Not to keep going on about it, but if you'd had a separate theme for each movie, you could have had yourself and your father tied up in chairs as the theme of the third movie, and then you could have explained it together! :o Unless he was busy, but I'm just gonna ignore that possibility. :3

"If these movies go any further back in time..." Funny you should mention, the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles literally did this for their home release. Apparently when it aired there was a whole wider narrative that had an old man version Indiana meeting people and reminiscing, with some stories about him as a teenager and some with him as a younger kid, but the home release didn't have any of that- it was just his adventures in the past- and they were put in a different order, with all of the stories around the same time periods grouped together, but I guess there were way less teenage Indi stories than kid stories, so they put the older Indi stories first. So if you didn't watch it in the original format, the first several episodes were The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and then the rest suddenly inexplicably became The Even Younger Indiana Jones Chronicles

In the category of I WAS TODAY YEARS OLD WHEN I FOUND OUT, I need to tell *someone* some Indiana Jones information, and while I doubt anyone is reading the 925th comment on a (solidly rewatchable!) six month old video, I don't know who else to tell about this or how. This is wild, and somebody somewhere on this internet needs to unpack it, yo. SO: I am basically The Eldest Millenial, and I grew up watching a tv show from the early nineties called The Young Indiana Jones, which - for more reasons all the time - I am not super surprised people younger than me haven't really heard about. It sounds like a cheaply made cartoon franchise, like they do now with Trolls and Puss in Boots and How to Train Your Dragon and such, but it was an hourlong live action primetime adventure series that Wikipedia informs me ran for two seasons with 4 tv movies, and which mostly told stories about a teenage to college-age Indiana Jones. Have you heard of the movie "Powder"? Google the movie "Powder." The Young Indiana Jones starred the guy who was also the lead in "Powder" - haha. Notably there were also some episodes of the show where we see Indiana Jones at 10-12 years old. My two main memories of the show are an episode where Indy meets Ernest Hemingway and joins the French Foreign Legion and an episode where a Russian girl with a cake teaches Indy about communism. Now just a few days ago my sisters were explicitly searching Disney+ for Indiana Jones movies - as in, they were literally like "show me all your Indiana Jones" - and one of them specifically remarked that it was too bad/kind of weird that not even Total Disney has The Young Indiana Jones. But have you ever discovered that a streaming service has basically buried something? It hasn't actually eliminated or destroyed the show (not, say, the way Disney threw away The Mysterious Benedict Society, which I loved, and which is now GONE), but it won't appear unless you search for the exact title. Well, I happened to Google The Young Indiana Jones show this morning, and Google volunteered that it IS streaming on Disney+, so I tried again with an exact title search this time and found it. Skipping over some boring details, I ended up looking for an episode guide to find out if Disney had all of it or just some of the episodes, and I WAS TODAY YEARS OLD WHEN I FOUND OUT that in the late 90s, George Lucas decided to go back and HAVE THE SHOW COMPLETELY RE-CUT so that instead of a non-chronological series with two seasons and four tv movies, it's now about twenty "feature-length" episodes where the events of the story take place in exact chronological order. A typical one of these new "features" smashes together content from two episodes, and some aspects of the series have been cut out altogether, such as an Old Indy who acted as a framing device and told the stories. This is a fairly WILD thing for anyone to want to do, because 1) the adventure stories were told in no particular order, so when you just line up all the events chronologically, there is no particular reason to expect that content from different episodes will mesh thematically, just because two episodes both happen to be set around the same time, and 2) the whole point of some of these original episodes was that Indy encountered a quest as a 10-12 year old that he wouldn't see through until he was 19-20. Basically, the 10-12 year old Indy was sometimes more or less a flashback. Imagine re-cutting LOST so there are several entire episodes made from nothing but pre-Island flashbacks which you have to get through before the plane ever crashes, or entire seasons of PSYCH that are nothing but Corbin Bernsen teaching young Shawn life hacks? This isn't quite as crazy, because the Youngest Indiana Jones content runs longer than a few minutes at a time, and there's a lot less Youngest Indiana Jones, total, relative to Young Indiana Jones, but so far I've watched the first "feature" and 1/3 of the way through, Indy and Laurence of Arabia solve a murder mystery, only for the murderer to be like, "But you'll NEVER find the missing artifact MUAHAHA!" And Laurence of Arabia just turns around to everybody and is like, "I guess we'll never find the missing artifact," so they all just F off to Morocco to do something completely different. Because above all, we must tell the story in order, and Indy won't be old enough to go, like, "Hey whatever happened to that artifact?" for another ten years or so. [Side note: My sister has a remarkable memory. I was telling her about all this, and she was like, 'By any chance, was the murdered man named Rashid?' Apparently, she has a core memory of child Indiana Jones screaming, 'STOP IT STOP IT YOU'RE GOING TO KILL ME LIKE YOU KILLED RASHID!' after a mummy fell on top of him]. Meanwhile, troubling but not unexpected for an early 90s show, the politics/values/messaging will MAKE YOUR HEAD SPIN. They're clearly trying to do... something? Indy, for example, meets an enslaved boy and struggles to understand how vastly different Omar's frame of reference is from his own, not to mention the inherent power imbalance in their friendship. But some of the content to come out of this story is blithering insane. A conversation between well-educated adults who are positioned as reasonable and basically likable ends with "Of course the real problem with legal slavery is that, slaves being property, they can be stolen from you!" A guy teaches Indy to do brown face, and their conversation ends with "Don't worry, it comes off," like that's the main thing. It's more or less a happy ending (bit wistful, maybe, but not an injustice) when Omar is rescued from bad slavers and immediately returned to regularly scheduled slavery, and Indy is issued his White Savior card just for the good deed of opening Omar's eyes to what it would be like to have freedom, choices, travel, adventure, and a loving family, even though they both more or less agree he never will. Omar is clearly so sad that he doesn't have parents and may never get to see the sea, but the important point of the episode is, like, "Thank you Indy for teaching me what's been stolen from me forever!" Of course, I do vibe that this inadequate ending is only setting up a future meeting between Omar and Indy as young adults, but we have to stop telling Omar's story and F off to eastern Africa, because it's still 1901 dammit and one thing we know about stories is that they happen in order. Apologies for my long-winded comment, especially if this actually is common knowledge, but I tell you my mind was heckin blown.

48 min yeah, Temple of Doom felt more like a "Monster of the week" 2 parter, like a side story. There felt like real stakes in Raiders. Like, in Raiders he's actively working to thwart the nazis, it's a race and losing the race might cost the world. In Temple of Doom, the bad guys had already won, they enslaved the locals to mine and were well ensconced in their power, Yeah Indy saves a bunch of kids, but not because he went there to DO that, he just WAS there and didn't feel ok about leaving them as slaves. So the fact that the film goes all over the world and is just spectacle after spectacle it all kinda blurs together in a way and doesn't "feel" like there's any real tension or stakes.
