Break-in; It's the heat from friction that is the problem when the parts are not properly mated yet, particularly the piston rings. Under hard acceleration cylinder pressures are high so the piston rings are really pushed into the cylinder walls and large amounts of heat is generated which can/will lead to galling...

I dropped my brand new Triumph Speed Triple R 2016. It's the first decent bike I've ever had and I was devastated! Luckily it landed mostly on grass and sustained practically no damage, but the feeling of guilt and embarrassment was overwhelming. LCR you're a CHAMPION for speaking so open and honestly about this; it's precisely why we love and support you! You'll get this all fixed and you can forget all about it.

The way you’re talking about running it in is pretty much how I did my 2017 Kawasaki Z900. Took it easy for the first hundred or so miles, after that I used it as I normally would without revving more the 2/3 of the way through the range and no pinning the throttle. Once I’d done the first service at a little over 600 miles, I just rode it however I wanted. Now at nearly 11,000 miles and purring like a kitten 👍

C. Henderson great bikes I think, obviously they’re very basic, with the only rider aid being ABS, but loads of fun. Only downside I’ve found is the suspension is a bit on the cheap side and needs some work and the breadbox on the exhaust kills the exhaust note (thanks Euro 4 😡). Nothing that can’t be fixed though, should be putting a cartridge kit and aftermarket shock on the bike in the next couple of months which will sort the ride out, then I can turn my attention to the headers and free up some decibels 😈

Ari done a pretty scientific vid about running in brand new bikes you should watch it. Even knowing that when I had a brand new bike I did it by the book. Total sympathy for that sick feeling. Been there. I wasn't right with the entire bike when I dropped my 650 brand new. I didn't even get on it for 4 days after. I wasn't really right until a new fairing had been put on the left side and it was back to brand new again.

After about 100 miles, I would change the oil, then follow the breakin schedule with spirited bursts up to the specified rpm (nothing full throttle). The reason for the very early oil change is that I believe that if there were any burrs left over from the machining of the engine parts, they would most likely be taken off in the first hundred or so miles and I just want to get the oil out. Some will say that the oil filter will catch it all, others will say that the motor has a run in period in the factory before it is shipped, but for my own piece of mind....it’s only 4-5 quarts of oil.

Follow Kawasaki's running in instructions. They've built the engine and know how it needs running in based on how they built it and the tolerances involved so it makes more sense IMO to listen to them than the "experts"

I feel your pain mate. I bought a brand new 2019 CB1000R and just as I rode it off the show room floor, turned right onto a busy road and bike slipped out from underneath me!!! The bike literally had 100 feet on the clock before coming off. I was taking it very easy but the tyres were still oily and assume there was also show room tyre shine on it. Now I have a scratched exhaust and a skinned clutch cover. Going to leave it and will repair it before eventually selling it. But very gutted!!!

Sorry about the drop man :( As for the break-in I believe in the "middle of the road" method, not pampering it but also not absolutely caning it, just ride it and rev it as you would normally while being mindful not to go too crazy and most importantly not to lug it or do full load pulls from low revs.

New tank looks better IMO, Life is to short for 1000mile running in. 200miles and loads of heat cycles on the engine rings done ✅ 600 mile oil change full power...

@FireTwo
@FireTwo 5 жыл бұрын
MarJay1980 nope all been fully tested in the factory. They are span up way way past operating speeds to fully balance the blades. After visiting the Ducati factory I won’t ever wait till 621miles (1000km) to keep under a certain rpm limit they are all maxed out in the red and held for some time in house before being fitted to the bike.
@MarJay1980
@MarJay1980 5 жыл бұрын
@@FireTwo Ok then, can you explain why Kawasaki specify a 1000 mile break in? On an engine which can make 300bhp per litre? Is it not self evident?
@FireTwo
@FireTwo 5 жыл бұрын
MarJay1980 you run them in your way I’ll do mine tbh you think you that keeping it under 4K for 600miles help in any way?
@MarJay1980
@MarJay1980 5 жыл бұрын
FireTwo yep, else Kawasaki wouldn’t recommend it. Most bikes you keep below a set revs for 600 miles. This is 4000 revs for 600 miles and 6000 revs for another 400... I expect there is a special reason for that else it would have the standard run in period. Nobody I’ve seen has shown any solid evidence that hard break in is good for the longevity of the motor, nor that the bike makes any more than 1 or 2 bhp more than a normal break in which is well within the tolerance of the engine. The manufacturer who knows the most about the bike recommends a break in procedure, so what makes you think they would lie?

Dropped my first new bike first night I bought it. Left it outside mate's house, where I'd gone to show it off, came out a few hours later and it was lying on its side. I'd parked it too close to upright on sidestand parallel to kerb on cambered road and the wind must have toppled it over, what a plum. Quite a few annoying scuffs, exhaust, bar end, side panel etc - was so gutted and embarrassed.

Oh dear, the hard vs soft break in lol, the thing most people don't realise is that their bike or car should have break-in oil put in it at factory or at the dealer when prepping the bike for sale. It's thinner than the usual oil that bike or car takes, so you must take it easy, the oil is used for that reason too, to be easier on piston rings, shell bearings and such while they bed in. Or change it and do a hard run-in if you like, I can't see it having any benefit either way as it's not changing the compression ratio of the pistons is it lol. But hard break-in will put more pressure on components, so you could snap piston rings, not worth the risk unless you have all the money in the world. Gutted about the bike mate, I'd still be crying, could have been worse I guess.

I took my 600 yamaha to have new chain and sprockets fitted and they dropped it off the lift. They didn't tell me and I didn't notice the damage till I got home. When I went back they denied any knowledge of it. Tank was damaged and the colour of the paint matched the red colour of their lift. I now have a Tracer 2015 and very happy. Just saying this because I know the feeling and learned a valuable lesson to check EVERY inch of any vehicle I take to any garage. I even video the vehicle before I leave on gopro and needless to say I never took anything to them again. They are local and I have since been informed that a guy who often pops round there for a chat and coffee caused the damage. Sorry for the long post and I feel gutted for you. Still a great bike and as a side note you may as well remove the warning stickers with a hammer and chisel.

Bad luck old chap, we've all done it, well I have at least. That bike is beautiful, the dark emerald green that comes through in certain angles and light. Your lucky to have one think of it that way. Run it in the way Kawasaki tell you to, the tolerances must be much finer on that machine if that is their recommended run in schedule, follow it to the letter. The engineers at Kawasaki know better than any knob telling you otherwise on KZbin. Have fun.

What a bummer! Glad you got it sorted. I agree with on following recommended break in on such a complex and expensive bike!

I did about 70% soft break in and 30% hard break in on my previous bikes (2013 R6 & 2015 Z1000SX) during their break in period. All perfect with no problem at all after that. Both were smooth and responsive without any issue for thousands of miles. I recommend everyone to stick with the manufacturer instructions for most of time and just a little bit of hard (not that hard onii-chan!) break in once in a while if you want to. But if you want to thrashing it around right from the start of your first ride is also fine. Both have pro's and con's. Watching these vids makes me want to ride again though currently it's inconvenient for me. Sold them bikes both near the end of last year since i got less and less time to ride because of job commitment and the birth of my 3rd daughter. God i miss riding so much... ~Sigh

I bought a new Hayabusa nearly three years ago and after bringing it home in the van I parked it on its side stand and decided to take some pictures of it as it was all sparkly in the sunshine only to watch it roll off the stand onto its left hand side, two weeks later a young dear ran into my right hand side and smashed all the fairing! You would be right in guessing I got rid of it very shortly after getting it fixed!

Machine polish the sides, make it gloss and remove the hairline scratch at the same time. Use Roar Advanced Finishing 610 compound on an orange CFH pad with a rotary machine.

I dropped my mt09sp with 500km on the clock as well. thankfully the petrol tank was not damaged. but I had to replace the clutch lever + left front indicator + engine cover. I just couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it on the ground.

If it was my bike I would run it in by the book. The Workshop channel has already done a series of videos on this 🙀

Agreed 100%... after all, what would the manufacturer know about the engineering behind their product, right?

"by the book" also means that you're an obstacle in traffic, no fun at all. The most important thing is, that the engine is warm. Then you can go 3/4 throttle and 3/4 RPM without damaging anything. Running in by the book is overrated and overly cautious. I can say that, because I work on motorcycle engines almost every day on a professional basis. Some bikes with short gearing are reaching less than 60mph in the tallest gear, if you're reving the engine by the book. I'd never ride around like that, that's for sure.

The new tank looks absolutely bang on. Better than the original in my opinion. Love the way the pinstripes go all the way along the bike. Blessing in disguise maybe?

The "soft run in" is a myth, just don't lug the engine and keep it under the suggested rpm.

never forget the day my brother bought his brand new suzuki gs550e 1981 13 miles back from the dealer and he let dad take it down the drive , he dropped it turning on gravel at the bottom, can still see the look on brothers face, scuffed engine case the result !!!.

I prefer the replacement tank over the original, it looks a lot better, especially with the matching pinstripe, and the matt-gloss contrast, you touched lucky there, although it did cost you £600! I wouldn't bother getting the other tank repaired, just put a £2,000 sticker on it, and hang it on the wall!

I crashed my 2017 gsxr1000r at a Suzuki track day at phillip island and I was so devo. High sided at the bottom of Luke’s heights but was very lucky to only have a bit of fairing damage and a massive dent in the tank. Slowly replacing the parts one by one haha. Will get the tank last cause I’m sure that will be most expensive haha
