the length to develop as some kind of payback. A ‘so there! I did it!’ to all those stylists and long-haired friends that looked down on my hair or me and my hair orjust me because of my hair. Being confident with my hair out , has never been easy. Also, we have pretty much the same hair, so I DEEPLY appreciate your channel. Ppl can do what they want with their hair, but honestly seeing so many women with 4C (thin) hair texturizing it, or relaxing it, or generally getting fed up with it is so discouraging. And for some people it really is a convenience thing, but it's just hard to feel like NO ONE wants the hair you have and people would run away from it if they had the chance. It's also hard to just consider that I have to spend so much emotional energy on not hating a part of myself when there is literally nothing wrong with it other than how other people see it. It makes sense in context but it also makes no fucking sense at all. Tiring.

"Oh no, I got the hard one." That was my existence during the first 6-9 months of my natural hair journey. I have combination type 4 hair, 4a in the back, 4b on the sides, and 4c in the front and crown. In an effort to dodge the realization of "Oh no, I got the hard one", I cut the entire front of my hair off 6 months after the initial big chop, but left the rest in tact. My line of thought was 'clearly I must have done something wrong if most of my hair has defined curls and coils while the front is undefined tiny z-patterns'. But no, my 4c hair was perfectly ok and healthy, "I" just didn't want to accept 0 definition on top of my head. Luckily this hair journey has taken me to a much better, much more healthy place as I enter my 4th year of being natural. I love my coarse low definition 4c, and I love to **maintain** it. Not "manage" it, not "deal with it", MAINTAIN it. Keep it thriving, and healthy, and happy. And as I continue to learn how to style her, she continues to grow not only volume, but in length as well. Fluffnugget is going to do the same in time, remember you just had a major trim a few months ago. She's already thriving, just give her time to expand.

I can totally relate to "Oh no. I got the hard one." I did my first big chop in 2008 before all the naturals popper up on KZbin and there were a ton of hair products aimed at 4c hair. I was shocked by how kinky my hair was. It was difficult to detangle. It was difficult to keep moisturized and my ends split, fairy knots and all. All the commercials featured what is now identified as 3B/3C hair on lighter-skinned women. I spent a lot of time trying to stretch my hair. I did a texturizer once out of frustration and cut it all off less than a week later. I had to embrace my texture as it was and not how I imagined it to be. I watched only 4C hair tutorials. I used products with the intention of maintaining my healthy hair without stretching or twisting all the time. I didn't lay my edges for a while. It was a journey for sure.
