Hi Michelle, I like your videos!! I have a very specific question. I’ve been following this TikToker who shares what she eats in a day at these cool food spots (local & chain). People have criticized her for it but I don’t see what she did wrong and she doesn’t say anything hateful towards anyone. A few people duet/stitch her videos saying they have an issue with her content. I saw another lovely TikToker who shares what they (they use they/them pronouns!) eat in a day and also got hate. The first one is a average sized girl and the other person is on the “bigger” side. Both get hate for different reasons, I think the second TikToker gets hate because they’re “bigger” and caption their vids as “as someone who isn’t trying to lose weight” or something but they aren’t “unhealthy looking”. I wanna know what you think. I’m not trying to push hate towards any of the people mentioned, nor do I personally see an issue with either people sharing what they eat.

As a disabled teenager I found the body positivity community online and I ballooned up to 235lbs. I thought I was loving myself by eating everything I wanted all the time. Meanwhile, my autoimmune disease got worse and I was miserable and having constant flare ups and pain. I was on over 15 medications by 25. I am now 33 and I have managed to lose 100lbs even with rheumatoid arthritis, Scoliosis and PCOS. I used to be one of those people who believed I was just genetically fat, but I was seriously delusional about my diet. I didn’t eat a lot, but what I did eat was high calorie crappy food and way bigger portions to make up for the lack of time to eat. My relationship with food was a disaster and my relationship to exercise was even worse. I had to overcome 30+ years of fear of exercising because of chronic pain. Taking charge of my life was the best decision I could’ve ever made though. I am now down to 2 medications and went from a size 18 to a size 6. I feel younger than I ever have and my rheumatologist is shocked at my progress. I had to learn to love myself enough to do this for me. You were part of my inspiration to leave “body positivity” so thank you. All of those friends abandoned me, but I am happy I chose myself over a life of delusion just to keep those “friends”. Life can get better! Change is possible! 💗

As a black woman, I’m expected to have more hips and thick thighs because “that’s how our bodies are”. I’m so sick of people like Lizzo just saying that’s the way you’re supposed to be. Thank you for saying that! I know peoples bodies are not the same and some retain more weight than others, but we’re not meant to be severely overweight. Obesity shouldn’t be this big of an issue for so many people in this country, let alone us black folks. At risk for hypertension, we should be doing everything in our power to live healthy lives! I’m not saying we can’t pig out every once in a while, but moderation needs to be implemented.

seems like only americans seem to push down that idea onto black women (well, mostly black americans). i have yet to see europeans, asians, latinos, or even continental africans obsessing over the thick body type. if you go to south sudan, people there tend to be very tall and thin. most of eastern africa seems to be pretty tall and lean. i was quite surprised as a non-black person that black women with thin figures were ridiculed by their peers and family growing up. honestly, any body type should not be shamed as long as the person is in a healthy weight range.

I am a women of color as well, and I am also so sick and tired of the fat activists always patronizing women of color like we are too poor, dumb, and lazy to speak for ourselves. Many act like they are the voice for the " marginalized" when actually, many only care about themselves, and using women of color as a pawn. I can speak for myself. As far as Lizzo, she cannot have it both ways. I TOTALLY understand she wants to be known for more than just her body. But, that is also what she ALWAYS puts front and center. Her body is what she spends a lot of time talking about. If you talk about it, others will too. Also, there is no safe space on the internet. If you want peace, get off of social media

It's very usual than when our cultures see a skinny child they immediately think they're sick or something and that a fatty kid/teen is "strong and healthy". When I was like 6-7 I was a normal size kid but because my parents thought I wasn't eating enough they started giving me vitamins so I could get hungrier. I just can tell you I've never been able to recover a normal size and just know when it went out of control with over 60 lbs to loose, they thought that I was ok and healthy

Lizzo is a great example of too much good is bad. If she is genuinely eating a health, holistic diet, she is simply eating way too much of it. As Michelle has said before, peanut butter is healthy but extremely calorically dense. I can't keep peanut butter in my home because it is a trigger for my binge eating disorder. It's a great source of protein, fiber, and healthy fat, but i can't eat just one or two tablespoons of it and i don't think most people do. I also love avocado, but it's 200+ calories in just one of them so i rarely eat them. There are plenty of nutrient rich foods that are very high in calories. A lot of people don't consider that.

I really don't care how fat people look. I'm on my own weight loss journey from being obese, 70lbs down! So like, I won't shame fat women or anything, but if you're obese and think you're eating healthy, you should probably start tracking your food/calories just to confirm that's the case. I thought I was eating pretty healthy, myself, and was proven wrong. The thing is, for a lot of people health and beauty come together, so they see someone unhealthy and can't see their beauty beyond it.

I think it's great that we are at a place where we are a little more considerate and don't use someone's body as a way to shame them. To me, body positivity should be about being kinder to ourselves and not falling into ED tendencies. Yes, no two bodies look the same, so we shouldn't beat ourselves up for not looking like someone else. With that being said, we shouldn't forget to try and lead healthy lifestyles by eating well and exercising daily. Saying, "being obese is healthy " is both false and not helping anyone.

To me, body positivity should be about accepting the parts of your body that you dislike, or that are different, but cannot be changed. For example, amputations, disabilities, scarring, cellulite, stretch marks etc. I think its dangerous for it to include weight extremes, such as being unhealthily overweight or underweight. These things damage your health, and do not need to be "accepted", because they are not permanent states of being. I dont think these things deserve hate at all, and shaming doesnt help anyone, but spreading the message to "love yourself no matter what" in reference to weight feels like enabling someone's unhealthy habits. If body positivity is about being kinder to yourself, that shouldn't be limited to just mental health (aka, not putting yourself down and feeling ashamed because of your body), but also include physical health (eating the right things and looking after your body).

@@Raya-ir4tm I do think that in certain cases she is looking for that praise, but maybe she just doens't want people to talk about it because it hurts her feelings? Like ik it's her brand and stuff but maybe she's just trying to make herself feel better because of all the hate she gets. I'm overweight too, like, severely, and I know i don't eat as healthy as i should, adn I need to work out but she's just spreading body positivity, like instead of hating my body and the way i look, I can focus on becoming more healthy and loving and embracing my body along the way. She's literally just saying "don't hate yourself even if you're "fat", you can still be beautiful" and it's not like "everyone should be obese and if you aren't then you're ugly too" no, that's literally also bodyshaming, she's just saying love your body and if you don't than look for healthy ways you can change that. I also struggle with restricting/binging/purging behaviour because of being unhappy with my body and it has made my life a living hell, so unless you are directly part of her life you don't get to have these opinions and say mean things, people literally just act hateful in the comments for attention, so they're no better than she is if that's what your claiming she's doing. I think if everyone was just respectful and kind and uplifting the world and internet would be a much better place. Maybe she is trying to take control of her weight and body and she's just struggling because it's actually difficult? Why do people have to be so mean, instead they could be kind, kindness goes a long way. Also i dont think it's her wanting people to worship her body, I think she's just calling bitchy people on their bitchy behaveviours and they're getting mad cause they got called out and can't be bitchy to everyone who isn't "perfect". Which is a term defined by society and doesn't even hold a true meaning at this point.

Lizzo's 90 minutes daily active performance is cute but let me tell you I'm a cycle courier, cycling 9 hours a day, 5 days a week (it's been like this for 16 years) and I put on weight fairly quickly if I don't look at what I eat. I don't eat fast food but also I live in Europe and eating fast food just wasn't the norm for me growing up so I don't even crave it. She doesn't want to be "thin" so she shouldn't be mad just because people have eyes. Yeah, exercise isn't really going to make you lose weight. Being generous and assuming her 90 minutes of activity burns 500 calories it's easy to eat that and since she doesn't watch what she eats she's probably always in a surplus. She orders takeout a lot and restaurant is made to be delicious not healthy. Vegetarian, vegan, omnivore it's all loaded with sugar and oils, even from nice restaurants to make it more appealing to taste buds and basically fun to eat. She probably eats an insane amount of calories everyday.

Its obviously awful when people make rude comments on her videos for no reason but the way she looks. However, when she talks about eating "clean" and being "holistically conscious" when she literally shows her meals, its clear that she's either lying or really uneducated. She literally has shown herself preparing frozen food (meant to be baked) by deep frying it in cold oil then slathering it in butter. Frozen foods are usually already deep fried 😭 and she still quadrupled the amount of oil in her meal. No matter how much she exercises, her liver and gallbladder won't be able to keep up (she already has gerd which is a bad sign), and she still has the nerve to claim to be healthy. It's not a moral failing to be unhealthy but body positivity folks cling on to the "healthy" label for dear life as if it'll actually help when their weight catches up to them. Kinda sad.

I'm 29, started at 242lbs in April and now today June 12th I weigh 219lbs. I've always struggled with binge-eating and consistency, like, do good for one week and then binge and have a horrible week. The last few months I've been 100% consistent and haven't binged once. Always in a calorie deficit, eating healthy, small portions (feel full faster), and doing some type of exercise every day. Love to walk now. Somedays I get 10k steps which before I didn't think would be possible for me. It encourages me to keep going, and watching videos like yours is so helpful. Don't understand fat acceptance at all... and I've been obese most of my life. The pain you feel from carrying excess weight is freaking awful, and if an obese person says differently they have to be lying to themselves. People like Lizzo who preach being obese is 'natural' and 'there's nothing wrong with it' are kinda insane. They have zero common sense... even if you put science and research aside, it is simply common sense that having more weight on your body will ultimately hurt you. Even just losing 22lbs (so far) I've noticed great changes. Feel better. Can move more. My legs feel stronger from exercising. Etc.

If she didn't constantly make her body the focal point. Then it wouldn't constantly be the focal point like it is. She continually does things that explicitly yell "look at me" to everyone. So congrats, you got everyone to look and surprise, surprise. Not everyone likes it or how you decide to go about it. How do you lead with something, then be surprised when people do the same.

Her doing that has nothing to do with her weight though, at least when it comes to her, the thing about her weight comes from the people shaming her for what she has tried changing but just can’t, some bodies are like that and people tend not to believe that unless they see it for themselves. You act like just because she is bigger that means she shouldn’t wear similar outfits to what other women in her same profession wear that’s literally all she’s doing and this is your response. You’re making it about her body not her lol she is retaliating for people shaming for body, that is literally it, if you don’t like her body don’t look. That’s that.

@@itzTeTe Oh piss all the way off with this garbage. She continually does things that draws attention to her body. She let's you know she is big and proud. You trying to argue otherwise is asinine. Also ain't it convenient that every time someone's weight comes into question. They are somehow the very small number of people, who suffer from actual natural weight issues? Ain't it also funny that so many others seem to suffer from the same thing. Right up until they loose weight. So weird that. And I don't act like anything. She's free to dress and behave however she wants. But this delusion that you and so many others else seems to suffer from. That that somehow shields her, you, or anyone else, from people not reacting positive towards it. Is stupid. Oh and "That's that."

Lizzo has a huge platform. Imagine how many people she could inspire if she went on a long term, healthy, no-fad weightloss journey and shared it every step of the way. She would do so much good for the obese community. I wish she would use her platform wisely.

Holistic: Characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of an illness. I don't think Lizzo is holistic based on its definition. Like, at all. When it comes to social factors, she's the main factor keeping her socially subjugated to fatness/obesity. Her fans/following do this as well by living vicariously through her. She hyperfocuses on the symptoms and consequences of being overweight rather than what caused her to get to and remain at that weight. She is nowhere near holistic. She just wants to use a word that isn't "loaded" as to not piss off her unhealthy fanbase.

it really does scare me. i feel that while it really sucks that yes, overweight people experience the policing of their bodies which is really crappy, the same fans who are in the overweight range and in the FA people are also the ones policing her for her choices. i feel that as much as she does spread misinfo about health, she's also pressured to keep up such an image. i do feel bad for her for the pressure she has and hope there's gonna be change for herself, first and foremost

Then I actually weighed out a portion of rice, I was eating about 3 portions in one sitting, just getting fatter and fatter wondering why. I love working out too and max out the weight available to lift at my gym and did a ton of cardio but you can’t out work eating a ton of food at crazy times of day. When I think Lizzo, unfortunately the image of fishnet garbage bags come to mind. It’s only because they did her so wrong in that jlo movie and the fenty fashion show. There’s way better lingerie out there for us big folks.

This BMI is considered obese. People with obesity have increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and other health conditions. Waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, and body fat percentage measurements can provide a more complete picture of any health risks. A person should consult with their healthcare provider and consider making lifestyle changes through healthy eating and fitness to improve their health indicators

You probably hear this all the time but I just wanted you to know that you literally saved my life. I hated who i was and i started to notice and remember that junk food made me feel like junk but i couldn't stop eating it and fast food. Anyways i ran into your video on binge eating disorders and Idk if i had that but I felt all the tips you gave in my soul. That was back in January of this year. I decided to go on a slight calorie deficit and cut fast food and junk until i could have control over it. Now I am done to 180 to 190. I get so much motivation from watching your videos. No excuses kinda attitude was what i needed to get my butt moving and dedicated to bettering myself. Anyways I just love your videos and we have a similar personality.

I know this is not the topic of the video but People really forget that it’s not about what you eat, it’s about how much you eat, and if you were a fat child because of family culture then that’s years of stretching your stomach out which means you need a massive amount of food to keep you full, that coupled with intuitive eating is a recipe for obesity.

personally, I think Lizzo's body looks great. but it's really not about looks, it *is* about health. if she wants to keep being able to move around on stage like she says, she needs to change. the extra weight will put stress on her joints and soon it'll be painful to move. not to mention breathing problems. I believe in beauty at every size, but health at every size is bs. it can have permanent changes on your body, even if you do lose weight. better not to get to that point in the first place. so many ppl from 600lb life that still waddle around even after they've lost tremendous amounts of weight and had skin removal. one girl's (Lupe I think) leg completely turned outward and it never went back to normal after. I think Lizzo's still at a point where she can change without having those permanent effects. she should take advantage of her active nature and age.

Then i decided to visit my doctor. I got my labs, i was horrified and i thought if this keeps up i will be dead soon. I have been paying around $100 a month for medications and thankfuly I have an insurance ( from my wife's company ) to cover it ( it usually cost around $150 per month for the laboratory work up ) i leave in the philippines and i know that this prices would go up significantly in the states.
