This is a fleeting moment in time when The Who solidified their place in rock-n-roll history as the greatest live band-ever. One year post-Tommy, about to release Who’s Next, they were rightfully arrogant...and at their peak. The amount of sheer power emanating from this band could not be reproduced by any rival, including Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones. The Who’s 1970 Isle of Wight performance is a tour-de-force of musical prowess and showmanship. Nothing like it will ever be seen again.

@sevenlayer87805 жыл бұрын
Please. We all love Moon for his historical significance, the way he liberated the drums and made them a viable soloistic concern. But...best rock drummer of all time? No one has come close since?? That's just not true. The reality is that Moon's performances were so often hindered by drugs/alcohol, poor musical choices and a rather limited rhythmic vocabulary. Let's not forget that he struggled with such simple tasks as playing in triple meter and working the hi-hat pedal. Not exactly the hallmarks of the greatest rock drummer ever. Again, a marvelous performer with a solid decade of great, ground-breaking drumming to his credit ('63-'71, thereabouts). Let's leave it at that.
@JAMEYSIMMS5 жыл бұрын
I didn't say greatest waltz drummer, I said rock. He played the hi hat fine. Style, in spades, and inimitable, and as powerful as it gets. It's subjective, and you can have your pristine, perfect, slick masters.

I know these comparisons are stupid but I am huge fan of the Who and Zep but at this stage - 1970 - no one could touch this band for live performances. Original songs, raw and powerful, no posing, no mystical lyrics, no proto prog noodling, the better bassist, a real hard soulful macho singer, a stripped down boiler suited guitarist who would run a mile from a pretty lick and a demon drummer who had his own truly unique style and who played off all the others, sometimes verging towards the chaotic but overall underpinning all those fantastic jams perfectly. Look for it here - blues, punk, hard rock, art rock - long live rock. sadly Keith waned after 75 and that was it.

The "album that we're about halfway through" never came about. This song was also destined for an EP at Christmas 1970, but it didn't happen. Then it was supposed to be on Lifehouse, but that got abandoned in favor of a single album, Who's Next. However, the lead single for the album is a 3:35 severe edit of Won't Get Fooled Again, with I Don't Know Myself on the flip side (and clocking in at 5:00, you gotta wonder why shave WGFA to 3:35?!). I have loved this song since Isle of Wight came out in late 1996, and I had a bootleg VHS from Japan of the Murray Lerner film, and was blown away by the song, but also seeing Moon just destroy it while doing gymnastics, and also with the precise timing to hit the woodblock. Talk about dynamics! The Who's deep cuts would be other band's best songs.
