Good video. I have been playing Pokemon ROM hacks for a few years now and they are what has kept my love of Pokemon alive after getting bored with commercial releases.

Thank you for the nice comment! :) I think that's going to be the case now for me moving forward. Official releases of Pokemon games have definitely not been up to par lately (and haven't been for a while) yet games like Pokemon Unbound has reignited the magic I felt playing through games like Fire Red and HeartGold for the first time.

Im currently playing Mytic Silver Pokemon on Drastic and Pokemon Unbound on my GBA emulator. The level cap is really good on both of this rom hack.
@Dutchess54 ай бұрын
Never heard of MSP! I'll have to check that out. :) I was thinking of trying the level cap on Unbound just to see how it works. I'm a little confused on how it works, though. Does it just lock the trainers and gym leaders at a specific level so as to not become too over powered?
@warlopama57414 ай бұрын
@@Dutchess5 the level cap is only applied to your team. The gyms and npc still have their respective level. your weak pokemons on the team still get the benefit of xp share but the ones who reach the cap level will just get 1xp but it wont level up any further unless you get a new badge. 🙂

1:08 Literally the start of every Creepypasta ever 😂 The dreaded car boot sales, the unlabeled cartridge, not being told what game it is... Great video! Almost primary on front of the game itself to me, I loved hearing about your methodology. Giving me huuuge nostalgic vibes to those old AVGN episodes of the CD-i and the 32X. Plus glad to see a nice briefing about Virtual Console injections! With the recent closure on 3DS and Wii U official support, the more the modding scene gets discussed, the better. Unbound is indeed a great game! it's personally not my favorite romhack I've played from Pokemon, but it is easily in the top 5 for sure. It does do a great job of addressing difficulty levels which is nice! And an EXP Share you can toggle should be a requirement for every Pokémon fangame anyone makes, especially now that the time has come and gone where Game Freak themselves floated the concept. Glad you're feeling better! 😊
@Dutchess54 ай бұрын
Oh my goodness, I never thought of it that way until you mentioned it! But it is a very creepypasta set up 😂 Though I can confirm that the game is definitely not one! I played a decent hour and nothing strange happened, so I think we're in the clear lol. Thanks for your kind words! 😊 And yes, I couldn't agree more. It's unfortunate how quickly Nintendo shut down support for the 3DS and Wii U, especially considering how many 3DS games were made pretty recently, like Ultra Sun and Moon, I believe. The modders within the community have been doing a fantastic job keeping the system alive through cfw, and I definitely wanted to do my part in showing credit where credit is due. 😊 Oooo, now I'm curious as to which ROM hack is your favorite. 👀 You can't just leave us in the dark here, haha! 😂 And thank you! I'm happy that I'm feeling better, too. 😆

@@Dutchess5 I do like the romhacks that completely reinvent the wheel and add huge overhauled features! One I really liked in that vein is Emerald Rogue - which is just a roguelike take on Pokemon where you play through randomized routes designed after routes from the first 5 generations of games, and catch and maintain a team that will permanently leave the team when KO'd. The level curve is blindingly fast and the focus is so primarily on the 'boss' fights that it almost gives me Pokemon Stadium vibes. Very fun time, and a good time-waster if it can be played on the phone or flashed to a cart. Another I always really liked is Pokemon Orange, which was recently revived and completed after a long hiatus. It's modeled after Pokemon Gold/Silver and takes place in the Orange Islands! I never liked the romhacks that draw direct events from the anime personally, but this scores a nice balance of being based on a location unique to the anime but still largely a unique campaign. You even get to see and can catch the unique Orange Island-formed Pokemon, sort of a precursor to regional forms. There's also two versions of the game, with or without the physical/special split! Lastly I like the sort of games that feel like they could have been released by Game Freak themselves in their prime. Hard to describe what makes them feel that way, just a certain "je ne sais quoi" with the level curve and pacing without feeling too easy or too cheap, involvement of an evil team that eventually takes center stage in the last third of the game, no overdeveloped plot or an attempt to make Pokemon mature... one of or all of these things fill the quota maybe! And for me I found both Pokemon Gaia and Pokemon Glazed both fit the bill really well; while not perfect or the most ambitious, they really felt like games Game Freak could have released in 2005 if Emerald wasn't planned. I'd recommend any of these, they were always among my favorite! And for more the fangame route rather than romhacks, I'll always recommend PokeWilds... which is just a sandbox survival game but built in an open-sourced version of the Gold/Silver/Crystal engine. Full crafting system, build your own base or settlement - pretty amazing stuff!

I am a *huge* fan of the rom hacking scene; I'm over at RHDN just about every day. Sometime around the Seventh Generation, when game quality was taking a nosedive, and the indie scene was just getting started, rom hacks were just about all I was playing that was "new", and what people have been able to do with games since then has only gotten more impressive and creative.
@Dutchess54 ай бұрын
Couldn't agree more! The fact that ordinary people--who are most likely not even in the video game industry in any shape or form--can put together a coherent game with a phenomenal story is beyond amazing. It puts big companies like GameFreak to shame! Same with something like Stardew Valley. It was all made by one person: Eric Barone. It's phenomenal the extent of human creativity. :)

@@Dutchess5 This is exactly why I keep urging people to stop trudging through franchises that have lost their way. "Final Fantasy sucks now; I miss the class system!" Go play Octopath Traveler. "ActRaiser Renaissance was a huge disappointment!" Go play Smelter. "They haven't put out a Mega Man game in ages!" There are about infinity BILLION hacks out there; start with Anandastoon's work. If there's something you miss, chances are that someone in the rom hacking and/or indie scene misses it, too!

@@Dutchess5 Hmm in that case I'll try and recommend a few you hopefully haven't heard of before. 😁 Pokemon Crown - which is a hack for Fire Red so you should be able to play it on 3DS. It has an original story that changes a lot of things from normal pokemon games, new region and their own auto-chess like battle mechanic. Very unique and refreshing experience that is easy to pick up with great art and concepts, but it isn't finished yet. Pokemon Reborn - It has been my favorite for years so I'm a bit biased towards sharing it hahah. It has a great original soundtrack and most battle themes are made by glitchxcity 😎 I't has it's own region, and story which is more catered towards adults with darker themes. There's also 18 gyms so it is a very long game and also very, very tough. But it is created with RPG maker so I'm not sure if its possible to play with the custom firmware on your 3DS. There surely are more than enough ROM hacks with originality and spice to them that the official releases aren't able to produce so I believe you won't be bored with them 😁

Great Video! I love romhacks but have only started to play Pokemon ones rather recently (currently part way through Unbound atm). I got into romhacks with Fire Emblem and I would strongly checking out FE8 romhacks such as Drums of War and Shackled Power. There's even a Pokemon/FE crossover one called Pokeemblem that revamps classic pokemon to have FE style combat.

The only modern pokemon game I bought and had fun with was The Legend of Arceus. The rest of what Gamefreak has been producing (from Gen 8 to the present) is a spec of dirt in my eyes. I just learned about people making their own games for the GBA up until this day and I'm blown away by their dedication and passion for these forms of art. Really thankful for these passionate creators of pokemon fan games because Gamefreak could never.

It's not the ROM hacks that interested me, it's the actual fan games. Most seem to be made with RPGM using a resource kit known as "Pokemon Essentials". I'm nearing 100% of Pokemon Sunday currently and honestly the guy who designed this should try to make his own monster trainer IP. Anode Heart is already a game with a creator that has such a background.

I am deeply confused by the penetration of the ideal of protecting big-corporate IP in a society that so constantly criticises capitalism. It doesn’t make any sense at all
@ValoZilla4 ай бұрын
Yeah thumbnail is not understandable by people who aren’t already knowledgeable with Pokémon fan games. I found myself confused at the thumbnail to what you were comparing, and I still am tbh. I think it would be a good idea to put the word “original,” and “fan-made” on the top of the respective sides if that is supposed to be the comparison. And to switch up the picture of each side to showcase the differences much more, because to me it just looks like 2 Pokémon maps. The title and content is good though, although I think you should consider an audience who isn’t as knowledgeable with Pokémon or fan games.
@Dutchess54 ай бұрын
Thanks for your candid comment! Yeah, I was originally going to go with putting "original" and "fanmade" on the opposite ends of the thumbnail, but didn't know if that would look too cluttered or not. I even had it saved as an option lol. I'm glad you mentioned it, though because after reading your comment, I decided to go with it after all.
