I know right. Say what you will about The Vampire Diaries (which admittedly has a lot of stuff that could be said about it.) but at least once they left high school, that was it. It was all college stuff from then on out. Even the spinoff Legacies, which takes place in a high school, is at least a different high school. Instead of the old mundane one, now it's at the Salvatore house which got converted into a high school for supernaturals. So it feels less like retreading the same old ground, and more of a reimagining. As if (cue dramatic drum roll) effort was put in.

You WANT the shows you like to end early, because the longer they go on, the harder it is to keep the show within the realm of reality (or, within the reality the show created for itself), the harder it is to keep the characters both consistent and still developing, because you want them to have character arcs but if you don't know how long the show will be you might have to undo the work you already did (I see you, Grey's Anatomy), the harder it is to keep from flanderizing your main cast (See: Ron Swanson being unable to eat a banana at the end of Parks and Rec, or Dwight shooting Stanley with bull tranquilizers at the end of The Office), and it is harder to give the show a satisfying finale (I see you, How I Met Your Mother and Game of Thrones)... I mean, there's a reason why for long series, most people tend to prefer seasons 1-4, maybe 1-5 (with the Parks and Rec exception where most people hate Season 1 the most). I don't deny Riverdale got to the "this should have ended a long time ago" faster than most shows, but all shows have a shelf life, even great ones, and it is better to end the show at/before they hit it than to keep it running. I mean, the American version of The Office is widely regarded as one of the greatest sitcoms ever written, but most people agree it went downhill after Michael left. Obviously being a long show doesn't make it bad, but there tends to be a dip in quality after a certain point. (I want to say, I mean no hate towards any of the shows I listed. I've watched all of them except for GOT, although I gave up on Grey's Anatomy after around season 8)
