I believe whirlpool calls them a “heat anticipator” on the 3387134 155° operating thermostat. It’s a little heater that tricks the thermostat. I could be wrong though I believe I heard one of the old timers say that one time

@LAapplianceguy is correct. When using a setting lower than the highest heat setting, power is applied to the resistor and causes it to heat up. When the resistor heats up the thermostat is “tricked” into cycling at a lower temperature allowing the dryer to have Medium and Low heat settings.
