I Don’t Know What To Say - What To Do When Your Mind Goes Blank During Conversations

Social Anxiety Advice

9 жыл бұрын

When I talk with people who have social anxiety they often tell me, “Andre, I don’t know what to say. My mind goes blank during conversations. What should I do?” Since this seems to be quite a problem, I’ve decided to record a video that shows you what to do to get rid of this problem.
First of, you need to realize that this happens to everyone and more importantly, you need to realize that it’s not your responsibility to fill in the gaps. Awkward pauses in conversations don’t necessarily need to be filled by you.
You’re not the only one involved in conversation and it takes at least two people to have a conversation (except when you’re talking to yourself). That other person also needs to actively participate and do his or her best to keep the conversation going.
Realizing this should help you feel more at ease during conversations because the pressure to prevent the pauses isn’t just on you anymore.
Why is this so important?
Well, I’ve found out that your mind goes blank during conversations for two reasons. One is that you’re not comfortable around people you’re talking to and the other one is that you simply don’t have anything to say. The good thing is that you can take care of both reasons pretty easily.
There are obviously many reasons how to calm yourself down and get more relaxed around other people.
You could practice a simple breathing technique that I’ve described pretty thoroughly in one of my episodes of Social Anxiety Advice podcast. You can listen to it here:
socialanxietyadvice.com/how-to...
Another thing you could do to calm down is practice a special EFT technique during the moment of anxiety. It will help you relax almost instantly. It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to lower the level of anxiety.
Again, you can find out more about this technique by following the link above.
Please understand that practicing these techniques won’t instantly turn you into a super confident person with great social skills.
These techniques are only meant to help you calm down so your brain can start working properly again and you can get the conversation going again.
For long-term results you will have to dig deeper and find out the reasons why you feel uncomfortable around other people in the first place. Then you’ll have to work on eliminating these reasons.
Now, let’s move on to the next reason why your mind goes blank.
It’s hard to be sociable when you have social phobia. It keeps you away from situations that could help you develop your social skills. It keeps you away from living your life fully because it wants to protect you from getting yourself hurt and embarrassed.
Obviously this doesn’t help when you need to talk with other people.
When you have no life it’s hard to be sociable because you have nothing interesting to say. It’s hard to be the life of the party if you’ve got nothing interesting going on in your life.
The solution lies in living a more interesting life.
Find yourself some fascinating or impressive hobbies. This will give you something to talk about.
And more importantly, become interested in other people. Become interested in what they have to say. This way you will eventually develop your social skills and you won’t have to deal with awkward pauses anymore.
If you have any questions about this topic you can leave them in the comments’ section here:
socialanxietyadvice.com/i-dont...
If you would like to know more about overcoming social anxiety disorder and building social skills, feel free to visit my website here:

I think most of my problem is I've always thought, growing up listening to people talk, and later into adulthood, that 95% of what "normal" people talk about, isn't worth talking about to begin with... so it makes it hard know what is socially acceptable to these types.

@vl2663
@vl2663 4 жыл бұрын
DUUUDE LMAO you seriously just described my exact problem with talking to people too. Before my social anxiety had gotten too bad I had never been able to make friends and talk to people my age because I thought that most of the stuff people talked about was dumb, trivial, or I just couldn’t relate to it. I didn’t end up making friends until I started to dumb myself down and talk the way others do. Pretty sad but that was the only way people could accept me. Most of the time people don’t like talking about deeper or important things or things that are too different than what they’re used to, they just wanna talk about drama, gossip, or material/superficial things. I think that a lot of people live in this bubble to protect themselves from the reality of the world, but people like us face the truth and realize there are far more important things than talking about what Beyoncé wore to the Met Gala. And it’s not to say that I or anyone else with this problem think we’re better than everyone else, it’s just that we have different mentalities and ways of seeing the world than “normal” people do. Dumbing yourself down and focusing on trivial things makes you appear normal and be acceptable in society unfortunately

Most of my life I have never known what to say, even if I'm not in a social situation. People talk normally about other people or social situations that I have no opinion on. I just have never had ideas what to say to people, unfortunately most advice is how to speak not what to say.

ojjamajjasajja say something that you're passionate about, very interested in, and believe to be absolute true that you can back up and explain when/if needed to. Peoples interests are deeply increased when people speak about things passionate and/or are passionate about. It develops a subliminal sense of curiousity and your explanation can deepen their sense of wonder towards what you are saying; thus, inviting questions and deeper discussions and even relatability. And when you say something that is fruit of a core belief, you say it more strongly and show a sense of integrity in what you say. You won't have to second think this thought or worry about what the other person says. All of this is of course with respects to the other people. Say what you mean and mean what you say. And rather than just talking about anything and hoping for a smooth conversation, seek to get more out of it and understand the person/ where they are coming from. Purpose always reveals itself in the end. If you are talking just to talk, it's obvious. But If you're in a conversation because you want to know them more or know more about them or because you actually genuinely care about what is being said, etc, it will show and in the end you will both leave the conversation with more than empty words with no meaning and a bumpy broken road of misunderstanding and white noise. Have a purpose and meaning in every conversation you have that is not in vanity and you will see that that opens more doors than merely just talking . Much love.

2 Main Focal Points 1. Blurt out whats on your mind. (Express how you feel) Dont be afraid to disagree with someone this keeps a convo going. If you feel like your saying something irrelevant or weird than note not to repeat the mistake. This will slowly increase your charismatic skills. Put yourself out there, laugh have fun, and you will learn and grow as a speaker. 2. If you dont know what to say flip the switch. Make the other person talk. How? Ask then questions. Whats their interests? Goals? Have they ever tried (activities)? How are they feeling? Hows there day going? This is where your ears come into play. Actively listen, Face them you can move your eyes, and nod but try not to move your head. By listening your relationship will build with that person. And by listening you will most likely learn a thing or two. Hope this helped.

the only way i know to talk is to mimic the way people talk in said year. i try to adapt my way of talking to the person im talking to, which is fine. but even so, i feel so bothered saying the same thing over and over again. only mimicking and never saying something interesting of my own because my mind is always so blank and empty. i believe one one of the roots is the fact that i don't talk to people too often, and always on the same comforting subject and nothing else. another root of the problem could be my feeling of guilt to even speak. afraid to hurt people with my words. i wish i knew literally anything that would improve my way of talking.

Okay some tips that worked for me is to always be in the moment and listen to what people in groups talk about. Then discuss is with one of them later. That person would be surely interested. You don't always have to talk about yourself, just try to get to know others and ask questions. Always go for open ended questions that doesn't end with just a yes or no cause they won't explain much and the silence can get awkward. The point is to talk about the other person, people like to talk about themselves.

I think the thing is at least with me is that you need to talk to someone who you have a lot of things in common with, a conversation will flow then, also you shouldn't be the one who is constantly trying to think of things to say they need to come back at you with some thing ,that's you know a good reply, something u can bounce off

What if my mind is usually blank outside of social situations too? Most of my thinking is done nonverbally. For example if I was wondering where the car is I just know that I am thinking that, I have no need to mentally verbalize that.

i saw this trend on twitter and actually some people do not think verbally in their minds, so they dont have a voice inside their head. most people on the other hand have a voice and speak to themselves in their minds ALL THE TIME. and a small ratio of people like you and me, have problems with coming up with something to say, because we are silent in our heads. maybe we are supposed to be silent. maybe we always need friends and a husband/wife that will never stop speaking... maybe we are meant to listen. so maybe there is nothing wrong with us.

I am also like this! It's refreshing to see others that deal with it too. I always think ideas and comments about anything in my head and not out loud or verbally. Wow I'm so glad to finally meet someone who has to go through this.

I can have a good conversation with someone but then I’ll go on a rant but for people I’m not comfortable with that’s when I have these awkward long pauses and can’t find my words. And it seems like when I’ve gotten older someone will constantly correct me or say I’m saying something wrong and now I’m starting to second-guess myself so I don’t talk too much around them, and I will constantly forget the words that I’m looking for.

You know, It's extremely difficult to have a conversation about topics of interest because everthing that is spoken tends to be trivial and banal stuff, and it's repeated over and over in any other conversation you may have later on. However, nobody talks about history, philosophy, physics, etc and when I feel confident to mention any, they just go blank (unconfortability I guess) and my friends just change the topic to the same we talk every day all the time. I force myself to socialize because I love being all alone and that's a rabbit hole, it's socially dangerous for myself

What if you don't have any desire to be social? I can't stand all the arbitrary social rules and cliques of people and popular culture and its just too exhausting to go out and pretend that I care about those things. At the same time I don't want to be completely alone and you pretty have to be social in order to even survive in this world. What then?!

No idea. I guess I'll just have to pretend to like crap I don't in order to get friends and then hopefully be more real as we get closer.
@angelesdoradoandres5751

Don't pretend to be into stuff you're not really into. Don't be fake. At first it will get you friends, sure. But in the long run it's simply not worth it. You will be exhausted of constantly pretending to be someone you're not and you won't ever be able to express your true feelings to your so called 'friends'. If you dont wanna feel lonely I would encourage you to do some sort of altruistic activity or some volunteering, on whatever area you think you could be helpful (to kids, people in general, even animals...) When you give you will always get things in return and at the end of the day you'll feel really good with yourself knowing that you've done something good for someone. That's my little piece of advice for ya. Hope it helped somewhat. Peace :)

Dude same. I always had trouble making friends growing up because I thought social rules and the hierarchy shit between people is dumb (I still do btw) but one day I finally got tired of being alone and constantly outcasted by people, so I dumbed myself down. I started to play by the rules and I started to focus on trivial things like celebrities and gossip and shit like that just so I could finally be accepted by people, and guess what? It was probably one of the first times in my life I made friends. They were actually pretty funny to be around and I miss them but they weren’t the best of friends. Now I barely have any friends and haven’t had much of a life cause I left high school due to my social anxiety. I spend most of my time in isolation because of anxiety. Because of this I lost the “act” I used to have and so now I’m back to how I was before when I could never make friends. I’ve been trying to make new friends online, but I barely know what to say and it frustrates me a lot. I guess I need to go back to pretending like I care about pop culture and drama. And the funny thing is I do like pop culture and trivial things like music and movies but I like entertainment from the past and most people my age like current stuff so yeah
@vl2663
@vl2663 4 жыл бұрын
Angeles Dorado Andres you’re right, I think me pretending I was someone else in high school made my initial social anxiety worse and was probably what caused me to leave. But I didn’t have any other choice, I didn’t want to be a loner with no friends anymore. Majority of people in high school are fake anyway

I used to be really good in conversations and was a lot more open and extraverted than most people. But now because of covid, my friend group and many other factors I stopped talking so much and started focusing on many problems and got really anxious to the point I had to get a therapist. Now I just sit with people while they talk and I barely say anything. Someone called me quiet and that was unusual for me. I hate that I can't say anything and when someone says something I'm like how did I not think of that. It sucks

My problem is that when I'm in a conversation with someone...I tend to speak fast and speak many things, I don't allow the other person talk...they even say to me that I'm boring and when I talk it seems like my mind is out there and it's just my mouth that makes sounds, that I don't focus nor watch the people I talk...I think it is due to my fear of not being interesting enough for the people I talk to...it's my fear of the awkward silence and the judgement of not participating in a conversation

I find alcohol really helps to combat this. It makes sense since alcohol helps to dissolve anxiety. I wish I could feel all the time exactly the way I do when I've had a few drinks. Drinking isn't great for your health so it's a real pity. It also makes you feel like garbage the following day.

I've always been concious during conversations be it professional or with close ones. My mind always get blank which is usually misunderstood as explained. For a while I believed this might be just natural. However, we are born as social beings and staying like this would end up being stressed. Still in progress for being relaxed and having decent conversations.

My problem is most people dont have anything to say that i would be intrested in so i do not have any response to whatever shit people usually talk about. I may have been in a stage where i was thinking not to embarass myself, but im past that, so now i see the real problem is the lack of conversation subjects. Then this causes a real pain when interacting with new people, because I can not have any idea what to talk about if Im not intrested in small talk AND I yet dont know wheter the other person is intrested in what I like, and if this person is even able to talk about things Im intrested in. And believe me its hard to even start talking about psychology, astrology, economy, science or politics rules (not current politics, but rather the science behind politics, which is amazing, but people just dont understand those subjects). I guess it all depends on the place you are in. I mean i live in a village, my friends are mostly simple guys, fun to be around but not much deep conversation material. My school years I really was social anxious, that changed when I starded my company and just HAD TO go out there and speak with people, but in school I literally did not get to know anyone for longer than school perioid. My company made me better at being a normal person and gave me ability to interact with people at all, but closed a door to meet new people at work on a friendship lvl, because "I am a boss", and mainly I hire older people. To sum up Im a former ultra shy, anxious guy living in a village where there is not much people to meet, I dont have common subjects to speak about, and I dont have places or opportunities to meet people. Now when COVID appeared i just ththought to myself my hopes and dreams are even less possible now. In conclusion the most important thing in meeting people is the environment and opportunities on regular basis, aaaaaand being an average Joe.

I think my inner dialogue is mixed all over the place, which makes it harder for me to word my thoughts, since they are mostly images. So when someone talks to me, I have to describe everything I saw in my mind to show how my words sound more descriptive to sound like I care. It’s hard sometimes, because I feel like I need to jump start my brain 30min in advance before talking to make sure I have enough ideas in my mind to talk about.
