Hi Michelle, while watching the video I saw at 14:12 there's Basti house written on one of the photographs. Were your grandparents originally from Basti, Uttar Pradesh, India??? That's where I belong to as well! Let me know soon! And i loved how you are so eager to learn about your ancestry. Much love from India 😘😘😘

Its a natural question to ask what could have been, but it can hurt us to linger there. A better question is what can still be. think it’s important to remember that your identity is not where you come from, but who you are in character, skills, interests, and what you choose to embrace. My niece is struggling with this right now. My nephews and niece are adopted, mixed race kiddos. Their parents are fully Caucasian and bilingual in the kiddos dna language. But the traditions of their bio parents are coping habits of drugs and alcohol, and unstable romantic relationships. The kids would have missed out on many cultural traditions because we already know at age 2, McDonald’s was an everyday meal, and childcare was provided by headstart. The emotional culture their adoptive parents gave them of being loved, learning to cope in healthy ways, not being around substances and revolving door paying men and prison, and uncertainty of continually being around different fathers, as they are in and out of prison for dealing and violence. Sometimes life is about making the best of what you have, and being thankful for what you have. If you want to know a culture you feel you missed out on, make some friends, do a cultural experience, read about it. You can add traditions. Nobody loves all the traditions their parents have. We all have to find our way to some extent. If you’re still a minor, maybe your parents can help find second culture people to connect you with, a language teacher, a traditional outfit, a cooking class. If you don’t ask, they won’t know what you need/want. Go get it!

My Oma(German for grandma) died in 2012 and even before that she had Alzheimer and sometimes it seemed like she was gone a long time before she died. I still have my paternal grandmother but she was never nearly as close to me as my maternal one who was such a kind hearted person and loved everyone. My paternal grandmother isn't the nicest person and I really miss my Oma a lot. I don't have or want children but I named my cat Emma after her. We rescued Emma when she was a small feral kitten that was about to be killed by some assholes. As soon as I saw her I knew that Emma would be the perfect name for her because they have the same eye color.

@@bullseye6969 it's not her fault that she struggles to pronounce certain words. my mother is from Taiwan, and of course, mum had grown up speaking Chinese. I never learnt Chinese properly until we actually moved to Taiwan, when I was seven. It took me seven years to actually learn the language, and only because I had to, not exactly out of choice. Now I realise how great of an opportunity it was, and I'm ever so grateful now. kids just find it hard to adapt, especially if the child is biracial. I understand that she isn't a child, but there must be a reason for her not speaking Hindi. She is biracial and said herself that she struggled with her identitity and never embraced the Indian blood in her until now. If both of her parents were Indian and she never learnt - then that's different. But you have to understand that growing up in America and not India must be a contributing factor to that.

12:29 Why did I just start crying? You said you felt as though you were taking ownership in that moment, and that’s so frighteningly important. My family came from Sicily to Mississippi in the year 1900. They started out strong, proud, fairly affluent. Then they were systematically beat down and told if they were to be here they must forget where they came from, their Catholic faith, and even their familiar food. It all came to a head when a KKK member raped my great-great Aunt, then came into my family’s store bragging about it to her husband. My uncle pulled out a shotgun and blew him away. What happened after that was fuzzy in my great grandmother’s memory, but the whole family had to escape that night and leave the state. The money was gone, home was gone, and more importantly, their pride was gone. As every good cook knows, color means flavor, and if we forget our heritage, how bland this melting pot will be! Sorry for the soapbox moment 😳. 💚

MS is one of those states, in this beautiful country, that has been so abused and kept captive on the wrong side of history, even to this day. Baby steps have been made, but we’ve a long way to go. My paternal great grandparents were both Italian immigrants who came to the US in the early 1900s. Breaks my heart to think that they would even be considered “unworthy” of living here.

You got some of the facial features from your grandmother. The prayer your grandmother sung is popular in north India, so you are likely to have your paternal roots in north India. Basti House looks like a 'Lucknow's Luxury mansion' (Haveli in hindi). I appreciate your grandmother's way of thinking as she accepted everything in her life, because that needs a great deal of courage. She is an angel.

I am an atheist and been that way ever since I can remember. I say this only so that to emphasise there is no motive behind my question, but curiosity. I am beginning to see a pattern here, and i am genuinely wondering why. If there is an inter-religious marriage between a Hindu and Muslim or Christian, the child usually doesn't follow Hinduism but the other religion (Islam Christianity etc) Why is that? Is Hinduism a horrible religion? Is it easy to be Christian in America? ARe Christians more stronger in their faith than Hindus? What is it? I know you can't speak for everyone, but I am seeing a pattern here.
